Story & photos by Dan Davidson

The City of Dawson Recreation Dept. lit up the pre-Christmas season with a Celebration of Lights in the Waterfront Park on the evening of November 20. Citizens were attracted to the lighted shelter and the large bonfire in the pit next to the Tribute to the Miner statue. The active minded set off on a Santa led glow stick run/walk along the dyke path about 5:55, while other folks arrived to fill up the heated and lit Picnic Shelter for a hot meal and a carol sing with the St. Paul’s Youth Choir, led by Betty Davidson. By 6:30 everyone was well fed and sung and it was time for the main event of the evening. The crowd lined up along the top of the dyke path and counted down 5- 4- 3- 2- 1 to the flip of the switch that fired up the new light displays along the park between the Picnic Shelter and the Front Street Gazebo. Santa and his reindeer (moving even) gave way to several sets of lit figures that have a vaguely turn of the 19th century ambiance that fits in with the town’s origins. The lights will be on for the rest of the pre-Christmas and holiday weeks as part of the town’s effort to encourage businesses and residences to light up for the season. A number of businesses have trimmed up already and list of downtown stores were open for extended shopping hours on this night, as part of the Shop Photos (top down and to the Local theme encouraged by the Dawson Chamber of Commerce. left): At the end of the season plaques will be awarded for best residence, best business and best block. – Lining the dyke for the This is the first year for the Celebration of Lights, and for this countdown to the lights. year at least, it has been chosen to replace the town’s annual Christmas Open House in council chambers. - Santa and his reindeer light up the park.

Submitted by the Fire Department

“How many times have we heard that one must train, train, and then train again to be more proficient at something - especially when it revolves around life-safety,” said Dawson Fire Chief Jim Regimbal. “That makes complete sense to me and has throughout my career in fire fighting. But how many times have you stopped and wondered if you are training correctly?” That is why Gregg Geske, the compressed air foam (CAF) systems product manager of Waterous, travelled from St. Paul,Minneapolis, to provide us with the proper training and use of the new OneStep CAF system that is on our new fire truck. “The entire OneStep CAF system is pre-engineered so that (fire truck operators) don’t have to think about it,” Geske said. “It’s all about ease of operability.” “That ease of use also translates to fast, effective and safe fire fighting operations,” Geske said. “Operators aren’t wasting valuable time on the fire ground trying to calculate the best foam New fire truck proves to be an asset at ratio or the proper pump pressure – and they’re not wasting even more time trouble shooting when their calculations aren’t correct.” Sunday night’s house fire Geske also commented on how conscientious the members of Story & photo the department are. To come in on a weekend to receive training by Dan Davidson says a lot about your commitment to the community you serve. Klondike Valley and Mount Lorne were also on hand for the training. “I want to thank the manufacturer of the truck, Fort Garry and Dawson’s firefighters responded to a house fire at the Sollosy residence at 737-7 th Avenue shortly in particular Gil Bradet, who is their Yukon representative, and after 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 9. The call had reported one person in the house but when the firefighters arrive the RCMP informed them the house was empty. the Dawson City Fire Department for their hospitality,” Geske said. “We were able to gain access into the house and extinguish the fire in short order,” said fire chief “ And a special kudos to Chief Regimbal for first initiating this Jim Regimbal. - training as a must when he was at the Fort Garry fire truck plant The cause of the fire was still under investigation at this time of in inspecting the truck prior to its delivery. That problem has since been rectified, but the fire chief notes that this is just another argument in favour of territory-wide 911 service.
