SEA to SUMMIT DIRECTORY Sea to Summit: an Australian Company Est SEA TO SUMMIT DIRECTORY Sea to Summit: An Australian company est. 1990 There’s history behind the name... In 1984 a small group of climbers from the world’s flattest continent pulled off an audacious ascent of Mount Everest - they put a new route up the north face in lightweight style with no oxygen or sherpa support. Six years later, one of the summiteers, Tim Macartney-Snape decided to return to Everest in an attempt to climb the mountain from sea level. The first ascent of Everest from sea to summit. Needing some custom made bags for this lightweight adventure,Tim turned to climbing friend and sewing enthusiast Roland Tyson, who was able to help. Tim’s solo ascent of Mt. Everest was named the “Sea to Summit” expedition. Back in Australia, Tim joined forces with Roland to build a business that could make use of their outdoor knowledge and those of like-minded enthusiasts like Matt and PJ to create truly ingenious, well-made but affordable outdoor equipment. They named their company Sea to Summit after Tim’s expedition and the business prospered providing innovative gear to a growing band of outdoor enthusiasts all over the world. Leave No Trace Sea to Summit is a proud founding sponsor of the Leave No Trace (Australia) initiative. The appeal of the LNT approach lies in this formation of partnerships with land custodians including councils, indigenous land managers and pastoralists as well as National Parks services. This includes many wild areas of Australia that are heavily used but poorly protected. All outdoor users including walkers, 4WD tourists and fishing enthusiasts are targeted. Research is also fundamental to the program. Information is made available in the forms of leaflets, signage and educational programs, both to the public and land managers, and is environment specific. A major aspect of the program is partnership with businesses in the outdoor industry. Sea To Summit actively design and manufacture product that incorporate and promote LNT principles. lnt.org.au National Packaging Covenant Carbon Conscious As an investment in Smarter Packaging, Less Waste, Cleaner our future Sea To Summit offsets the air travel for Environment. • Pack Like a Pro!
Pack Like a Pro! Packing clothes and accessories seems easy enough but these days there are so many tools to make packing even more efficient by saving space in your bag as well as organizing it so it doesn’t become a disaster going in and out of it. Warnings: Shorts are not always the best attire even during the summer season for the UK so check weather before you pack and remember their 50-60 is not the same as a hot state like Florida or country like Jamaica. Don’t be misled if you believe jeans are great to pack. They aren’t the best type of pants to take as they weigh more and are thicker than casual pants such as kaki or chino (cotton) pants. If it is a colder season, taking a pair of long johns/thermal underclothing and layer instead. You need lots of shoes to go with all your outfits? Absolutely NOT! You just need a good pair of walking/hiking shoes or boots and a nice pair of casual shoes (optional: formal if you have a formal engagement during your vacation) Walk-About in UK: A lot of the ground for walking in the UK the majority of time will be uneven pavement/sidewalks and grounds. If you have bad ankles, consider taking hiking boots. NOTE: Don’t pack them in the check-in bag but wear them on the plane. Once settled in your seat, take them off during the long flight and using slippers or sock booties. Then, pack one pair of nice/casual shoes in your check-in bag.

  • Evolution of Traditional Bags FRANSISCA WIDJAJA INTRODUCTION
Evolution of Traditional bags FRANSISCA WIDJAJA INTRODUCTION A bag or usually known regionally as a sack is a common tool in the form of a non-rigid container. The use of bags predates recorded history, with the earliest bags being no more than lengths of animal skin, cotton, or woven plant fibers, folded up at the edges and secured in that shape with strings of the same material. Despite their simplicity, bags have been fundamental for the development of human civilization, as they allow people to easily collect loose materials such as berries or food grains, and to transport more items than could readily be carried in the hands. The word probably has its origins in the Norse word baggi, from the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European bʰak, but is also comparable to the Welsh baich (load, bundle), and the Greek βάσταγμα (bástagma, load). Cheap disposable paper bags and plastic shopping bags are very common in the retail trade as a convenience for shoppers, and are often supplied by the shop for free or for a small fee. Customers may also take their own shopping bags to some shops. Although paper had been used for purposes of wrapping and padding in ancient China since the 2nd century BC, the first use of paper bags (for preserving the flavor of tea) in China came during the later Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD). ARHUACA MOCHILA This is a traditional Colomian bag called as Arhuaca knapsack in Englsih, or tutu iku in ika. Popular as a Colombian artisan bag made by Arhuaco people of the Sierra Nevada.

Course Equipment and Food Restoration Ecology in Greater Yellowstone The following equipment and food-planning lists are intended to help you pack for your upcoming course. It is important that you bring needed clothing, gear & food, yet do not bring too much, as space in your backpack and the trailer will be limited. WRFI supports sharp shopping and saving money. We do not expect you to spend any more than necessary. For example, a $.50 thrift store food bowl works just a good as a $50 titanium one. Some of your gear may be purchased at discount or used, but it all should be high quality. Much of this equipment can last you a lifetime of outdoor adventure. If unsure about which item to buy consider what will be most useful to you after the course, and consult with WRFI staff. Where to shop? Buying from local shops often provides the best service and supports your community. Some larger chain stores have greater selection and excellent return policies. Craigslist gives you access to a world of cheap used gear - but don’t let a good deal lead you into buying something that is worn out or does not fit well! Please bring a copy of this document with you as you pack or shop for gear. It is essential to your safety and comfort that you are well-equipped and supplied. Call or email your instructors or the WRFI office if you have any questions! Individual equipment supplied by WRFI WRFI travel mug Stuff sacks for dinner food Plastic bags for lining packs and stuff sacks Plastic bins (28”L x 19”W x 16”H) to store extra student food and equipment in the trailer Clean WRFI t-shirt at course end!
