The Maze Cup Is Named After George Maze, Sr. He Was a Tireless Volunteer for Both the Southern California Tennis Association (S The Maze Cup is named after George Maze, Sr. He was a tireless volunteer for both the Southern California Tennis Association (SCTA) and Northern California Tennis Association (NCTA). He originated the idea of bringing the top juniors from both sections for practice and competition against each other before the players headed East for the summer National Junior Championships. A little history on George Maze: He was born and raised in Modesto, California. His father was in the farming business in that area. George attended and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1940. He was always a devoted tennis enthusiast during those years and played at the Berkeley Tennis Club. He did what everyone else did at that time. At the outbreak of World War II, he served in the Navy as a lieutenant. George and his wife, Sheila, also a tennis player, were married in 1950. At that time they moved to Bakersfield, where he entered the farming business. They immediately joined the Bakersfield Racquet Club and became die-hard tennis players with George serving on the Board of Directors with a term as president. They had 3 children: George Jr., Joan and Bill. It would go without saying all three were introduced to tennis as soon as they were able to walk. They rapidly progressed through the local tournament scene and played all the tournaments in the Southern California sanctioned circuit. George was probably the most enthusiastic, motivated, creative tennis parent that ever came out of the Bakersfield area. His ideas and determination to make them happen was a leading factor in the success of the Junior Development program in that community. His youngest son, Bill, became an extremely gifted player who showed signs of talent at an early age. He was at the top of the heap from the 10’s on in the SCTA tournaments. Unfortunately for Bakersfield, George had a change of occupation in the late 60’s and the family moved to Northern California. His idea of what we now call the Maze Cup originated in Bakersfield. The competition that is the Maze Cup is a concept George Maze envisioned in the 1960's when the likes of Erik Van Dillen and Jeff Borowiak from the North, and Stan Smith and Bob Lutz from the South, were dominant players in the nation, but never competed against each other in California. Further, he felt there was a natural rivalry between the two preeminent sections of the USTA; the Northern California and Southern California Sections otherwise operate independently of one another. He pursued it with both Sectional offices. In 1972, George was able to experience a dream of every tennis parent. Bill, with his father present, won the USTA National 16 Boys singles at Kalamazoo, Michigan. Two years later, he went on to be a finalist in the 18’s singles Upon his untimely death in 1973, the two sections created the Maze Cup. This is a vision that has stood the test of time, it has provided an annual venue for the best juniors in the country in a format designed to prepare the players for the vigors of the all-important summer season. The first affair was held at the Fig Garden Racquet Club in Fresno in 1974. It has continued alternating each year from Northern to Southern California. The Bakersfield Racquet Club has been proud to host the event each year the Maze Cup has been played in Southern California. The Maze family has continued its close association with tennis. George Maze Jr., an attorney in the Bay area, is a past president of the Northern California Tennis Association, Joan is a realtor in San Francisco, played four years for the Cal Berkeley tennis team and continues to compete in USTA League tennis, and Bill Maze is the Women’s Tennis coach of University of California at Davis. 1 OVERALL TEAM WINNER 1. The winner of the Maze Cup Team Trophy is the team with the most points. One point is awarded for each match won with a total of 20 points available. 2. If the team score is tied 10-10, the winner will be determined by the team losing the least number of sets. 3. If the tie is still not broken, the winner will be determined by the team with the most games. AGE DIVISION TROPHY WINNERS Individual trophies will be awarded to the players that win the most matches in their age division. A total of 5 points are available per division (4 singles matches and one doubles match). The team winning the most matches within that age division will claim the individual trophies.
