Night Watch by Terry Pratchett Night Watch is the story of Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh- Morpork City Watch, who finds himself cast back in time. Though living in the Ankh-Morpork of his youth is not always easy, he must survive as he has a job to do, which involves tracking down a murderer, teaching himself how to be a good copper, and changing the outcome of a bloody rebellion. The only problem is, if he wins he has no wife, no child – and no future. Since Nielsen's records began in 1998, Pratchett has sold around 10 million books in the UK, generating more than £70 million in revenue. His agent and original publisher, Colin Smythe says Pratchett has either written, co-written or been creatively associated with 100-plus books, notably Discworld titles, Despite this prodigious output, Pratchett is one of the UK’s most collectable authors, particularly for his early books and special editions. Stella Puhakka RELIGIOUS FAITH AND RATIONALISM IN TERRY PRATCHETT’S SMALL GODS Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences Bachelor’s Thesis November 2019 ABSTRACT Stella Puhakka: Religious Faith and Rationalism in Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods Bachelor’s Thesis Tampere University Degree Programme in English Language, Literature and Translation November 2019 This thesis examines the treatment of institutional religion, religious faith and believers in Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods arguing that the novel calls for transparency and fairness in religious institutions and critical thinking, understanding and tolerance from those with a belief system. The novel highlights these issues through the relationship between its main character, Brutha, and his god, Om, as they explore the world beyond the theocratic nation of Omnia. Their interactions with one another and the world at large are analysed with the help of fantasy and satire as well as real world equivalents for the ideas, ideologies and religions presented. Small Gods uses both religious and political satire in its efforts to criticise religion. In its political satire, the novel highlights the dangers of the intertwining of religion, state, and law enforcement, and questions religious expansion and censorship for power’s sake. Its religious satire, on the other hand, is more interested in religious figures, ideas and texts as it ridicules extremism within such institutions. These two types of satire are irrevocably linked to one another within the novel as those seeking political power do so through religious means. They are also used to highlight the individuals inside these outwardly dangerous institutions and show the conditions in which they practice their faith.

Ankh-Morpork: The City as Protagonist Anikó Sóhar Université Catholique Pázmány Péter Abstract: In science fiction and fantasy, sometimes the city (whether it is real or imaginary) plays the leading role, for example New York in Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin, or London in Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Often, as in the case of Newford in several novels and short stories by Charles de Lint, a made-up city with its fictional topography and maps corresponds to and accentuates the social relations as well as the emotions embedded in the narration; the geography can indeed be emotional as it was so aptly put by Sir Terry Pratchett when he appointed Rincewind (one of his regularly popping-up characters) “Egregious Professor of Cruel and Unusual Geography of Unseen University” (among other jobs). Sir Terry also dreamt up a very significant city called Ankh-Morpork in his Discworld series (which might have been based on Budapest) which offers a perfect topic for discussion. Ankh-Morpork, which was a simple although very funny parody of a typical city in fantasy fiction at the beginning, gradually becomes a setting for emancipation, liberation and disenthralment from various bonds, and provides ample examples of references to British and internationalised culture. The city itself does not play a leading role in any of the novels, but when the whole series is taken into consideration, its significance is immediately apparent, the whole series forms a sort of bildungsroman which describes the maturation process of Ankh-Morpork. The whole sensational landscape created for our amusement as well as intellectual and moral benefit could be accurately mapped in terms of literary-cum-urban-studies, geopoetics, focusing on several aspects of social criticism.

The fear of the other is mirrored in the stories we tell. Fantasy worlds allow the author to create a world separated from the real one, where we can meet new conceptions of the other. This thesis examines which others we encounter within the Watch sequence, part of the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, answering the research question: What Others do we encounter in the Discworld series, and how does Terry Pratchett use humour and fantasy to interrogate our conceptions of the Other. The theoretical part will first discuss who the other is, and how she has been theorised, then define Fantasy as a genre, and explore why it is suitable for examining social questions. The theoretical part ends with an exploration of humour, including the types of humour used within the Discworld series. This thesis then analyses three different types of others that are encountered on the Discworld: the Racial Other, the Nonhuman Other, and the Dehumanised Other. THUD! Boardgame (Original Rules) Gameplay The diagram shows the game's initial positions. "d" represents the dwarfs, "T" represents the trolls, and "X" represents the Thudstone. The octagonal playing area consists of a 15 by 15 square board from which a triangle of 15 squares in each corner has been removed. The Thudstone is placed on the centre square of the board, where it remains for the entire game and may not be moved onto or through. The eight trolls are placed onto the eight squares adjacent to the Thudstone and the thirty-two dwarfs are placed so as to occupy all the perimeter spaces except for the four in the same horizontal or vertical line as the Thudstone. One player takes control of the dwarfs, the other controls the trolls. The dwarfs move first. On the dwarfs' turn, they may either move or hurl one dwarf: Move: any one dwarf is moved like a chess queen, any number of squares in any orthogonal or diagonal direction, but not onto or through any other piece, whether Thudstone, dwarf, or troll; or Hurl: anywhere there is a straight (orthogonal or diagonal) line of adjacent dwarfs on the board, they may hurl the front dwarf in the direction continuing the line, as long as the space between the lead dwarf and the troll is less than the number of dwarfs in the line. This is different from a normal move in that the dwarf is permitted to land on a square containing a troll, in which case the troll is removed from the board and the dwarf takes his place.
