Scheduled to be completed during Spring 2020, the initial announcement of the project was made at a press conference on January 17, 2019 with First National Bank providing a $1 million lead gift. Beshears Construction is the general contractor for the project. Forsgren Inc. is providing earthwork and field prep, and Frontier Engineering is supervising turf installation. “This is an experienced construction team” said FSBGC executive director Jerry Glidewell. “We will be able to use this multi-purpose facility for baseball, football (flag & tackle) soccer and cheer” he added. Robert E. Miller has been a staunch supporter of the Boys & Girls Club for the past 4 decades, serving as board president (1994-1995), co-chair of the Goldtrap Boys & Girls Club capital campaign (1992-1993), on- going donor to the FSBGC College Scholarship program, and previous chair of the UAFS Foundation board. In April 2000, the Miller Branch Library was opened in honor of Robert and his late wife Joan. The Miller’s were loyal customers, advocates and financial supporter of the Library system. Joan Miller passed away in 2003. A few years after Joan’s passing, Robert married Nadine Hardin. Robert and Nadine have continued to strengthen our community through their charitable work. Robert E. Miller is founder of the Community Rescue Mission and was instrumental in the groundbreaking for it’s new campus in March 2019. Miller has led fund raising efforts for the Antioch for Family & Youth organization. He is a long-time supporter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has provided manpower and resources for several church-related missions for building water The life of Robert E. Maurras has served on the FSBGC board for the past 11 years and has been chairman of the FSBGC College Scholarship committee. As a member of several local boards and non-profits, Hugh is a respected community leader. He’s past chairman of the United Way campaign, past president of Sparks Hospital (Baptist Health), and has chaired the Christ the King Endowment. Maurras served on the citizens committee for the Vision 2023 plan for the Fort Smith Public schools. He is a graduate of SMU. Page 6 www.fsbgc.org Winter 2020 Applications Available For Boys & Girls Club College Scholarships High School seniors interested in applying for College Scholarship support from the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club can visit www.fsbgc.org to download a scholarship application. Deadline for submission is April 1. Applicants must have participated at the Club as a member (or volunteer) for a minimum of two years. Financial need, Boys & Girls Club participation, and academic excellence are key components committee judges consider when making scholarship selections. The committee conducts interviews with all new applicants. Selections are announced by May 1, and scholarship presentations are made at a board luncheon in June. Winter classes for guitar, taught by Lee Carter, are being held at Evans, Jeffrey and Goldtrap. Winter classes for piano, taught by Brenda Davis, are being held at Stephens. This is the fourth year the Club has provided free musical instruction to members. For the past 10 years, donors have provided financial support while giving recognition to friends or family members during the holidays. The Boys & Girls Club provides acknowledgment cards to those being honored. “A gift to feel good about” is the tag line for the fundraiser, which is a special way to help families that are impacted by unemployment, poverty, or disadvantaged circumstances. Hot Dog Tradition Continues Through Kiwanis Club Members of the Noon Kiwanis Club celebrated the New Year with the annual “holiday hot dog luncheon” at the Boys & Girls Club on January 2. Kiwanis volunteers helped serve the meal, which has been a tradition by the Kiwanis for more than 30 years. “It’s always energizing being around the kids and staff” said Kiwanis member Terri Settle. Both Jones and Needham are previous Boys & Girls Club college scholarship recipients, a program that is partially sponsored by the Alumni Association.

Rodney West will serve as President. He succeeds Patty Cox, who was Alumni President in 2018-2019. Eric Burnett will serve as Vice-President. Emily Pressley was re-elected as Secretary, and Wilson Ward will be Treasurer. Officers serve for two-year terms. Rodney West is a long-time volunteer and sponsor at the Club. He is area president of Simmons Bank and has been very involved with FCA and the Childrens Shelter. He is a graduate of Westminister College and is a former FSBGC College Scholarship recipient. Ward is a long-time volunteer at the Club, where he’s coached football, basketball and baseball.
