Aptly named the “Garden” of Ireland. Corrie lakes, U-shaped valleys, alpine heath and mountain cliffs captivate the visitor in a largely uninhabited landscape with vistas of the Irish Sea. Discover the picturesque valleys of Glenmalure and the Glen of Immal. Hike in the rugged beauty of Lugnaquilla and experience the peace and tranquillity of Glendalough. This is home to a 6th century monastic settlement nestled in the valley of two lakes. In addition to this the warmth of the people, the cosy pubs, the charming villages and delicious organic food and you have just found your “perfect” Wicklow Way Hike! DAY 1, ARRIVAL IN DUBLIN Arrive to Dublin and make your way to your first nights’ accommodation in a Dublin City Hotel. Dublin, the capital of Ireland offers a mix of old and new, with historic buildings dating to the 13th century, contrasting with state of the art infrastructure, and is a hive of activity Transfer time from Airport to Hotel approx. 50 minutes. Your welcome pack will be waiting for your at your first accommodation. DAY 2, HIKE DUBLIN TO ENNISKERRY You will be transferred/driven by Taxi across the city to begin your first walk at Marley Park to the start of the Wicklow Way. You walk through Marlay Park before rising to cross the Dublin Mountains, enjoying sea and mountain views. Crossing the boundary into County Wicklow and descending into the Glencree Valley you walk to your accommodation in Enniskerry village. Overnight Enniskerry. Walk Details: Approx. Distance – 17.00km | Height gain - 665m | Height loss - 502m | Max Height - 489m Terrain: Path, some road walking, forest track and mountain path. Can be wet underfoot. Boots essential. DAY 3, HIKE ENNISKERRY TO ROUNDWOOD Back on the Wicklow Way you continue across the Glencree Valley, around the shoulder of Djouce Mountain and over White Hill to finish in the lovely village of Roundwood. This walk takes you past the impressive Powerscourt Waterfall before climbing to walk around Djouce Mountain to your high point for the day on White Hill. As you descend you have glorious views of the spectacular glacial lakes of Lough Tay and Lough Dan. Overnight in Roundwood. Walk Details: Approx. Distance – 23.00km | Height gain - 828m | Height loss - 866m | Max Height - 625m. Terrain: Forest track, some road walking, mountain path. Some sections can be very wet and boggy. Boots essential. DAY 4, HIKE ROUNDWOOD TO GLENDALOUGH Leaving Roundwood you walk over Paddock Hill to the village of Laragh at the entrance to the valley of Glendalough. Today’s walk takes you around the perimeter of the Barton Estate before crossing Paddock Hill and descending by an old Mass Path to Laragh. You will have time to continue to Glendalough to visit this wonderful monastic settlement which is a truly magical place which demands time to enjoy. Overnight in Laragh/Glendalough. Walk Details: Approx. Distance – 9.50km | Height gain - 350m | Height loss - 424m | Max Height - 366m. Terrain:Some road walking, mountain path and forest track. Boots essential. DAY 5, HIKE ENVIRONS OF GLENDALOUGH Today gives you an opportunity to explore the environs of Glendalough in greater detail. You may wish to visit the buildings of the monastic city and the interpretative centre or to do one of the shorter walks in Glenmacnas, Glendasan or to the lead mines in Glendalough. Alternatively, you may wish to do the beautiful woodland walk beside the river in the Devil’s Glen. A number of private bus companies offer transport from Glendalough, which makes it possible to do excursions to Rathdrum (Parnell’s homeplace) or Avoca (Ballykissangel). Overnight at Laragh. Walk Details: Distance: variable, according to choice of walk. DAY 6, HIKE GLENDALOUGH TO GLENMALURE From Laragh/Glendalough walk into the valley of Glendalough before climbing to cross over into the valley of Glenmalure. This walk follows an old “green road” to near the Upper Lake before climbing steeply beside Paul an Eas Waterfall and continuing to the pass of Borenacrow (option to climb Mullacor Mountain from the pass). Descending into Glenmalure – with good views of the valley and Lugnaquilla, which is the highest mountain in County Wicklow – you finish your walk at the pub in Drumgoff/Glenmalure crossroads. Overnight in Rathdrum. Walk Details: Approx. Distance – 12.00km | Height gain - 595m | Height loss - 589m | Max Height - 608m. Terrain: Track, forest track, short section of mountain path. Mountain path is boggy. Boots essential. DAY 7, HIKE GLENMALURE TO GLENDALOUGH From Drumgoff/Glenmalure crossroads we start today’s walk, which crosses the mountains back to Laragh by a different route. Following forest tracks, you climb to the summit of Mullacor. The route continues along the mountain ridge to Cullentragh Mountain and Derrybawn Mountain, before descending to Glendalough. Alternatively, if the weather is unfavourable you can descend from Mullacor via the Wicklow Way through the forest. Overnight at Laragh/Glendalough Walk Details: Approx. Distance – 12.00km | Height gain - 595m | Height loss - 589m | Max Height - 608m. Terrain: Forest track and mountain path. Boots essential. DAY 8, DEPART LARAGH After a full Irish Breakfast you have the option to return to Dublin via the Public Bus or Private Bus services, both available from Glendalough/Laragh. There is also a Bus and Taxi service to Wicklow Town were there is a good Train service, south to Rosslare, and north to Dublin. Bus transfer time to Dublin City centre is approx one hour. OPTIONAL EXTRA DAYS Day 2, Hike Dublin City Trek - Dublin City Trek … See the historical side of this modern European City and follow the trail of “Molly Malone” as she wheeled her wheelbarrow…. through Dublin’s fair city !!! Global crises come and go. Not so the climate emergency and loss of biodiversity. This crisis is here to stay and in our betrayal of nature, we have caused it. Irreparable damage to Planet Earth, our home, has already happened. Now is the time to act much more decisively to halt further damage. If we don’t look after our home, where will we live? The challenge presented by climate change and loss of biodiversity is being answered by everyone; local communities, governments and global agencies.

    Bray 1919-1922 civil war In the House of Commons on 20 th October 1920 an outline of outrages carried out in Ireland between 1 st January 1919 to 18 th October 1920 were read into the record and included Courthouses destroyed 64, Royal Irish Constabulary 513, Raids on Mail cars 741, Raids on Coastguard stations and lighthouses 40, Policemen killed 117, Policemen wounded 185, Military killed 23, Military wounded 71, Civilians killed 32, Civilians Wounded 83, Private residence destroyed 148. Many of these outrages were carried out in County Wicklow or had a connection with the county. On 09/04/1920 Sergeant John Edward Brady died from gunshot wounds received when the Barracks at Rush County Dublin was attacked. John Brady was 50 years old and a native of Bray County Wicklow. In April 1920 Blessington Courthouse was destroyed and the quarter sessions of the court was transferred to Bray. This caused hardship on persons from Blessington who were making an application before the court of excise licence, dog licence or civil actions. They had to make the journey to Bray Courthouse. On the 16 th December 1920 a Military Court of Inquiry was established in lieu of an inquest There are two records held in the British National Archives at Kew in London with reference to Bray area. On 26 th November 1920 a Peter O’Rourke from Monastery, Enniskerry, Bray County Wicklow fell from a tree at Tinnehinch, Enniskerry and died, his inquest was held under the Court of Inquiry. The second case was the possession of firearm without a licence on 9 th May 1921, Matthew Farrell of Roundwood, Bray County Wicklow was prosecuted.
