Since valuations of the former type are in most cases positively correlated with satisfaction of functional requirements, this amounts to a defense of a radically weakened version of aesthetic functionalism. It is divided into three parts. The first part deals with general works, background information, and introductory readings of various sorts. The second part is arranged, roughly speaking, according to the topics that will be addressed in the course. The third part is a reference section, in which I simply list the most important books and articles and offer a few comments on some of them. I wrote this guide mostly for beginners. I have therefore placed special emphasis on introductory works and have tried to limit myself to works in English. But where it seemed useful or necessary I have not hesitated to mention works written in other languages. I have also made a special effort to single out books and articles that have struck me as especially telling or informative, never mind how difficult or advanced they may be. I hope that this procedure will make it easy for you to start reading where it will be most profitable for you, and to keep reading for a long time to come once your interest has been awakened. The Conceptualization of Time and Space in the Memory Theatre of G Camillo
Nordisk Museologi 2003 • 1, s. 51–70 The conceptualization of time 51 and space in the memory theatre of giulio camillo (1480?–1544)1 Anne Aurasmaa In the 17th century collections became ideally more or less the presence of all things material. Interest leaned towards the mundane and the common and collecting became a gathering of everything. This trend can already be seen to some extent in the natural history collections of the 16th century. As a counterbalance to this I would like to put forward in this paper the idea that the 16th century collections pictured the whole universe as a construction combining time and space. It was not the intention just to fill rooms with collected material examples but to present the phenomena by showing their boundaries and to help the spectator to understand the building blocks of the universal hierarchy. The theatrum mundi – or curiosity cabinet, as 16th century collections are more commonly referred to – was conceived as a presence of all that existed in one place. Instead of collecting everything, and claiming that such a collection would represent the world as it is (or as it can be perceived by the senses), rhetorical themes, abstract ideas and universal structures were visualized by means of displaying the strangest objects from the most faraway places. The function of such displays was to bridge the gap between the universal logos2 and the human logos. Logos meaning reason and structure is the opposite of myth and personal sensory experience and as such includes thinking, speech, relations and regularities. The concept can be used both in reference to universal order and to the faculties of the human mind. -

CHRIST’S COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE JH PLUMB COLLEGE LECTURESHIP AND FELLOWSHIP IN HISTORY FURTHER PARTICULARS Teaching at Cambridge University is provided by the University and also by the Colleges. The majority of College Fellows are holders of University posts, taking on additional College responsibilities for which they usually receive extra remuneration. However, from time to time, Cambridge Colleges make appointments to College Lectureships. When appointed, College Lecturers not only provide core teaching for the College (or sometimes for other Colleges under swap arrangements) but may also be asked to act as Directors of Studies or take on other College offices or duties as appropriate. These Fellows may, if the opportunity arises, also teach for the University on occasional lecture courses, for extra remuneration. College Lectureships at Christ’s College are intended to provide an opportunity to an individual at the beginning of his or her academic career to develop teaching skills, a publication record and other academic activity with a view to obtaining a University appointment in Cambridge or elsewhere. They are offered for a fixed term of four years, which will not be renewed or extended. College Teaching College teaching takes the form of small group teaching (referred to as supervisions) each week, usually in groups of one or two. There are two Terms of eight weeks (Michaelmas and Lent); the third Term (Easter Term) has four weeks of teaching and three weeks set aside for University examinations. The successful candidate would be expected to supervise at least 120 hours per year for the College, equivalent to an average of six hours per week in Full Term. -

It is a great pleasure to see you all here, a distinguished audience of Nordic historians, hono- ring this hour with your presence. For me it is a privilege. This is a congress I hold dear. In times when international conferences have grown in size and numbers I have always thought it is immensely valuable to keep the Nordic community of historians alive and well, not for nostalgic reasons but because “Nordic” is an appropriate level of focus and analysis. Shortly before traveling here I finished the concluding chapter for a book with a Nor- wegian publisher on the tradition of Folkeopplysning in the Nordic countries since the 17th century.1 One of my ongoing papers right now is an analysis of the influence in our region of the famous Berkeley historian of science, environment and feminism, Carolyn Merchant.2 Other contributors to that book write of other themes, I write of the Nordic countries. I can swear she had some influence since I took a PhD course for her at Umeå University in 1984, but I am confident there is more…! Nordic is real. -

The Concerto for Bassoon by Andrzej Panufnik: Religion, Liberation, and Postmodernism. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2016, 128 pp., 2 charts, 23 musical examples, references, 88 titles. The Concerto for Bassoon by Andrzej Panufnik is a valuable addition to bassoon literature. It provides a rare opportunity for the bassoon soloist to perform a piece which is strongly programmatic. The purpose of this document is to examine the historical and theoretical context of the Concerto for Bassoon with special emphasis drawn to Panufnik’s understanding of religion in connection with Polish national identity and the national struggle for democratic independence galvanized by the murder of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko in 1984. Panufnik’s relationship with the Polish communist regime, both prior to and after his 1954 defection to England, is explored at length. Each of these aspects informed Panufnik’s compositional approach and the expressive qualities inherent in the Concerto for Bassoon. The Concerto for Bassoon was commissioned by the Polanki Society of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was premiered by the Milwaukee Chamber Players, with Robert Thompson as the soloist. My name is Henriette van der Blom, I’m a Senior Lecturer in Ancient History at the University of Birmingham and I am the principal investigator of the Crisis of Rhetoric research project sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, together with my colleague Professor Alan Finlayson, Professor of Politics at the University of East Anglia. We’ve been conducting this project for a couple of years now and this is the finale that you’ve been invited to come and share in, where we are launching the findings that you have all received on your seat. ANDREAS DORSCHEL Life’s Work. Wagner’s Tristan and the Critique of Biographism1 Interpretation would be impossible if the expressions of life were utterly unfamiliar. It would be unneces- sary, were there within these expressions nothing that was unfamiliar. Interpretation, therefore, must take place between these two opposite extremes. Wilhelm Dilthey I. Mozart composed his great G minor Symphony because he was in a dark mood, Schubert set the cycle of poems Die schöne Müllerin to music because he was unhappily in love, Wagner created Tristan und Isolde because he was having an affair with Mathilde Wesendonck, Brahms wrote his Four Serious Songs because he sensed his approaching death: such assertions fulfil all the criteria of biographism. It is everywhere, yet at the same time hardly a reasonable person feels at ease with it. This contra- dictory state of affairs gives us good reason to examine the question of what makes biographism attractive, and what makes it inappropriate. Proponents of biographism attempt to draw conclusions from works about the mental makeup of their authors – and vice versa. In the simplest case this procedure is circular: Mozart wrote his G minor Symphony because he was in a dark mood. What is the evidence for this? The G minor Symphony. And what explains the genesis of the symphony? The dark mood. There may of course be independent evidence of this mood. A composer may have expressed such a mood in letters. However, this hardly makes biographism any more acceptable as an explanation of art. After all, 63 Andreas Dorschel many people get into dark moods, and yet they do not write symphonies in G minor – and certainly not this particular one, KV 550. -
