All staff were congratulated and presented with Certificates by Nurse Director, Professor Hazel Borland. The Flying Start NHS® Programme exists to support newly qualified colleagues in their transition from student to registered practitioner, through a series of learning activities reflecting on their experiences during their first 12 months in post. In total, the 56 staff who completed the development programme this year were invited to attend the event, along with their mentors and managers who supported them. The REAL in Mentorship Awards acknowledge the outstanding mentorship supporting pre- registration nursing and midwifery students. Third year students from University West of Scotland, Glasgow Caledonian University and the Open University were invited to nominate individual mentors and teams who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in mentoring proficiency. In total, 138 nominations were received from across all settings across Ayrshire & Arran including Care Homes and the independent sector. The Key note speakers of the day included: Cheryl Harvey (Programme Lead) on the launch of the revised NES Flying Start programme, Staff Nurse Katy Chan on her experience of being mentored in a community setting and Staff Nurse Keith Allan on his experience of the Open University, having dyslexia diagnosed and the support he was given as a result. Our Flying Start Completers for 2017 2 of 9 Sharing of Care Opinion Postings on Social Media Over the past few months, the Communications Team have been linking with the Feedback Manager and updating NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s Social Media accounts with Care Opinion posts that have been made by users of NHSA&A. Initially, a selection of positive CO posts were shared that generated some positive publicity and dialogue across Twitter and Facebook. During this period, there has also been a noticeable increase in the number of views of the NHSA&A posts, which is currently around the 20,000 (up from just over 10,000 in the previous Quarter). Encouraged by this, we have now began to share some more critical posts to acknowledge that sometimes we do not get it right, and when that happens, we are committed to learning and making the necessary improvements. The first negative post (screen grab on right) has been extremely well received and has already attracted some very positive feedback about our organisational transparency. The team at CO are delighted, as we are one of the first Boards to share negative stories on these platforms. This week we have earned the highly sought after CO Hero status (complete with badge! (below)) Feedback from Gina Alexander, Director Care Opinion Scotland: “We were so excited to see “your” tweet yesterday. It is wonderfully refreshing to see this level of transparency from Boards. It just feels so real and honest but we also know it feels a bit scary! So for bravery, courage and a spirit of “feel the fear and do it anyway”, I am nominating you today’s CO Hero! We’ll be able to use your use of social media (and NHS Grampian Comms team’s) to demonstrate the art of the possible. We think you are just the type of Comms professional needed in health and social care! I’ve attached a “badge”, wear it with pride” An update on the Area Laboratories UKAS Assessment Process Laboratory services are in transition from Clinical Pathology Accreditation to the internationally recognised ISO 15189:2012 standards (Medical laboratories - requirements for quality and competence). UKAS are the only UK accreditation body which can grant ISO 15189:2012 accreditation. The new ISO 15189:2012 standards are significantly more stretching that the existing CPA standards, as is the nature of the inspection process. 3 of 9 The assessment process is a 4 year cycle with the UKAS inspection team carrying out a number of assessment visits to our departments. Some fantastic news, while the Microbiology Service was granted ISO 15189:2012 accreditation in February 2017, this accreditation has been maintained following a further UKAS visit on 2nd September 2017. Further good news, Biochemistry have just heard from UKAS team that they have cleared all their findings from their visit in April 2017 and are awaiting final decisions regarding accreditation. While Pathology staff have been working hard to clear findings relating to the wider pathology service following assessment in March 2017, we have been advised that the Andrology Service findings have cleared and are awaiting a final decision regarding accreditation. This could result in Ayrshire and Arran being the first Pathology Laboratory in Scotland and one of only a handful of UK Laboratories having an accredited Andrology Service. Haematology and Blood Transfusion are also in the process of providing evidence to clear findings following a visit in August 2017 and these are due to be submitted by 1st December 2017. All the teams and the Quality Manager have done an incredible job in meeting this new challenge of UKAS ISO accreditation. Local Conversation in East Ayrshire On 24 November 2017, Eddie Fraser Director of Health and Social Care hosted the third annual East Ayrshire Local Conversation; welcoming over 80 people to our event in the Grand Hall Kilmarnock. This event is part of our public engagement programme and is primarily aimed at local residents, community and voluntary organisations. A number of employees were also in attendance. The event included a presentation from Craig McArthur, Chief Finance Officer and Head of Service Finance & ICT, East Ayrshire Council on the East Ayrshire Council’s Transformation Plan. Eddie Fraser then briefed the participants on the ambitions, challenges and opportunities which will be part of our new Strategic Plan for 2018/21. Participants were invited to share their views on what they feel are the priorities for local communities over the next three years. Workshops showcasing 4 of 9 some of the good work that is already happening with partners to support our strategic priorities were also available. The event was closed with some musical entertainment provided by Emily and Olivia, 5th year pupils from Grange Academy, accompanied by Mr Darren Ramsay. Shaping the Future of Community Health and Care Services Together Annemargaret Black, Head of Service Community Health and Care Services – has a programme of engagement events underway to involve and consult with employees on the future delivery of services. Six sessions over November and December are taking place with a further stage of hackathons planned for the early New Year. Scottish Social Services Council Roadshows Eddie Fraser, Director of Health and Social Care invited our 600 personal care employees from across East Ayrshire to attend a workshop as part of programme between July and December 2017. Our personal care employees are our frontline service reaching our residents who are in the need of the greatest support to allow them to remain in their own homes. The Director used the opportunity to encourage people to take up the opportunity to complete their SVQ level 3 and increase the number above the current 80%. The employees were also briefed on the latest review of our and development of our new Strategic Plan and were encouraged to participate in the consultation programme which will go live between early December and end of January 2018. Partnership working – a Winter Wonderland at Ayrshire Maternity Unit For the past 18 months a partnership between East Ayrshire Health & Social Care Partnerships Community Justice team and various departments of NHS Ayrshire & Arran such as Public Health, Organisational & Human Resource Development and Corporate Support Service have developed a partnership based on a shared commitment to achieving the healthiest life possible for the population of Ayrshire and Arran. This has enabled service users sentenced to carry out unpaid work as part of a community payback order the opportunity to participate in meaningful work. Unpaid work has the potential to prevent or reduce episodes of mental health issues such as depression in service users, as by participating, there can be improved social connectedness and a widening of social networks. Unpaid work also supports the development of key life skills and builds routine into the lives of service users who often may lead chaotic lives. Physical activity levels of service users are often increased as many of the tasks require the service user to be active throughout the working day meaning they comfortably meet the national physical activity recommendations of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on five days per week. The latest area of work has seen service users revamp an unkempt garden within Ayrshire Maternity Unit into a beautiful ‘Winter Wonderland’.
