Hank Williams By: Sarah Lewis, Baylee Gillanders, Samuel Carpenter, Thomas Serratore, Subhasree Sengupta Why Hank Williams? -One of the primary reasons why Hank Williams is so interesting is because we don't know much about him personally. -Williams left behind very little about his life, namely interview records, letters, and journal entries -It is apparent that Williams did not boast about his obvious success, however he is still regarded as one of the most influential and popular figures in music history Introduction HankH was born on September • He was one of the most popular Country music singers/ songwriters of his time. • He is the father of contemporary country music. • He was a superstar by the age of 25, but sadly he was dead by 29. Growing Up • Hank was born Hiram King Williams on September 17th, 1923 in Mount Olive, Alabama. • His mother gave him his first guitar when he was 8. • He had spina bifida which is why he turned to music for comfort • Hank was alone for much of his life, his mom was busy with work and his father was in a veteran's hospital. Musical Background • His musical education was provided by a local blues street singer, Rufus Payne, who was called Tee Tot. • Hank started performing in Alabama in his early teens. • He had his own band at the age of 14 called Hank Williams and his Drifting Cowboys- they had a regular spot on a local radio station Musical Career • Hank first signed with MGM label where he got his first hit, "Move it On Over" and had "Honk Tonkin", with a second billboard success.

  • “Hank Williams: Lost Highway” KNS Preview
Hank Williams' life, music tunes up Clarence Brown season BY: Amy McRary POSTED: 12:15 PM, Aug 30, 2014 KNOXVILLE - Hank Williams' life, music tunes up Clarence Brown season The Clarence Brown Theatre opens its 2014-15 season with "Hank Williams: Lost Highway," a music-filled biographical look at the legendary country singer's life and music. Williams left a songbook of now country classics, among them "Your Cheatin' Heart" and "Hey Good Lookin'," before his death at age 29. The 10-member cast of "Hank Williams: Lost Highway" includes a four-piece band. Williams' songs and their back stories are incorporated in the play that begins with his rural Alabama upbringing, moves to his Grand Ole Opry stardom and, ultimately, to his demise. Shows are Sept. 4-28 on the University of Tennessee Carousel Theatre stage; the production's more than 20 songs include Williams' hits "Hey Good Lookin'," "Move It On Over" and "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." (Knoxville has its own Williams connection. The singer spent part of New Year's Eve 1952 — his last night alive — at what was then Gay Street's Andrew Johnson Hotel before dying in the back seat of his Cadillac en route to a Canton, Ohio, show.) Chicago-based actor/musician Peter Oyloe reprises his performance as Williams. The Iowa native has played the singer in "Hank Williams: Lost Highway" productions from Chicago to Florence, Ala. Other cast members include UT visiting artist David Kortemeier as songwriter and music publisher Fred "Pap" Rose and visiting artist Horace Smith as singer Rufus "Tee-Tot" Payne.
