  • Entertainment: Can New Voice Coaches Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams Mesh with Adam Levine and Blake Shelton?
Entertainment: Can New Voice Coaches Gwen Stefani and Pharrell Williams Mesh With Adam Levine and Blake Shelton? Author : Throughout the last decade, there have been countless reality singing competitions fighting for our viewership. American Idol used to be king, but for the last three years, The Voice has dominated the ratings, and it just keeps getting better. What separates The Voice apart from other singing shows is its eclectic mix of coaches. The artists have ranged from Cee-lo, Christina Aguilera, Usher, and Shakira, with mainstays Blake Shelton and Adam Levine. This season, both Aguilera and Cee-lo have parted ways with the show for the fall (Usher and Shakira fill the chars during the spring), making way for the most musically gifted set of coaches in the show’s history. This year, the show has added two extremely talented coaches in Pharrell Williams and Gwen Stefani. Both Stefani and Williams come from very extensive musical backgrounds, and have been very influential in the pop culture scene of the last 20 years. Gwen has had success with the band, No Doubt and has had a very impactful solo career with songs like Sweet Escape, Cool, and Hollaback Girl, a song which was co-written by Pharrell. Pharrell Williams is best known for his most recent single “Happy”, but the singer has had much success as a producer. He has produced songs for not only Gwen, but many other big-name artists including Ludacris, Clipse, and Snoop Dogg. In addition, Williams also is part of hip-hop group, N.E.R.D.

Being involved in different environments made him depend on music to connect to other people. Transition into Fame • He first came into fame as a songwriting and production duo, Neptune, with his friend Chad Hugo in the 90s. • They produced hits for artists ranging from Jay-Z to Britney Spears. He produced some artists most well known songs such as Nelly’s “Hot in Herre,” Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl”, Kelis’ “My Milkshake Brings All the Boys to the Yard,” and Justin Timberlake’s “Senorita.” • In a study done by Complex, during 2003, The Neptunes were responsible for 43% of the songs playing on the radio in the United States.

west coast music Everyday People Please find attached the ‘Everyday People’ song list for your review. SPECIAL DANCES: Please note that we will need to have your special dance requests, (i.e. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm that the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have time to locate sheet music and audio. In cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. Clients are not obligated to send in a list of general song requests. Many of our clients ask that the band just react to whatever their guests are responding to on the dance floor. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs they want played and avoided. If you desire the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested), we would ask for a minimum 80 requests. ‘LOW ROTATION REQUESTS: We will also need any General Requests that are chosen from the ‘Low Rotation’ portion of this song list (pages 8-9) FOUR WEEKS in advance prior to your event. The songs from the ‘Low Rotation’ section are not in the active Everyday People song rotation, so the band would need the extra time to prepare them MODERN/TOP 40 24k Magic – Bruno Mars Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen A Thousand Years – Christina Perri Call You Girlfriend - Robyn Adorn – Miguel Can’t Feel My Face – The Weeknd Ascension – Maxwell Can’t Hold

  • The Symbolic Rape of Representation: a Rhetorical Analysis of Black Musical Expression on Billboard's Hot 100 Charts
THE SYMBOLIC RAPE OF REPRESENTATION: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF BLACK MUSICAL EXPRESSION ON BILLBOARD'S HOT 100 CHARTS Richard Sheldon Koonce A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2006 Committee: John Makay, Advisor William Coggin Graduate Faculty Representative Lynda Dee Dixon Radhika Gajjala ii ABSTRACT John J. Makay, Advisor The purpose of this study is to use rhetorical criticism as a means of examining how Blacks are depicted in the lyrics of popular songs, particularly hip-hop music. This study provides a rhetorical analysis of 40 popular songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles Charts from 1999 to 2006. The songs were selected from the Billboard charts, which were accessible to me as a paid subscriber of Napster. The rhetorical analysis of these songs will be bolstered through the use of Black feminist/critical theories. This study will extend previous research regarding the rhetoric of song. It also will identify some of the shared themes in music produced by Blacks, particularly the genre commonly referred to as hip-hop music. This analysis builds upon the idea that the majority of hip-hop music produced and performed by Black recording artists reinforces racial stereotypes, and thus, hegemony. The study supports the concept of which bell hooks (1981) frequently refers to as white supremacist capitalist patriarchy and what Hill-Collins (2000) refers to as the hegemonic domain. The analysis also provides a framework for analyzing the themes of popular songs across genres. The genres ultimately are viewed through the gaze of race and gender because Black male recording artists perform the majority of hip-hop songs.
