After the premiere of the Double Sextet in May 2008 everyone was instantly convinced: here came a new masterpiece of Steve Reich. This impression was confirmed a year later with the award of the Pulitzer Prize for music. Work for two identical sextets consisting of flute, clarinet, violin, cello, vibraphone and piano can be performed in two ways: by a sextet that has included himself on tape and in duet with itself, if at all live by two sextets. The latter version is perhaps the most spectacular because then intention and intensity of the music happen most emphatically. That's why eighth blackbird, the ensemble which Reich wrote his Double Sextet and the Dutch Luna Park that challenge. Reichs exciting score gets a warm introduction by works of the Dutch composer Mayke Nas and American composers David Lang, RECOG ISES Bermel, Tom Johnson and Bryce Dessner, leader of the renowned band The National. This concert is sponsored by the Performing Arts Fund . The composition assignment Bryce Dessner is made possible by a contribution from the Eduard Van Beinum Foundation.
