Surrender and Realisation: Imam Ali on the Conditions for True Religious Understanding James Morris Do not seek to know the Truth (al-Haqq) according to other people. Rather first come to know the Truth—and only then will you recognise Its people.1 One of the most striking characteristics about those surviving oral traditions that have come down to us from the earliest periods of each of the world-religions—as with the Gospels, the earliest Buddhist teachings, or the Prophetic hadith—is the distinctive directness, simplicity, and extreme concision of those original oral teachings. It is as though everything else that follows is only a kind of endlessly extended commentary on those few simple words. Certainly this is true of many of the surviving sayings attributed to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (d. 40/660)— including the short, but highly memorable passage that is the focus of this study, which has inspired repeated commentaries and elaborate theological and even dramatic interpretations down through the centuries. The wider significance of this particular passage is that it illustrates so perfectly Ali's emblematic role as the fountainhead of virtually all the esoteric traditions of Islamic spirituality, both among the many 1 A well-known saying commonly attributed to Ali, here as cited by al-Ghazali at the beginning of his famous spiritual autobiography, the Munqidh min al-Daial. -

Para ulama bersependapat bahawa hanya Asya‘irah, Maturidiyyah dan Athariyyah (Ahli Hadis dan Hanabilah Mufawwidah) sahaja yang terangkum dalam istilah Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah, tidak termasuk aliran- aliran yang lain. Kajian berbentuk kualitatif deskriptif ini memberi fokus secara khusus kepada keutuhan metodologi yang dipegang oleh mereka dengan tumpuan khas terhadap metodologi ilmuwan hadis dalam kalangan mereka. The author, Professor Abdul Azim Islahi, is a well-known specialist in the history of Islamic economic thought. In this respect, we have already published his following works: Contributions of Muslim Scholars to th Economic Thought and Analysis up to the 15 Century; Muslim th Economic Thinking and Institutions in the 16 Century, and A Study on th Muslim Economic Thinking in the 17 Century. The present work and the previous series have filled, to an extent, the gap currently existing in the study of the history of Islamic economic thought. In this study, Dr. Islahi has explored the economic ideas of Shehu Uthman dan Fodio of West Africa, a region generally neglected by researchers. He has also investigated the economic ideas of Shaykh Muhammad b. Abd al-Wahhab, who is commonly known as a religious renovator. Perhaps it would be a revelation for many to know that his economic ideas too had a role in his reformative endeavours. -

Having just traveled through nine Muslim countries, ranging from Pakistan and Bangladesh to the Gulf States, Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon, I would answer that it is leading, slowly but surely, to reassessment and change.' Attempts to accelerate the pace of this change, however, without full understanding of its complex topology, and the deep-rooted commitment by most Muslim women to spiritual and cultural authenticity, could halt or even reverse this process at great cost to women particularly and Muslim societies as a whole. -

The Seljuks of Anatolia: An Epigraphic Study Abstract This is a study of the monumental epigraphy of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate, also known as the Sultanate of Rum, which emerged in Anatolia following the Great Seljuk victory in Manzikert against the Byzantine Empire in the year 1071.It was heavily weakened in the Battle of Köse Dağ in 1243 against the Mongols but lasted until the end of the thirteenth century. The history of this sultanate which survived many wars, the Crusades and the Mongol invasion is analyzed through their epigraphy with regard to the influence of political and cultural shifts. The identity of the sultanate and its sultans is examined with the use of their titles in their monumental inscriptions with an emphasis on the use of the language and vocabulary, and with the purpose of assessing their strength during different periods of their realm. -

R. Iran The problem of evil as one of the strongest arguments against the ex- istence of God is discussed a lot by theologians of different religions. The purpose of this article is to study the philosophies and wisdom behind the presence of evils in man’s life by appealing to the Qur’an, the traditions of the Prophet Mohammad and his household as well as to intellectual argu- ments, as three main sources of Shia Islam. By extending the realm of life from the material world to the life after death, this study puts man in a more extensive paradigm and intends to show that for a believer, the existence of evils does not contradict having faith in a just, kind, omnipotent and omniscient God. One of the important points which are given attention in this article is a differentiation between the responsibility of man and that of God. This point clarifies how in many cases the roles of the claimant and of the defendant are confused. Yunus Fakultas Ushuluddin dan Filsafat UIN Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh Emial: [email protected]) Abstract: Kajian mendalam terhadap filsafat ketuhanan dan tasauf tergolong kajian serius. Ahmad Daudy termasuk salah seorang yang mengkaji persoalan-persoalan tersebut secara serius. Tujuan penelitian ini ingin mengetahui konsep filsafat ketuhanan dan tasauf melalui karya tulis Ahmad Daudy. Sebagai penelitian kualitatif, pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui penelusuran kepustakaan guna menemukan data-data yang dibutuhkan untuk keperluan penelitian. Adapun hasil penelitian yang didapatkan, bahwa Ahmad Daudy dalam membahas konsep filsafat ketuhanan mendasarkan pemikirannya pada Alquran, pendapat filsuf, dan pendapat teolog Islam, hal ini sangat beralasan karena ada beberapa persoalan dan dianggap rumit untuk dijelaskan seperti hubungan antara sifat Allah dengan zat-Nya. Sehingga masalah ini tetap menjadi pokok sengketa yang sangat mendasar antara sesama umat Islam dalam upaya memahami zat dan sifat Tuhan. Menurut Ahmad Daudy, sekiranya umat Islam tidak mempertanyakan masalah ini dan bersikap tafwid dan tanzih menyerahkan hal itu kepada Allah Swt, seperti yang diperlihatkan oleh para ulama salaf terdahulu, maka perbedaan pendapat yang mengarah ke permusuhan sesama umat Islam tidak akan terjadi. Mengenai tasauf, Ahmad Daudy berpendapat, bahwa tasauf tidak dikenal dalam generasi awal Islam, tasauf datang pada umat Islam dengan jalan hidayah. Pada abad ke 8 dan 9 M tasauf mulai dinyatakan sebagai suatu sistem ajaran. Dan dalam perkembangannya menjadi sangat filosofis dan konseptual. Tauhid dalam tasauf sifatnya ontologis, sehingga dalam memahaminya memiliki tingkatan-tingkatan, yaitu antara yang dipahami orang awam dan orang sufi. -

CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO A New Reading on Authority and Guardianship (wilayah): Ayatollah Muhammad Mahdi Shamsuddin Hamid Mavani Islam categorically rejects dictatorship because it always leads to oppression, persecution, and uprising.1 From the Islamic point of view, only the divine (most exalted), who has no partner or associate in His Lordship, Authority, and Guardianship (wilayah), has the right to govern and enjoy absolute rule. In essence, no human being has any right to rule over others. The rule and control of God is the only type of guardianship and authority that complies with human reason and intellect. Every mandate of authority and governance (hakimiyyah) for a human being requires a definitive proof. In its absence, therefore, no one has authority over another person, any other existent in the universe, or over nature, including over one’s own life and property.
