Biodiversity: Nature Conservation in the Greening of Singapore - In a small city-state where land is considered a scarce resource, the tension between urban development and biodiversity conservation, which often involves protecting areas of forest from being cleared for development, has always been present. In the years immediately after independence, the Singapore government was more focused on bread-and-butter issues. Biodiversity conservation was generally not high on its list of priorities. More recently, however, the issue of biodiversity conservation has become more prominent in Singapore, both for the government and its citizens. This has predominantly been influenced by regional and international events and trends which have increasingly emphasised the need for countries to show that they are being responsible global citizens in the area of environmental protection. This study documents the evolution of Singapore’s biodiversity conservation efforts and the on-going paradigm shifts in biodiversity conservation as Singapore moves from a Garden City to a City in a Garden. The Singapore Urban Systems Studies Booklet Series draws on original Urban Systems Studies research by the Centre for Liveable Cities, Singapore (CLC) into Singapore’s development over the last half-century. The series is organised around domains such as water, transport, housing, planning, industry and the environment. Developed in close collaboration with relevant government agencies and drawing on exclusive interviews with pioneer leaders, these practitioner-centric booklets present a succinct overview and key principles of Singapore’s development model. Important events, policies, institutions, and laws are also summarised in concise annexes. The booklets are used as course material in CLC’s Leaders in Urban Governance Programme.

MEDIA FACTSHEET C Factsheet on Biodiversity Week The United Nations has designated 22 May as the International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. Based on the overall IBD theme of sustainable tourism, NParks has developed a local theme, “Encountering and Exploring Singapore’s Biodiversity”, to encourage the community to not only explore and embrace our rich biodiversity, but also take ownership of our shared natural heritage by caring for our flora and fauna. The theme has two key objectives: To encourage people in Singapore to take notice of the urban biodiversity around them To take specific actions to care for our flora and fauna, so that everyone can enjoy our parks and nature areas for a long time to come To commemorate IBD, NParks has organised a suite of events and activities during Biodiversity Week (20 to 28 May) to encourage the community to explore and encounter nature in Singapore. These programmes are taking place in schools, and our parks, gardens and nature areas, and involves 330 partners from schools, research institutions, and nature- interest groups. Press Release Official Opening of the Istana Heritage Gallery President

Press Release Official Opening of the Istana Heritage Gallery President Tony Tan Keng Yam officially opened the Istana Heritage Gallery on Friday, 7 October 2016. Located at the Istana Park along Orchard Road and opposite the Istana, the Istana Heritage Gallery offers visitors the opportunity to understand the history and heritage of the Istana. 2 Gazetted in 1992 as a National Monument along with Sri Temasek (formerly the Colonial Secretary’s house), the Istana mirrors the growth and development of Singapore from a colony to sovereign state. The Gallery explores the role and significance of the Istana, and captures the Istana’s transition from being the Colonial Governor’s House to its current role as the official Residence of the President. It also seeks to provide visitors with a glimpse into the Istana’s rich history through a specially curated range of heritage displays including state artefacts, artwork and state gifts received from foreign dignitaries by our past and present Presidents and Prime Ministers. 3 The state gifts are a highlight of the Gallery as this is the first time they are placed on permanent display for visitors to enjoy. They are lasting testimonies of Singapore’s friendship with other countries. The current display of 18 state gifts includes: A silver cigarette box, which is one of the earliest recorded gifts in the Istana’s collection. This was presented by His Excellency Raja Tun Uda Al-Haj bin Raja Muhammad, Governor of Penang, to Yang di-Pertuan Negara Encik Yusof bin Ishak in 1961; A bronze bust of an Induna, presented to President Ong Teng Cheong by His Excellency Nelson Mandela, President of the Republic of the South Africa, during his first state visit to Singapore in 1997; A pair of silver goblets which bears Singapore’s Coat of Arms and the Royal Cypher of Queen Elizabeth II – symbolising the longstanding friendship between these two countries.

    Embargoed Till 4.30Pm, 13 February 2020

MEDIA RELEASE Embargoed till 4.30pm, 13 February 2020 Plans for a green connection from Orchard to Singapore River unveiled - Month-long public exhibition at The URA Centre to showcase plans - Proposed enhancements to Istana Park - Enhanced accessibility to Fort Canning Centre - Better connectivity to Singapore River from Fort Canning Park Singapore, 13 February 2020 – The National Parks Board (NParks) and Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) today unveiled plans to enhance our green spaces in the city. As part of ongoing plans to enhance Orchard Road as a lifestyle destination and to ‘Bring Back the Orchard’, Singapore’s signature street is envisioned to be transformed into a lush green corridor by introducing new green spaces and lush planting. It will form part of a 6km-long green connection linking key historic green and blue spaces in our city centre – Singapore Botanic Gardens, Istana, Fort Canning Park and Singapore River. These proposed plans follow the public exhibition and consultation exercise in 2019 on the plans for Orchard Road. More than 1,500 members of the public had shared their feedback with many suggestions calling for more green spaces and family-friendly facilities along Orchard Road. The current 1.3ha Istana Park will be redesigned to combine with the existing Dhoby Ghaut Green and Penang Road Open Space to create a larger green space complete with a new nature playgarden on Orchard Road. There will be new connections from Istana Park to Fort Canning Park via an upcoming linkway at 9 Penang Road (former Park Mall) and proposed sheltered escalators leading from the pedestrian underpass at Canning Rise to Fort Canning Centre at the hilltop.

MEDIA RELEASE for Immediate Release Nparks Announces That

MEDIA RELEASE For Immediate Release NParks announces that over 500 species have been discovered or rediscovered locally over the past five years 48 new targets have been added to the species recovery programme 27 May 2017 – The National Parks Board (NParks) announced that over 500 species have been discovered and rediscovered over the past five years in Singapore by NParks staff, research partners and naturalists. These species include both marine and terrestrial animals, plants including orchids, and insects. These discoveries were made during in-depth surveys, such as the Comprehensive Marine Biodiversity Survey, the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve survey, as well as concerted efforts to survey Singapore’s nature reserves and nature areas in the past five years. The list of discoveries and rediscoveries includes a bee species that is potentially new to science, and a very rare orchid. A small carpenter bee of the genus Ceratina that is potentially new to science was found by chance in 2014 while NParks staff were studying a clump of flowering Tiger Orchids. In 2016, a clump of the Acriopsis ridleyi growing on a tall tree in Bukit Timah Nature Reserve was collected. When it flowered, the Singapore Botanic Gardens herbarium verified that it was a species of orchid thought extinct for over 100 years. More details about the discoveries and rediscoveries can be found in Factsheet A. Despite Singapore being highly urbanised, the fact that we are able to discover and rediscover over 500 species in our city-state in the last five years shows that there is a lot more biodiversity in our City in a Garden that have yet to be discovered and studied.
