A Leer From Fr. Jerome Kish I am the Greatest!

There was a great fighter named Cassius Clay. He became a Muslim and changed his name to Muhammed Ali. He loved to tell everyone how great he was. “I am the greatest!” he would say, “I float like a butterfly, sting like a bee, the world’s greatest boxer is Muhammed Ali.” Of course, some of his bragging can be chalked up to the foolishness of youth and bright light of talent. But it was about five years ago that Ali died, old and weak; even I could have beat him. Sinful pride infects us all, so we should pray for him, not look down on him. Ali was great, but not the greatest. That title belongs to Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the greatest fighter.

What are the battles of Christ? He fights temptation, and even the tempter—and comes out victorious. He fights sin and conquers it with forgiveness. He even fights death, wrestling with it all the way to the grave. Even there he is a winner by rising from the dead on that first Easter Sunday. Jesus Christ is the undefeated champion of the universe. Yet the infinite greatness of Jesus is united to most perfect humility. Jesus conquers even sinful pride by power of humility.

We see the humility of Christ expressed in St. Luke’s gospel. Jesus points to the wisdom of and the preaching of . Jesus doesn’t say, “Solomon was great; I am the greatest. Jonah was great; I am the greatest.” Jesus does not have to point to himself, because he simply and humbly reveals himself. His approach? He says, “There is something greater that Solomon and Jonah here.” He is saying, “Look I made Solomon and Jonah. They are great. But God is always the greatest and you need to see that I am God.”

We also see the beauty of humility in the Blessed Mary, that Virgin most humble. In her prayer the Magnificat she says, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord. God who is mighty has done great things for me.” Mary saw great things going on within her and around her. She realized great things come from God. Instead of praising herself, she praised God.

This is a great and humble attitude for our parishes to take on, too. God does great things for us at St. Mary Nativity and Holy Cross. Your parking lot Masses have opened up Sunday worship to many people outside the parish. Your parish school has been on campus, healthy and growing in holiness since the beginning of the school year. Both parishes find themselves in a stable financial position in the midst of a worldwide pandemic shutdown. Thanks be to God!

St. Josemaria Escriva, in his book “The Furrow” reminds us that there are signs that we personally lack humility. Lent is a great time to prayerfully go over those points and see if any apply to ourselves. · Thinking that what you do or say is better than what others do or say; · Always wanting to get your own way; · Arguing when you are not right or — when you are — insisting stubbornly or with bad manners; · Giving your opinion without being asked for it, when charity does not demand you to do so; · Despising the point of view of others; · Not being aware that all the gifts and qualities you have are on loan; · Not acknowledging that you are unworthy of all honor or esteem, even the ground you are treading on or the things you own; · Mentioning yourself as an example in conversation; · Speaking badly about yourself, so that they may form a good opinion of you, or contradict you; · Making excuses when rebuked; · Hiding some humiliating faults from your director, so that he may not lose the good opinion he has of you; · Hearing praise with satisfaction, or being glad that others have spoken well of you; · Being hurt that others are held in greater esteem than you; · Refusing to carry out menial tasks; · Seeking or wanting to be singled out; · Letting drop words of self-praise in conversation, or words that might show your honesty, your wit or skill, your professional prestige...; · Being ashamed of not having certain possessions...

Let’s not be discouraged if many or even all the points apply to ourselves. The sin of pride is the first sin and as I said, it infects us all. Yet Jesus humbly accepted even death, death on the cross, so that he could fill you with the greatness of his divine life. With Jesus, let’s fight to the death to be more like him. Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like yours.

With my prayers, Fr. Jerome
