My interest in the instrument really began on February 9th, 1964, when The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan show for the first time. The guitar (and the music) is created to make us happy, sad, contemplative, ecstatic…frankly, one is never indifferent in the face of music. According to my favourite guitar manufacturer, the legendary Robert Godin, you can never be sad with a guitar in your hands. Absolutely, the guitar is an “instrument of happiness”, hence the name for this new ensemble “Instruments of Happiness”. For almost the past 30 years I have been exploring a new approach to the electric guitar a vision as both a composer and a guitarist. It is a vision which does not ignore my roots in jazz, blues, rock and noise, but a vision which seeks to extend the boundaries of the electric guitar, incorporating chamber music, electroacoustics, orchestral music, opera, etc. “Instruments of Happiness” is, to a great extent, the next step in this evolution. Instruments of Happiness is clearly obsessed with the electric guitar. We only have electric guitar on stage, and we hope guitarists will find some sympathetic resonance with our concerts. However, we also hope to move beyond the guitar, creating new projects and concerts that are unique, imaginative and passionate musical events, all prepared with the greatest care for the quality of sound and the performance of the music. We hope to be not just guitarists, but musicians. We hope to bring you some happiness with our instruments. Instruments of Happiness come in three sizes: the chamber quartet, the 20-piece professional orchestra, and our unique 100-guitar ensemble which combines professional and community players in presenting exceptional, site-specific new music for large ensemble. Since its creation in 2014, the group has released its first CD (2016 – on the US Starkland Records), performed sold-out shows of it 100, 20 and 4 guitar ensembles in Montréal, played at the Sound Symposium Festival (St. John’s), the Festival Montréal Baroque, and presented its 100-guitar piece “100 Very Good Reasons Why…” at the Modulus Festival in Vancouver. Its next 100- guitar event will be presented on April 9, 2017, at the Complexe Desjardins in Montréal. The event will premiere the newly commissioned piece “Hymne sauvage”, by Montréal composer Alexandre David, a work celebrating the 75th anniversary of the birth of legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix. “100 Very Good Reasons Why…” will also be presented in the summer of 2017 at the Stratford Summer Music Festival. Following the spectacular success of Instruments of Happiness’ massive 150-guitar project at the recent Festival MNM (over 3,000 in the audience!), the group presents a more intimate vision of the electric guitar – the quartet. The group features Brady, Jonathan Barriault, Simon Duchesne and Francis Brunet-Turcotte. The group’s second CD - entitled The Happiness Handbook, features 6 new Canadian compositions by Tim Brady, Scott Godin, Emily Hall, Gordon Fitzell, Maxim McKinley and Jordon Nobles. Recorded in April 2017 at the legendary Montréal studio Hotel 2 Tango, the CD continues the group’s groundbreaking work, redefining chamber music for the electric guitar. This is the group’s second release on the US label, Starkland Records. American Tour: To support the CD, the group will be playing 3 concerts in the US in March/April - in New York (Spectrum – March 28), Pittsburgh (Warhol Museum – March 30) and Chicago (University of Illinois – April 5). The tour will finish in Montréal, with a concert at the Sala Rossa on April 2 at 8 pm.     Press Release: 15 YEARS OF ELAN On Monday, August 26, ELAN (English Language Arts Network) will be celebrating 15 years of serving the English-speaking arts community of Québec! ELAN was created in 2004, when 150 English-speaking artists from multiple artistic disciplines gathered to examine the state of the arts in Québec. After decades of decline and departures, the post-1995 referendum arts scene was experiencing a remarkable renaissance. Young artists were choosing to stay in Québec, and other artists were returning after living away. Artists, particularly musicians, from across Canada were flocking to Montréal because of cheap rents and a vibrant art scene, in what was described as the “Arcade Fire Effect”. ELAN’s first challenge was to make contact with thousands of artists working in multiple disciplines who were living in different parts of Montréal across different regions of Québec. Monthly schmoozers in popular bars proved a simple and effective way to connect artists. The RAEV (Recognizing Artists: Enfin Visibles!) project provided public visibility by creating profiles and videos about life in Québec for minority English-speaking artists. Guernica Essays published Minority Report, a collection of essays on the history of English-language artists in Québec. ELAN’s Made au Québec website aggregated an impressive volume of media coverage from around the world, demonstrating the impact of Québec’s English-speaking artists. ELAN has worked closely with communities around Québec in many ways. Arts Alive! Québec festivals (2014-2018) produced dozens of performances, presentations and hand-on-workshops, employing hundreds of artists in Hudson, Knowlton, Wakefield, Huntingdon, Québec City, and Montréal’s West Island.

    CONSTELLATION La critica musicale ha spesso identificato alcuni generi musicali con le città nelle quali si erano sviluppati, arrivando a far coincidere musica e toponomastica come nel caso del Canterbury sound o del Madchester. In realtà di solito si è trattato di un tentativo di semplificare la realtà per rendere intelligibili fenomeni la cui complessità sarebbe stata di difficile comprensione alla maggioranza dei lettori delle varie riviste del settore; basti pensare alla San Francisco psichedelica, al country di Nashville, all'elettronica berlinese, alla Seattle grunge o a Londra per il punk, ecc. Detto ciò, in pochi avrebbero immaginato che nel novero di queste “capitali” musicali sarebbe apparso il nome di Montreal, principale città del Quebec canadese. Eppure se dovessimo cercare una città con la quale identificare il post- rock degli anni Duemila non potremmo che guardare verso questa metropoli di più di un milione e mezzo di abitanti, se non altro per l’etichetta discografica indipendente Constellation records che vi ha sede. Nata nel 1997, la Constellation si è fin da subito caratterizzata per le “ostiche” scelte musicali e di marketing, dimostrando negli anni un'ammirevole coerenza che le ha permesso di intercettare le espressioni più avanzate e innovative del movimento post-rock canadese – ovvero il meglio del post-rock tout-court –, distinguendosi commercialmente dalle tante etichette indipendenti grazie a confezioni in digipack dominate da colori tenui e da un’originalità grafica e iconografica che diventa determinante nel trasmettere anche visivamente i contenuti musicali. Ma forse per comprendere il percorso qui proposto occorre partire dall’inizio, ovvero dalla definizione di Post-rock.

    2018 Nief-Norf Research Summit NEW ASIA Abstracts Panel #1 Crafting Musical Identities in the West Kiu Tung Poon (The Chinese University of Hong Kong): Performing Intercultural Music of the Chinese Diaspora The idea of returning to the composer’s cultural roots as sources of musical inspiration, as clichéd as it may sound, has been embraced as an effective metaphor for musical creativity in much of the twentieth century and beyond by Chinese musicians at home and abroad. This presentation will look at two piano works by Chinese composers Chen Yi (b.1953) and Liang Lei (b.1972) to examine the sonic attributes that have been framed as “Chinese” and “Western,” as well as the language and strategies of musical syncretism that have been featured so prominently in these compositions. In her much performed Ba Ban, Chen juxtaposed what was essentially a pentatonic melodic template, or “mother tune,” for hundreds of traditional Chinese melodies with chromaticism and serialism. Liang, in his The Moon is Following Us, reinterpreted a Qinghai folksong in aid of audio signal processing and set the pitch materials in an avant-garde fashion. This presentation will shed light on the interpretative choices of the composers and the purported integration of distinctive musical languages with explicit reference to folk, authentic compositional elements. I will also attempt to suggest performing approaches in the discourse of musical syncretism. Young Steinway Artist Kiu Tung Poon appeared as recitalist and collaborative pianist on concert stages in the US, France, Germany, Portugal, Vienna, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China.
