LECTURES AT OUR MEETINGS (Do you have a story or skill to share?) In keeping with our intent to educate our members on current training and significant events, Cpl PAPADAMOU lectured on his ex- periences on the final phase of the Junior Leadership course the “ Infantry Section Commander’s Course”. This is a very difficult course that challenges the participants’ knowledge and leadership abilities under very intense and physically demanding circumstances. It provides an excellent foundation for those seeking the responsibilities that come with “leadership”.

PRESIDENT ROSS ATKINSON’S MESSAGE CONTINUED … 2017 marks the 75th Anniversary of Dieppe. Your Executive is exploring opportunities to raise funds in support of our veterans and serving members participating in the Ceremonies in France. We hope to capitalize on this opportunity and expand the trip to include battlefield tours of WWI and WWII. Our annual Reunion Dinner will be held November 7th in conjunction with our Remembrance Day Church parade at St. James Cathedral. There will be a change of venue this year as the Sheraton Hotel has be- come too expensive for our younger serving members. Once we confirm the venue, we will send out a separate mailing with the ticket order form and information required. I would also like to take this opportunity to stress the importance that all our members pay their Annual Dues. These important funds ensure our continued support of the Newsletter, our support to members who are ill, and to the families of those who have passed. We also use these funds in our ‘Support the Troops” endeavor providing our serving members with a hot drink and snack upon their return from weekend exercises. I welcome and encourage all our members to take any opportunity they can to volunteer or support these important endeavors. Whatever time you can spare will be greatly appreciated and will help in ensuring the continued support of our Regiment and greater Regimental family. Please contact any member of the executive if you wish to volunteer. Once again, thank you for the opportunity to serve as your President. I look forward to working with you and for you as we support our membership and serving members. “Ich Dien” Ross Atkinson CD

The annual BATOCHE DINNER will take place on 8th May 2015 at the Royal Canadian Military Institute. For tickets please contact

Your future Newsletters will look back in time and present you with a brief historic review of a battle in which The Royal Regiment of Canada took part. These historic reviews will be based on the vignettes written by the late Major W.R. (Bob) Bennett CD. Bob was an intelligence sergeant with The Royal Regi- ment of Canada during WWII.

THURS 8 MARCH 1945

By Major W. R. Bennett CD Regimental Historian XANTEN OPERATION “BLOCKBUSTER II’ As Operation “Blockbuster” continued, the Germans had now been reduced to a bridgehead on the west bank of the Rhine facing the 1st from Xanten to Ossenberg, both on the river, with Wesel on the far bank of an easterly loop from these two towns. A front of about 8 miles that the enemy need- ed to evacuate his troops across the river. An attack on Xanten by 6 Cdn. Bde. on the 5th March was re- pulsed by the enemy. A planned assault named “Blockbuster II” upon Xanten, a town of 5,000 by 4th & 5th Cdn Bdes of 2nd Cdn Div and the 129th British Bde of 43rd Wessex Div was launched at 05:30 hrs, 8 March 1945*, with heavy artillery; but no air support due to weather and the fluid tactical situation at Roschof involving the RHLI attacking on the right, the Essex in the centre and The Royals on the left. The RHLI were delayed by a fac- tory complex on the Sonsbeck Road and the Essex were having considerable trouble with a stone house & windmill. Both regiments brought forward “Wasp” flame-throwers to dislodge the Germans. Though under heavy mortar and shell fire, the Royals pressed on past the Essex with “C” “and “D” Coys to their objectives. By noon “A” & “B” Coys were on their objectives, but with considerable casualties. Maj. R. I. C. Wedd, wounded in the leg, pressed on across the Sonsbeck Road with his “A” Coy to capture the small factory to his left when he was seriously wounded in the other leg. Unable to evacuate Bob Wedd at this time and with all Coy officers wounded, C103096 Sgt. Art J. Balfour ( previously wounded on 14 Jul 44 & 19 Jan 45, took command of “A” Coy and pushed into the Hochbruch area. Unfortunately, as Maj. Bob Wedd** lay in a shell-hole waiting for darkness and stretcher-bearers, he was hit a third time, by mortar fire, inflicting serious chest and head wounds before he was evacuated. By late afternoon the Royals made contact with the 129th Bde on their left who had arrived from Wardt after capturing Luttingen and were heading for Beek. In this battle the Royal Regiment had suffered 1 Officer and 10 other Ranks killed and 3 Officers and 40 ORs wounded, with 1 OR taken POW. The Royals captured 110 Germans. On the 9th March, Gen. Matthews of 2nd Div ordered 6 Bde to pass through and capture the Brick Works and 5 Bde to take the high ground and the Alter Rheine. 4 Cdn Armd Div had now passed south of Balberger Wald and were beginning their attack upon Veen. By the 10th March 1945, the 1st Cdn Army had liquidated the enemy bridgehead west of the Rhine, the Germans had withdrawn and blown the bridge to Wesel. The Allied Armies were now on the west banks of the Rhine, from Dusseldorf to Nijmegen.

**Major R. I. C. Wedd was evacuated and flown to England, where he died 16 March 45, and is buried in Brookwood Cemetery. His brother, Lt. W. G. R. Wedd, was killed 19 Aug. 41 at Dieppe, with The Royal Regiment of Canada. He is buried at Hautot-sur-Mer, Dieppe.

STARS AND CROWNS ARE BACK

Land Force Command has been restored to its historic identity as our Cana- dian Army (CA). Since the CA was restored, non-traditional names like “Land” or “Branch” or “Area” have reverted to traditional Canadian Army names like “Corps” and “Division”. The Minister personally requested that our new CA Flag, our next pocket badge, and our public affairs products fea- ture our historic CA badge. This day-to-day badge is based directly on our WWII to 1968 badge used by our historic Canadian Army. The Governor General also approved a new CA com- mand badge. The CA is now composed of its traditional Divisions. The Areas are now: 2 Div CA for- merly SQFT, 3 Cdn Div (LFWA), 4 Cdn Div (LFCA) and 5 Cdn Div (LFAA). The Divisions will receive coloured shoulder patches for wear on DEU and they will also receive tra- ditional flags. Trained soldiers in our Corps will also formally restore their traditional rank names: Trooper, Gunner, Bombardier, Sapper, Signaller, Fusilier, Guardsman, Rifleman and Private.

Therefore, The Royal Regiment of Canada is a regiment within 32 Canadian Brigade Group which is one of three Brigades within 4 Canadian Division (4 Cdn Div) formerly Land Force Central Area.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS Notification of a change of address is important to keep your name on the Association’s mailing list. When you move, please send us your new address using the Registration and Order Form. Keep the Association up to date about how you are doing and we will continue to inform you about your Regiment. The Executive sincerely appreciates your participation in the Regimental Family. SUPPORTING OUR TROOPS Our Association Members continue to provided coffee and donuts for members of our Regiment returning from weekend training. After a challenging weekend of training, our hospitality is well received. If you are interested in taking part in this activity, please check “Yes” on the registration form and mail it to us.

VETERANS’ WELFARE Important! If you know of any former members of the Regiment who need our support, please let us know. We may be able to help or find someone who can. VETERANS’ CONCERNS COMMITTEE (VCC) It is a tall order, but then the Veterans' Concerns Committee (V.C.C.) has some very tal- ented and experienced Members. They are in alphabetical order and without reference to rank, the following: Ross Atkinson, Val Flynn, Ron Saranic, and Gary Stafford. I am privileged to chair this committee (V.C.C.), and welcome useful tips, questions and suggestions at any time. I can be contacted at 519-741-0005 at home or at [email protected]

CANADIAN VETERANS BY NUMBERS With presently about 60,000 members in our Regular Force and close to 20,000 in the Primary Reserves, we may wonder how many living Veterans we have in Canada. After some sleuthing and information requests to Veterans Affairs Canada, I came up with the following results:

In 2014 there were an estimated 697,400 Canadian Veterans living. These numbers break down as follows: a. 88,400 or 12.7% had service in World War 2; (average age 90) b. 9,800 or 1.4% had service in Korea (1950-53); (average age 82) c. 316,700 or 45.6% had Regular Force service after 1953; (average age 56) d. 282,600 or 40.5% had service after 1953; (average age 53) (Because of split, dual or overlapping service, these numbers do not add up perfectly.)

The Primary Reserves have a much higher turnover rate, with 73% of Reservists, leaving the Forces, but only 27% of Regular Force personnel leave Military life before age 29!

A large number of Reservists use the Military either as temporary employment, or more often as a stepping stone in skill development for their eventual civilian careers. This same tendency is supported by the above numbers, which suggest there are about five (5) Regular Force Veterans for every presently serving Regular Force member. When it comes to the Primary Reserves, that ratio rises to about fourteen (14) previous Vet- erans for each presently serving Reservist. This higher rate of personnel turnover presents a much greater challenge to all Primary Reserve Units in terms of training, readiness and manpower costs.

It is our intent to start a series of short stories provided by veterans of WWII, Korea, Bos- nia, Afghanistan and other NATO or Peace Keeping Missions. If you would like to share your story , please send it to the Editor. They will be titled “A SOLDIER’S STORY” We are pleased to commence the series with the kind help of Pte. John Stewart Preece, B162941 In my youth, growing up in Toronto, in the lower end of town, there were few alternatives for a young man, so when presented with the opportunity to join the Norwegian Merchant Marine I took it. We sailed out of New York, (exciting for a 16 year old). I made one trip to the Mediterranean on an oil tanker; the Katy, and two trips to Cardiff and Swansea England on the freighter Martin Bakke. On returning to Toronto, I joined the Army. I took my basic training at Brantford, the advanced train- ing at Camp Borden and then left shortly for England and Battle Training. I spent Christmas and New Year’s of 1944 in England training somewhere around Aldershot. One evening in the barracks a notice was put up on the door that anyone who wanted to join immediately with the Royal Regiment of Canada was to put their name down and be prepared to leave quickly. I put my name down, as well as that of a friend of mine who happened to be out for the evening. Those of us on the list spent the rest of the evening being supplied with bullet bandoliers, hand grenades and gas capes etc. At four o’clock in the morning we were hustled out of the huts, loaded onto trucks and proceeded to an airfield, where a DC 3 and a Glider awaited us. Some went on the DC 3 and others went on the glider. I was on the glider. We took off shortly thereafter and I am not sure where we were headed. As we approached land, our glider was loosed and began to circle around what appeared to be a farmer’s field. The circling made all of us somewhat ill but J.S. Preece on Basic Training in Brantford ON we eventually landed and disembarked. We formed up on a roadway nearby, hanging around for awhile not knowing what to do next. We stayed overnight until trucks picked us up. After numerous other stops, I eventually was introduced to the Royal Regiment. I believe we were somewhere around the Hochwald Forest and Grosbeek in Holland. We moved through the Reichwald Forest on our way to Xanten, Germany, and were delayed in Xanten for a week or so. Continued—next page.

10 A “SOLDIERS STORY” CONTINUED

We left Xanten and continued over the Rhine on pontoon bridges, finding ourselves again in Holland. There was some degree of re- sistance. After a few days on and off trucks and tanks, on April 2, 1945, I found myself running across a road and jumping into former- ly held German trenches. I set up my Bren gun and started firing at German soldiers half a mile down the field. At that point I got hit, by an a attentive sniper. I ended up in a military hospital in Bruges, Belgium and after being diagnosed with gangrene was sent to England to a Canadian Military Hospital in Leavesden, Kent. After a convalescence of a few months, I volunteered to fight the Japanese. During this time we were informed of an upcoming parade through London which sounded exciting and I again volunteered. An English Sergeant Major appeared at the camp, lined us up, and after picking enough for a Platoon, he informed us that in preparation we would be doing more training and marching. I have great memories of this parade where there were representatives from various regiments. Shortly after this, we sailed home and after the war ended, I had the typical problems of adjusting to civilian life. I eventually found my- self at the University of Toronto where I obtained an Engineering and a Psychology degree, as well as obtaining my COTC and awarded a Lieutenant commission TB17891 in the RCEME Corps. I married Bonnie, had two daughters, Kathleen and Alexis and now a growing family of 6 grandchildren. I retired after working in Industrial Management with several large companies. On my return to Holland for the Commemora- tion of the 60th and 65th Anniversary of the Lib- eration of Holland, I was gratified to experi- ence the overwhelming appreciation and love that was shown to us Canadian veterans, thus making it all worthwhile. It was truly unfor- gettable. John Preece John & Bonnie will be part of the official Ca- nadian Delegation for the 70th Anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands.

SMALL ARMS TRAINER (SAT) Through the continued support of LCol Payne, our members can participate on the Small Arms Trainer (SAT). Using computer technology and work- ing replicas of the C7 Rifle, the SAT system real- istically provides members an opportunity to practise and improve their shooting and weapons handling skills. We anticipate that our members will uti- lize the SAT range between the hours of 7:00 pm and 8:00pm to facilitate their attendance at our meetings. Dress is casual on the range and dress for the meeting will be Tie and Jacket. The SAT provides a great op- portunity for us to experience current weapon training systems and we welcome all Association members to
