Good news: A joint meeting of the Legislature’s Public Health, Welfare and Vice Chair-Marilyn Wheeler Labor committees reviewed with no objection on Monday July 6 to ban new [email protected] medium or large hog farms in the watershed for the next five years. This is not a done deal yet but if things go as planned, after 5 Secretary/Treasurer – Kay Ewart years, the Department of Environmental Quality would initiate actions [email protected] to make the ban permanent or to delete it.

Day Hikes/Outings – Steve Heye Questionable news: Cargill, the 134 billion dollar conglomerate that is the 501-455-2210 primary support for the C&H hog farm on Big Creek, has agreed to sell its pork [email protected] business to JBS, a giant Brazilian animal protein provider. There is no current

indication of how this will affect the C&H operation. For a glowing summary of

Conservation Chair - Position Open JBS’s “environmental stewardship” consult the company web page. As a sign of encouragement, JBS has pledged to eliminate confined breeding pens for swine.

Paddle Trails Editor – Carmen Quinn Modification hearing for C&H: ADEQ agreed to let C&H distribute effluent 501-993-1883 from both ponds and to use certain kinds of sprayers. Most of the comments [email protected] received by ADEQ during the hearing were dismissed as being not pertinent to the issue at hand.
