NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 NIELSEN MUSIC YEAR-END REPORT CANADA 2016 Copyright © 2017 The Nielsen Company 1 Welcome to the annual Nielsen Music Year End Report for Canada, providing the definitive 2016 figures and charts for the music industry. And what a year it was! The year had barely begun when we were already saying goodbye to musical heroes gone far too soon. David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Glenn Frey, Leon Russell, Maurice White, Prince, George Michael ... the list goes on. And yet, despite the sadness of these losses, there is much for the industry to celebrate. Music consumption is at an all-time high. Overall consumption of album sales, song sales and audio on-demand streaming volume is up 5% over 2015, fueled by an incredible 203% increase in on-demand audio streams, enough to offset declines in sales and return a positive year for the business. 2016 also marked the highest vinyl sales total to date. It was an incredible year for Canadian artists, at home and abroad. Eight different Canadian artists had #1 albums in 2016, led by Drake whose album Views was the biggest album of the year in Canada as well as the U.S. The Tragically Hip had two albums reach the top of the chart as well, their latest release and their 2005 best of album, and their emotional farewell concert in August was something we’ll remember for a long time. Justin Bieber, Billy Talent, Céline Dion, Shawn Mendes, Leonard Cohen and The Weeknd also spent time at #1. Break out artist Alessia Cara as well as accomplished superstar Michael Buble also enjoyed successes this year. -

I first met Nick Drake when I arrived in London after attending the Isle of Wight Pop Festival in 1969, which featured as its curtain-closer a very different Bob Dylan to the one I had seen in Sydney in March 1966. However, on thinking about it, Dylan’s more scaled down eclectic country music approach - which he revealed for the first time - kind of prepared me for what I was about to experience in London. The day after I arrived at my temporary London lodgings with friends living in Warwick Avenue, I went to Les Cousins in Greek Street. -

2016 NIELSEN MUSIC U.S. MID-YEAR REPORT 2016 NIELSEN MUSIC MID-YEAR U.S. REPORT Copyright © 2016 The Nielsen Company 1 2016 MID-YEAR HIGHLIGHTS AND ANALYSIS Nielsen, the music industry’s leading data information provider presents the 2016 U.S. Music mid-year report for the 6-month period of January 1, 2016 through June 30, 2016. • Audio has surpassed Video as the leading Streaming format in 2016. Audio share of streaming is 54% in 2016, growing from 44% through the first six months of 2015. • There are 3 albums that have sold over 1 Million units so far this year (Adele/25, Drake/Views and Beyonce/Lemonade), while there was only 1 at this time last year (Taylor Swift/1989). • Creative release strategies, driven mostly by digital formats, continue to be a major story. Drake’s “Views”, Beyonce’s “Lemonade” and Kanye Wests “The Life of Pablo” have all been successful this year and are led by digital formats. Also, 2016 saw the first album to chart based solely on streaming activity, when Chance the Rapper debuted at #8 in its first week with 57M audio streams. • Digital purchasing has seen the largest decline of all formats with Digital tracks down 24% and digital albums down 18%. Total digital purchasing (Albums + Track Equivalents) is down 21% vs. the first half of 2015. However, factoring in the gains in streaming and total digital consumption is up 15%. • Vinyl continues to become a bigger piece of the physical music business. Vinyl LPs now comprise nearly 12% of the physical business in the first half of 2016, which far surpasses last year’s record pace of 9%. -

797 Chapter 23 Hunter-Gatherer Families and Parenting Coren L. Apicella and Alyssa N. Crittenden Our species is characterized by remarkable biological success. In the past 10,000 years, since the advent of agriculture, our population has increased over 1,000-fold (Coale, 1974; Westing, 2013). We have successfully populated all reaches of the planet, calling the most extreme of habitats, home. This remarkable success is largely a consequence of our extraordinary ability to cooperate with one another. While cooperation is observed in many other species, human cooperation is anomalous in both scale and nature. Humans are unique in that they form long-lasting, nonreproductive ties with genetically unrelated individuals. Social learning in humans further accentuates the utility of cooperative ties by allowing adaptive information to accrue over many generations (Boyd & Richerson, 2009). It was these cognitive and social processes that enabled us to adapt to a wide-range of environments and ultimately led to our unsurpassed success (Tennie, Call, & Tomasello, 2009). Possibly the biggest challenge faced by our Pleistocene ancestors, who lived roughly 2.5 million years ago until the advent of agriculture, was how to raise energetically expensive, big-brained children in unpredictable and changing climates. The solution to this problem was to extend cooperation beyond the pair bond and nuclear families (Emlen, 1995; Hill & Hurtado, 2009; Hrdy, 1999). Athens Campus Athens Campus Introduction The University of Georgia is centered around the town of Athens, located approximately 60 miles northeast of the capital of Atlanta, Georgia. The University was incorporated by an act of the General Assembly on January 25, 1785, as the first state-chartered and supported college in the United States. The campus began to take physical form after a 633-acre parcel of land was donated for this purpose in 1801. The university’s first building—Franklin College, now Old College—was completed in 1806. Initially a liberal-arts focused college, University of Georgia remained modest in size and grew slowly during the Figure 48. Emblem of the antebellum years of the nineteenth century. In 1862, passage of the Morrill Act University of Georgia. by Congress would eventually lead to dramatic changes in the focus, curriculum, and educational opportunities afforded at the University of Georgia. The Morrill Act authorized the establishment of a system of land grant colleges, which supported, among other initiatives, agricultural education within the United States. The University of Georgia began to receive federal funds as a land grant college in 1872 and to offer instruction in agriculture and mechanical arts. The role of agricultural education and research has continued to grow ever since, and is now supported by experiment stations, 4-H centers, and marine institutes located throughout the state. The Athens campus forms the heart of the University of Georgia’s educational program. The university is composed of seventeen colleges and schools, some of which include auxiliary divisions that offer teaching, research, and service activities. -

The issue of open access, in general, of which this consultation is a significant part is of critical importance to the future development of scholarly communication and we believe it is essential to consult as widely as possible before preparing any legislation. Introduction The Royal Society is the UK’s national academy of science and has been publishing scientific journals since 1665 when Philosophical Transactions was founded. Philosophical Transactions effectively invented the system of peer review which is now standard practice for all high quality journals. It is now published biweekly and is the world's longest running scientific journal. (Source: University of Georgia) The history of the University of Georgia (UGA) generally parallels that of the State of Georgia itself. Georgia became the fourth state of the United States after voting to ratify the Constitution on January 2, 1788. Statehood closely followed the Georgia General Assembly’s establishment of UGA in 1785, the first chartered state university in the nation. After approval of the charter, the legislature appointed governing boards and a president, Abraham Baldwin. It would take sixteen years to navigate the challenges associated with securing support, funding, and a location for the new school before students could be admitted in 1801.9 For much of its history, UGA has supported the evolving 9.
