I just didn't like the use of latin words salted throughout the book. I also felt it was boring at the time. Fast forward a couple of years of pretty much exclusively reading Roman novel's, I decided to give Fire In The East another go, and I'm really glad I did. This time around I wasn't bothered with the latin words peppered throughout the book. I felt they gave it a unique signature. I also didn't find the first half boring. I felt it created great character development and a awesome detailed account of what it would take to prepare for a siege. The second half of Fire In The East is brilliantly executed and Harry Sidebottom definitely did his research to bring to life the horrible reality of what a siege was like. Before I'd even finished this book, I ordered books 2-4, with plans to shortly order books 5 6. I can't believe I've been missing out on these for a couple of years.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Cool story, good writingBy E. BuchholzThis was fun to read and I grew to enjoy the characters. I couldn't quite tell how much was adventure, how much is (theoretically) accurate history, or what. Some of the names were very cliche (Ballista, Maximus, etc.) but perhaps that is actually the way things were. I cannot tell. The siege was fascinating and it was not obvious how it would end. Okay, I could tell where it was going, but not how it would come about. This book felt like a potentially good author warming up. I have just completed the second in the series and Sidebottom's writing is better, though he is not at all bad in this one.The story and characters were fun and I did not want to stop reading. It's been a while since I have felt that way about a book.I have just placed orders for books 3, 4, and 5. I'm looking forward to more.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Slow Start to a Fantastic SeriesBy Wolfgang MercerBy the time I had reached the last hundred or so pages of Fire in the East, I could hardly put it down, but the first hundred or so were very slow. I don't really hold this against the story, because there is quite a lot to set up.What makes this book, and the series as a whole, worth reading is the profound sense of historical authenticity. Though I am not as much an expert in Roman history many readers may be, I never encountered anything that took me out of the historical setting. We see the Roman Empire as it probably was for most of its inhabitants, not the glorious emperors and marble columns, but the day to day details that make it all come alive. Warrior of Rome I: Fire in the East is Harry Sidebottom's historical debut. The year is AD 255 - the Roman Imperium is stretched to breaking point, its authority and might challenged along every border. The greatest threat lies in Persia to the east, where the massing forces of the Sassanid Empire loom with fiery menace. There the isolated Roman citadel of Arete awaits inevitable invasion. One man is sent to marshal the defences and shore up crumbling walls. A man whose name itself means war: a man called Ballista. Alone, Ballista is called to muster the forces and the courage to stand first and to stand hard against the greatest enemy ever to confront the Imperium. This is part one of Warrior of Rome: an epic of empire, of heroes, of treachery, of courage, and most of all, a story of brutal bloody warfare.Dr Harry Sidebottom is a leading authority on ancient warfare - he applies his knowledge with a spectacular flair for sheer explosive action and knuckle-whitening drama. Fans of Bernard Cornwell will love Sidebottom's recreation of the ancient world.Praise for Harry Sidebottom:'Sidebottom's prose blazes with searing scholarship' The Times'The best sort of red-blooded historical fiction' Andrew Taylor, author of The American BoyDr. Harry Sidebottom is Fellow of St Benets Hall, and Lecturer at Lincoln College, Oxford - where he specializes in ancient warfare and classical art. From Publishers WeeklyIn this blood and guts tale of ancient warfare, Oxford lecturer Sidebottom introduces readers to Marcus Clodius Bastilla, a third-century warrior who has risen through the ranks of the Roman army to achieve citizenship and the honorific of Dux Ripea. Charged by the emperors Valerian and Gallienus with the responsibility of defending the empire's eastern borders, Bastilla says good-bye to his new wife and sets sail for the East. Once he arrives at the Syrian city of Arete on the banks of the Euphrates, Bastilla organizes his legionaries to defend against the besieging Sassanid Persian army and hold out until reinforcements can arrive. In addition to having his hands full with the invading army, Bastilla must also deal with traitors, saboteurs, assassins and patrician officers who resent obeying the orders of a low-born superior. How the brave and resourceful former barbarian defends himself from forces both within and without the city walls forms the spine of this action-packed and detail-rich narrative. This novel of sharp swords and blunt wit should find an appreciative audience among bloodthirsty battle boys of all ages. (Oct.)
