Sundareswari3 1,2,3Post graduate and Research Department of Zoology, Ayya Nadar Janaki Ammal College (Autonomous), Sivakasi - 626 124 ¹E-Mail address: [email protected] Abstract: A survey on the status and distribution of the reduviid bugs was undertaken at different selected agricultural fields of Rajapalayam Taluk, Virudhunagar district during April 2018 to March 2019. In the present investigation, 16 species of reduviid bugs belonging to 4 sub-families were recorded of which 5 species were recorded from paddy fields, 11 species were recorded from both cotton and brinjal fields and 13 species were recorded from mango plantations. The Margalef index (R1), Menhinick index (R2), Simpson`s index (λ), Shannon`s index (H`), Evenness indices and relative abundance were calculated. In the present study, the member of the sub- family Harpactorinae was most dominant and sub-family Ectrichodinae was less dominant. The minimum numbers of individuals reduviid bugs observed in paddy. Among the sixteen reduviids, Rhynocoris fuscipes population was higher in brinjal fields than that of other reduviid predators. Examination of 629 specimens collected from various localities of Karnataka revealed the presence of relatively 24 genera under 3 tribe viz., Harpactorini Amyot and Serville, Raphidosomini Jennel and Tegeini Villiers. For the recorded genera, dichotomous identification keys, diagnostic characters and illustrations of the genus habitats were provided to facilitate the easy identification. Introduction Harpactorinae Reuter, 1887 are the largest subfamily in the Famiy Reduviidae with 2,800 [1] described extant species in ~320 genera with diverse body shape, size and colour . They are characterized by elongated head, long scape, cylindrical postocular and quadrate cell formed by anterior and posterior cross vein between Cu and Pcu on hemelytron. Harpactorinae are economically important as beneficial predators of insect pests. The prey consumption ranges from stenophagy (specialists) to euryphagy (generalists). More than 150 species of assassin bugs are predators of insect pests and several species are used as natural enemies in agricultural ecosystem. A few species of Harpactorinae are successfully utilised in integrated pest management system include Pristhesancus plagipennis Walker against cotton and soybean [2], Zelus longipes L.

R. Ferreirak observations on the 18th century. Few data (mainly descriptions of new spe- cies) were published until 1980. Since then, important new data on the knowl- edge of the cavernicolousfauna have been published due the regional surveys made in Vale do Ribeira, Bambui and Altamira-Itaituba Speleological Prov- inces. A list of 613 taxa (537 invertebrates, 76 vertebrates) from 282 caves, based on bibliography and original data is presented. Many reduviid species play an important role in the food chain of animals and plants, as well as the ecological balance. Population dynamics of reduviid bugs were studied during June 2018- March 2019 in semi-arid area in Sivakasi Taluk. The reduviids were randomly collected and identified some field records. A total of 11 species belonging to 5 subfamilies were identified in selected study area. During the study period maximum numbers of reduviid bugs were recorded during the November 2018 and minimum numbers of reduviid bugs were recorded during March 2019. Monthly variation in relative abundance of reduviid population also noted. Various diversity indices were recorded and correlation co-efficient studies were carried out between reduviid bug diversity and weather parameters.
