Quentin, now based at Leeds in England, won the Naumburg 20km roadwalk on Sunday in a time of 1:22:16, a 40 second PB and yet another A qualifier in the leadup to this year's IAAF World Championships in Russia. Quentin has made huge inroads into his times over the past 18 months and was one of the big improvers in the Olympic 50km where he finished 30th in a PB of 3:55:03. Since then, he has been racing superbly over the shorter distances, recording 19:52.43 for 5000m in Athlone in Ireland and 1:22:56 for 20km in Lugano last month. Now he has improved even further with his first New Zealand record. Sunday's performance took four seconds off Craig Barrett's national record set in Adelaide in 1998. Quentin went through the first 5km mark in 20:44 and then walked each subsequent 5km faster, recording 20:41, 20:27 and 20:24, to win the race by 21s. He has already been named in the New Zealand team for the world championships in Moscow in August, in the 50km race walk event but has now shown his all round talent with his two 20km A qualifiers. Quentin walks alongside South African Marc Mundell in last year's Olympic 50km in London (photo www.zimbio.com) VRWC ROAD RACES, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 27 APRIL 2013 Last Saturday saw the VRWC Winter Season kick off at Middle Park in inner Melbourne in very windy conditions. The day clashed with the AV Cross Country Relays so a number of our walkers were missing but we still saw 84 competitors and large fields in all divisions. And the big news is that the day ran smoothly all with events getting off on time and no issues. Terry Swan was there with his camera and has uploaded a good variety of photos to our photo gallery at http://www.vrwc.org.au/coppermine/. All photos are labelled so you can always search on your name and the date of the event to make life easier. Stuart Cooper sends our results in each week to the Melbourne Age and the Melbourne Herald Sun and most times they do get a guernsey. This week, they didn't make it into the Herald Sun but they did make it into the Age online results - see http://www.theage.com.au/sport/results/sport-results-for-saturday-april-27-20130427-2im6h.html. And a special welcome to all our first time walkers this week - Donna Urquhart, Milly and Marley Berntsen, Taylor Vasiljevic, Nikola Mandic, Mackenzie Mielczarek, Natalie and Bianca Morrow, Kate Daly, Meg Sparkes, Alexandra Charlotte and Angus Hay, Clare Noonan, Angela Lane and Marcus Byron. And welcome back to Megan Szirom (over from Adelaide), Nicole Hallett and Cassie Raselli. Our events this week were points events, meaning that all current club members were vying for Actual Time, Handicap and Style Award points. Note that handicaps points can only be allocated if the walker has subsequently walked that or a similar distance in the recent pass in VRWC competition. That means that first up walkers can't get Handicap points this week but they will be eligible on our next points day. You can read more about our points competitions at http://www.vrwc.org.au/vrwcpointscomps.shtml. The 8km Open event saw Megan Szirom 41:12 and Simon Evans 41:07 walk very impressively to take line honours while Emily Hamilton 48:20 and Cody McNicol-Davidson scored maximum handicap points. 8km Open Time Hcp 1. Competing in Round 1 of the Athletics Victoria Shield competition in Melbourne last Saturday, he nailed the 2000m walk with a superb 7:39.1. That's not too far off his PB of 7:29 and confirms his early season form. With the 2016 Olympics beckoning, I am sure he will be pulling out all stops this summer so stay tuned! Rhydian in action during the winter season at Middle Park WHAT'S COMING UP Victorian walkers have a week off formal competition this coming weekend, with the Melbourne Marathon taking centre stage on Sunday morning. Athletics Victoria Shield competition continues with Round 2 on Saturday 24th October. And our own VRWC summer season kicks off with roadwalks at Middle Park on Sunday 25th October. You can check out our summer season fixture at http://www.vrwc.org.au/vrwcs16.shtml. All we can do at this stage is hope for the best. The NO campaign has been well run and has gained support from almost the entire world wide racewalking community. Let's not lose sight of what we want. • Keep the current 20km / 50km as the international racewalking distances until after the 2024 Olympics. • Use this extended timeframe to properly test the new shoe insert technology. • Work to enhance the current 20km / 50km events to make them more attractive to the general viewing public. • Visit this issue (if it still exists) again in 2024 once the shoe insert technology has been deemed to work (or not!) A few final bits and pieces from the last few days of the ongoing campaign. First, we have been getting some publicity from a few major news outlets. Record Tom Bosworth th Race Walking 6 at Rio Olympics in a new August 2016 British Record Race Walking Record – August 2016 Over the next two kilometres, Bosworth sped up and was within eight minutes for the next 2km split around the Pontal course. But Matsunaga was race walking even faster and had closed the gap to two seconds, while China’s Zelin Cai decided to protectively cover the two men in front of him and had pushed hard to remove himself from the pack. World Race Walking Team Championships silver medallist Cai continued to motor and overtook Matsunaga and then Bosworth but The XXXI Olympic Games, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil the pack also started to increase their pace, consuming Bosworth and Men’s 20km (Fri. 12th Aug.): Despite the presence of Olympic Matsunaga just before the 14km checkpoint and Cai shortly after, champion Chen Ding and world champion Miguel Angel Lopez, the making it a 12-man mass together entering the final quarter of the pre-race favourite on current form was China’s Wang Zhen and the race. winner at the IAAF World Race Walking Team Championships in The pack – which also contained local hope and Brazilian record- Rome back in May didn’t disappoint. holder Caio Bonfim, who was getting rousing cheers every step of the way – was reduced to nine over the next lap with Cai, whose cadence can best be described as a resembling a boxer doing his road workout, pushing the pace at the front. This remained the state of affairs until Wang, a much more fluent and elegant race walker than his teammate, made his decisive bid for glory with three kilometres to go.

The “Quentin-ssential” in the headline is a reference to New Zealand 50K specialist Quentin Rew, a veteran of two Olympics (27th at London 2012 in 3:55:03; 12th at Rio 2016 in 3:49:32) and five World Championships (23rd at Daegu 2011 in 4:08:46; 16th at Moscow 2013 in 3:50:27; 10th at Beijing 2015 in 3:48:48; 11th in London 2017 in 3:46:29; and 11th at Doha 2019 in 4:15:54). Rew has already qualified for Tokyo 2020, having bested the time limit of 3:50:00 by 12 seconds at the Japanese National Championship last year in Wajima.

For Jared, it was another fantastic top-eight finish and it was in the lesser of his two Olympic events. With the Olympic 50km event this week, Jared upped the ante even further, taking his second successive Olympic 50km silver medal and recording a 2+ minute PB time of 3:36:53, also breaking the Olympic record into the bargain. What a performance! He came 2nd in the U16 3km at the LBG Carnival in June (14:24) and is another young walker on the rise. Well done Heath! My best guess is that interclub might get underway after Christmas if our count stays down. But it’s all guesswork and speculation at this stage. Stay tuned! PAUL F DEMEESTER TALKS MATTERS IAAF AND IOC Thanks to US Attorney at Law Paul F. DeMeester for another insightful analysis. That is the 27 th in a row and it’s a beauty.
