The book describes the search for a cow, in which various animals that are Wheres My Cow? cows are identified by Wheres My Cow? noise they make. Sam eventually decides that this is a daft way to look for a cow, and that Young Sam should, in any case, be getting taught about Ankh-Morpork rather than animals he will only see on a plate. He therefore attempts to rework the story into what he calls the 'Vimes street version', about a search for "daddy" through the city, encountering such characters as Cut-Me-Own-Throat DibblerFoul Ole Ronand the Patrician. In Thud! Sam then stuck rigidly to the authorized version. In the framing story of Where's My Cow? There are three art styles in the book, all drawn by Melvyn Grant. The first art style is a fairly realistic style, with a slight cartoony feel. This is used for Vimes relating the story Wheres My Cow? Young Sam. The second style is that of the book within the book, which is simple, with thick lines and pastel colours. The pictures of Vimes and Young Sam are in front of these pictures, and do not interact with them. The third style Wheres My Cow? when Vimes starts changing the story. The Discworld characters are drawn in the same Wheres My Cow? as Vimes and Young Sam, but the pastel animals are still present, and all three settings the world of Where's My Cow? The objects in Young Sam's nursery also become animated. This quite possibly Wheres My Cow? Young Sam's imagination. The illustration of the nursery contains as an Easter egg a painting of the author himself, Terry Pratchett. Also of note is that the various other animals, which are mistaken for cows, are drawn in such a way that their outlines, combined with their surroundings, forms a cow shape. For example, the sheep has a tree's branches for horns and a rabbit chewing greenery for an udder, the Wheres My Cow? has a pitchfork for horns and a chicken for an udder, etc. In this book Vimes bears a passing resemblance to actor Pete Postlethwaite. Pratchett has previously commented that this is who he has always perceived Vimes as looking like, rather than Paul Kidby 's ' Clint Eastwood ' representation. So it contains scenes and pages from the Discworld novel but it is also about Vimes reading the book to the child and taking some fun artistic Wheres My Cow? just as he did in Thud! I was going to suggest that if you didn't like Discworld you wouldn't really appreciate this, but I think that's wrong. Of course, any Wheres My Cow? fan will undoubtedly find anything with Sam Vimes in it impossible to resist; he's one of my personal favourites, though I tend to imagine him younger and better looking we're all allowed our little perks. It definitely wasn't what I was expecting, either. I was expecting a book wherein the cow was eventually found by whomsoever might have owned it, b I was going to suggest that if you didn't Wheres My Cow? Discworld you wouldn't really appreciate this, but I think that's wrong. I was expecting a book Wheres My Cow? the cow was eventually found by whomsoever might have owned it, but it turns in to something much more magical and probably deeply philosophical, and very, very Vimes. The novel highlights these issues through the relationship between its main character, Brutha, and his god, Om, as they explore the world beyond the theocratic nation of Omnia. Their interactions with one another and the world at large are analysed with the help of fantasy and satire as well as real world equivalents for the ideas, ideologies and religions presented. Small Gods uses both religious and political satire in its efforts to criticise religion. In its political satire, the novel highlights the dangers of the intertwining of religion, state, and law enforcement, and questions religious expansion and censorship for power’s sake. Its religious satire, on the other hand, is more interested in religious figures, ideas and texts as it ridicules extremism within such institutions. These two types of satire are irrevocably linked to one another within the novel as those seeking political power do so through religious means. They are also used to highlight the individuals inside these outwardly dangerous institutions and show the conditions in which they practice their faith.

    Ankh-Morpork: The City as Protagonist Anikó Sóhar Université Catholique Pázmány Péter Abstract: In science fiction and fantasy, sometimes the city (whether it is real or imaginary) plays the leading role, for example New York in Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin, or London in Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Often, as in the case of Newford in several novels and short stories by Charles de Lint, a made-up city with its fictional topography and maps corresponds to and accentuates the social relations as well as the emotions embedded in the narration; the geography can indeed be emotional as it was so aptly put by Sir Terry Pratchett when he appointed Rincewind (one of his regularly popping-up characters) “Egregious Professor of Cruel and Unusual Geography of Unseen University” (among other jobs). Sir Terry also dreamt up a very significant city called Ankh-Morpork in his Discworld series (which might have been based on Budapest) which offers a perfect topic for discussion. Ankh-Morpork, which was a simple although very funny parody of a typical city in fantasy fiction at the beginning, gradually becomes a setting for emancipation, liberation and disenthralment from various bonds, and provides ample examples of references to British and internationalised culture. The city itself does not play a leading role in any of the novels, but when the whole series is taken into consideration, its significance is immediately apparent, the whole series forms a sort of bildungsroman which describes the maturation process of Ankh-Morpork. The whole sensational landscape created for our amusement as well as intellectual and moral benefit could be accurately mapped in terms of literary-cum-urban-studies, geopoetics, focusing on several aspects of social criticism.

In particular we will deal with the interplay of standard and non-standard British English by which the writer highlights cultural stereotypes as well as narrative ones; creating a children’s tale with a distinctively adult-like character set. Pratchett uses Tiffany Aching to explore the topics of non-traditional education, family dynamics and social hierarchies in a fantasy setting. By combining the mundane coming-of-age story with a fantastic adventure, he contrasts the escapist nature of a fantasy narrative with the inevitable growth of responsibility. The paper aims to explore the usage of non-standard language and its effects on the narrative and character components; the reader’s reception of this usage is an important factor in the communicative channel formed between the reader and the author. From regional varieties, this work uses Scottish dialect, but Pratchett mixes in some of his own creations, such as the Toad dialect. The author also uses grammatically incorrect phrases or sentences. Therefore, this paper will analyze the instances where Pratchett used non-standard British English and determine their narrative function. Furthermore, it will illustrate the importance of dialects which are viewed as separate languages of fantastic races. Samuel Vimes is the main protagonist of the Watch sub series of Pratchett’s Discworld book series. Vimes is the head of the police force, which is called the Watch, in Ankh-Morpork, the largest city on the Discworld. The first part of the essay examines Vimes’s character traits and personality, focusing on the three-part split in his personality and how it corresponds to the Freudian three part model of the psyche. The analysis of Vimes’s personality is an important foundation for further analysis in the essay as throughout the Watch series Vimes moves from being simply an alcoholic policeman in dented armor to being a respected and feared pillar of the community. The essay also deals with the beginning of Vimes’s growth as an established authority figure due to the recognition of his unique abilities when it comes to influencing and controlling Carrot Ironfoundersson, the secret heir to the throne of Ankh-Morpork and a fellow policeman.
