  • Putyoursticksout: Public Expressions of Grief on Twitter About the Humboldt Broncos Accident
#PutYourSticksOut: Public Expressions of Grief on Twitter about the Humboldt Broncos Accident TERILEE EDWARDS-HEWITT On April 6, 2018, after a playoff game in the amateur Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, a bus carrying members of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team collided with a semi-truck when the driver of the truck failed to yield at a flashing stop sign. Fourteen people on the bus died, two others critically injured died later in hospital, and thirteen were injured. While tributes occurred locally, individual performances of public grief were shared by over 30,000 Twitter users in the week after the accident, many by people who had no direct connection to the team or that region of Canada. Social media offers powerful ways to document, share, and mobilize social movements such as Black Lives Matter, Occupy, and Me Too. In addition to large, powerful movements and events, much of social media’s content is concerned with commerce or the minutiae of everyday life. A significant aspect of social media is sharing, which includes the positive and negative aspects of life (Christensen and Gotved 3). Social media allows people from around the world to associate with others who share the same interests, creating new virtual social networks of people (Sanderson and Cheong 328). This new network of online communities enables social media users to share grief with others and create new mourning rituals (Christensen and Gotved 4; Pantti and Sumiala 120). Death is an inherently social phenomenon (Christensen and Gotved 1). The increased prominence of speaking to physical death online is growing interest in online memorial culture (Christensen and Gotved 2).

  • Old Wounds Will Be Opened up and We Want Families to Know They Are Supported’
‘Old wounds will be opened up and we want families to know they are supported’ It’s been a year since a nation was united in grief, waking up early one spring Saturday morning to the news that a team of young men pursuing their hockey dreams was torn apart in a horrific crash. The tragedy would claim 16 members of the Humboldt Broncos’ family and leave 13 others with various physical and emotional scars they will carry a lifetime. It’s a day that resonated beyond the hockey community. Across Canada, and over borders, millions were shaken by the deaths of the players, coaches and team officials on April 6, 2018, a Friday afternoon when the bus carrying the Junior ‘A’ Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League to their next playoff game with the Nipawin Hawks collided with a transport trailer near the community of Tisdale in northern Saskatchewan. It’s a grief that will be replayed as a town and a nation remember. Humboldt’s multiple faith groups have organized a memorial service for April 6 at the Humboldt Uniplex, which houses the rink the Broncos’ call home. Rev. Joseph Salihu Rev. Joseph Salihu, pastor at St. Augustine’s Parish in Humboldt, said the anniversary is another of the peaks and valleys the town’s populace has dealt with since the crash. “This tragedy has its own rhythm,” said Salihu. “There’s been a lot of climax, then anti-climax. It gets private, it becomes public then private again.” With the anniversary, the national media has been focused on the crash once again.

Nothing - including a virus - should be used to justify people’s hatred of the Asian population. Those who blame Asians for the pandemic are misguided and sometimes driven by a strong political narrative underpinning their evaluation of what is considered true. Unfortunately, Canada and America have been hotspots for increasing hate crimes against the Asian population (South Korean, Chinese, and Southeast Asian people) which has left them much more vulnerable and frightened. Anti-Asian sentiments have formed through the (misinformed) belief that Asian people should be blamed for the spread of the corona-virus and therefore vengeance should be taken. The data speaks loud and clear how anti-Asian hate crimes have rapidly increased: “According to live data from Fight COVID Racism, there have been 891 reported incidents of anti-Asian hate crimes across Canada as of mid-day March 17, 2021.” It has become evident that we have a lot to learn and many people to educate to prevent the growing hate crimes.
