• One great thing about podcasting is that you can do it at home with a basic Mac or PC and an inexpensive microphone (which may come with the computer). High-end equipment is nice, to be sure, but many of the best podcasts out there are recorded and edited with basic equipment and widely available software.

• For serious podcasters, the list of necessary equipment is as follows:

• Microphone • Digital recorder (or computer) • Sound-editing software • Headphones and preamp (optional) Microphones

• Two main types of microphones are used for podcasting:

• Dynamic microphones The advantages of a dynamic microphone are that it is cheaper to make than a condenser microphone and can be miniaturized more easily

• Condenser microphones The advantage of a condenser microphone is that it has a very broad frequency response; the down side is that it requires a source of power (like a battery) to charge the capacitor so that it can work.

• Logitech USB Headset and Desktop Microphones Priced $16 to $50, the Logitech USB Headset and desktop microphones are a low-cost but effective and a solid option for podcasting.

Logitech Premium Headset - $20.00 Logitech Desktop Microphone - $16.00

Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB Headset - $35.00 iPod Recording

• If you have an iPod, there are several options to use your iPod as an audio podcast recorder.

Griffin iTalk (mic input) - $10.00 - $30.00

XtremeMac IPV-MIC-20 MicroMemo (mic input) - $18 - $30 Belkin F8Z082 TuneTalk - $50.00 - $80.00 Audio Recording Software

• Audacity is a free, open-source multi-track audio editor and recorder that is widely used by podcasters. It includes a number of useful features and plug-ins, and has an interface that is intuitive and easy to use. It’s available for Windows, Mac, and at: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

• QuickTime Pro 7 is a $29.99 upgrade from the free QuickTime player and it can create audio as well as video podcasts. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/ Audio Podcast with QuickTime Pro 7

• You can create a audio podcast with QuickTime Pro 7 in just six steps.

• However, Windows XP and Vista based computers all have a free program for creating digital video called Windows Movie Maker.

• Movie Maker 2 allows you to capture video and audio as well as having the ability to edit the video right after it is captured. Windows Digital Video Software

• TechSmith’s Camtasia Studio 5 also allows for video podcasting but is a bit more difficult to use and is not free at $175.00 for a single- user license. (Academic Price)

• In addition, some Web cameras have a built in microphone, while others do not. If your Web camera does not have a built–in microphone, you will need a separate microphone to capture sound. Plug it into the jack (often labeled Mic) on your computer or sound card.

• If you do not have a microphone and your Web camera does not have one built in, you will not be able to record sound without another audio recording device, such as a camcorder. Video Podcasting Camera Set-Up

• Yes. A podcast is online audio and/or video content that is delivered via an RSS feed. The audio or video file that makes the feed a podcast rather than a standard RSS feed is contained in the 'enclosure' . The easiest way to think of the audio or video file as similar to an e-mail attachment.

• Instead of reading content in your RSS feed reader, you can listen to the contents of your feed using a reader or aggregator that supports podcasts, or you can listen to them on an iPod or similar device once the feed is synced to your device.

• If you don’t use iTunes U to deliver your podcasts – audio or video – then you must create what is called an RSS Feed with an enclosure which then makes the RSS Feed into a podcast. What is RSS?

• RSS (Real Simple Syndication) is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Many news-related sites, blogs and other online publishers syndicate their content as an RSS Feed to whoever wants it.

• Once you subscribe to a feed, it gets sent to your feed reader as soon as it is sent by the website.
