SEASONS FOR GROWTH: GRIEF AND LOSS PROGRAM FOR SCHOOL AGED STUDENTS Loss and grief are issues which affect all of us at some stage in our lives. Learning to deal effectively with these issues is central to personal well-being and happiness. Unresolved grief can also affect a student’s learning. St Joseph’s is offering an Australian education program called SEASONS FOR GROWTH which supports participants who have experienced change in their family because of a death, separation or divorce. The program explores issues such as change, loss, managing feelings, coping strategies and support networks. Children who took part in the program last year are encouraged to take a year off this year and revisit the program the following year if the need arises. SEASONS is an eight session program which concludes with an additional ‘Celebration’ session. Later in the year each group will have the opportunity to meet on two further occasions to discuss issues arising from the program. The program uses the theme of the four seasons to introduce and identify the aspects of each new topic. Seasons is based on the belief that grief is normal and can be a valuable part of life, and that children, adolescents and adults need to be provided with the opportunity to examine how grief, as a result of death, separation or divorce has impacted on their lives. The SEASONS program will be offered during Term 3 and will be facilitated by John Grbin and Paula Clark. Both Paula and John have received training in order to run the program. If you think your son or daughter would benefit from SEASONS, please talk with one of these people for further information regarding the program. Should your child decide to participate, please fill in the tear-off section in this newsletter and return to school by Monday 24 June. An information session for parents whose children are interested in participating will be held prior to the commencement of the program. The date for this will be decided once we know numbers. You may contact John Grbin or Paula Clark on 88423830 before 24 June to indicate your interest. St Joseph’s School is pleased to be able to offer this important program, and we are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved. It is important that the child be a willing and interested participant to benefit from the program.
