 E-Footy RECORD 26th - 27th April 2008 Issue 5 Editorial with Marty King EXCITING TIMES AS “GC17” BEGINS TO TAKE SHAPE It’s been an historic week for Queensland football, with the offi cial launch of “Gold Coast 17”, the group that has the inside running on the 17th AFL license. AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou was on the Gold Coast on Tuesday to formally invite the Gold Coast bid team, headed by John Witheriff, Graeme Downie and Alan ‘Doc’ Mackenzie, to ac- cept the challenge of forming a club. Then on Wednesday, in Surfers Paradise, we saw the offi cial launch of GC17, which will be the name via which the bid team and its process will be known over the next six months. It’s an exciting time for everyone in football, but we cannot afford to take for granted the fact that the license will automatically be awarded to this group. There is now a lot of hard work to be done, and it will require the support of everyone connected with football. Among the criteria set out by the AFL for the group to achieve before the license is issued were:- • Support of at least 20,000 potential members, business support of at least 111 sponsors, and other revenue sources. • The ability to deliver fi rst-class training and administration facilities • The development of a brand identity for the new club that refl ects the Gold Coast. • The ability to build community support that engages the whole Gold Coast community. • The capacity to build the Football Team (in partnership with AFL Queensland) and to be ready to compete in a second tier competition in 2009. • The ability to build a strong organisation on appropriate governance and business principles. • Preparation of business plans for 2008-2010 and 2011-2015. I believe fi rmly the Gold Coast is ready for this challenge. All the work and research the AFL has done over the past two years provides a very strong economic, social and football case in support of a Gold Coast team. Also, there’s an excellent blend to the three key members of GC17. John Witheriff, Managing Partner of Minter Ellison – Gold Coast, has a unique expertise in business, tourism and law, while Graeme Downie, former Lions chairman, brings a wealth of AFL and fi nancial experience, and ‘Doc’ Mackenzie, 34 years Southport FC president, is at the forefront of local football on the coast.

So, I encourage everyone to get behind GC17. Don’t just expect it to happen – help to make it happen. And stay tuned for further updates as the second Queensland AFL team takes shape.
