Community Outreach

As a school, we are teaching our students to give back and contribute to their community—near and far.

During the month of October, our students have been participating in a few outreach projects.

The grade 6/7 class gave our students the opportunity to chew gum at school for a good cause. $112.00 was raised to help support the Crohn’s and Colitis

Foundation.

For the past 25 years, every October, Ontario School students have been bringing in pennies for The Great Penny Weigh-In. The money raised is sent to UNICEF (the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund). This year the 2/3 and 3 classes took on this project as their Community Outreach Project

The final weigh-in occurred on Halloween morning. As the classes assembled in the gym, the tension mounted as all the buckets were weighed. With a pizza and juice party on the line, each class waited anxiously as the totals were tallied. After all was said and done, our winners were the 2/3 class!! In total, the students brought in just over 175 kg of pennies. We will keep you posted on the total amount raised this year, once we have all those pennies counted. Thank you to everyone for your support, and to all those who emptied their piggy bank for this event. You can start saving for next year.

The Bicycle Factory has teamed with Canada to raise funds to build 5000 bicycles for school children in Ghana. As we all know, bicycles are great for your health and for the environment, but in places like Africa they are a valuable mode of transportation. A bike gives people access to health care, school and other vital life services. The factory puts out single gear cycles with coaster brakes and a sturdy rack

and basket on the strongest frame available. Each one comes with a lock and a basic repair kit, allowing owners to make basic repairs independently, if needed. The bikes + are specially designed to hold up to life in Ghana and suit the needs of the Ghanians. How does it work? The bikes are being "built" online at thebicyclefactory.ca. With every Cadbury UPC code entered, a bicycle part is virtually created and added to the bike in progress. Each of the 5,000 bicycles is made up of 100 parts—which means a total of 50,000 UPC codes.

In Canada, Cadbury is the country's second largest confectionery company and the brand portfolio includes some of Canada's best-loved chocolate, candy, cough and gum brands such as Dairy Milk(i), Caramilk(i), Mr. Big(i), (i), (i), (i), = Bubblicious(i), (i), and (i), (Cadbury Thins(i)), (Dentyne(i)) and (Trident Splash(i)).

HOW CAN YOU HELP OUT? If you are purchasing any of the above Cadbury Products, please save the UPC code and send it to school with your child. We will keep you posted throughout the year on our bicycle building progress. Please think of us while you are shopping for Halloween treats for the kids this year and don’t forget to send in the UPC codes.
