It plays an intrinsic role in almost all segments of the people‟s cultural life. In the Ọjị Ezinihitte festivity the „kola tradition‟ is meaningfully and elaborately celebrated. This article examines the importance of Ọjị within the context of Ezinihitte socio-cultural heritage, and equally accounts for continuity and change within it. An eclectic framework in data collection was utilized for this research. This involved the use of key-informant interviews, direct observation as well as extant textual sources (both published and un-published), including archival documents, for the purposes of the study. In terms of analysis, the study utilized the qualitative analytical approach. This was employed towards ensuring that the three basic purposes of this study – exploration, description and explanation – are well articulated and attained. The paper provided background for a proper understanding of the „sacred origin‟ of the Ọjị festive celebration. Through a vivid account of the festival‟s processes and rituals, it achieved a reconstruction of the festivity‟s origins and evolutionary trajectories and argues the festival as reflecting the people‟s spirit of fraternity and conviviality. -

Miller* Research Fellow, African Studies Center, Boston University, USA The Abakua´ mutual-aid society of Cuba, recreated from the E´ kpe` leopard society of West Africa’s Cross River basin, is a richly detailed example of African cultural transmission to the Americas. Its material culture, such as masquerades and drum construction, as well as rhythmic structures, are largely based on E´ kpe` models. Its ritual language is expressed through hundreds of chants that identify source regions and historical events; many can be interpreted by speakers of E` f`k,ı the pre-colonial lingua franca of the Cross River region (Miller 2005). With the help of both E´ kpe` and Abakua´ leaders, I have examined relationships between the musical practices of West African E´ kpe`, Cuban Abakua´, as well as Cuban migrants to the United States whose commercial recordings have evoked West African places and events historically relevant to Abakua´, meanwhile contribut- ing to the evolution of North American jazz. Anaang is a developing language spoken by the Anaang people in Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria. Genetically, Anaang is a Lower Cross Language of the Benue-Congo sub-family of the Niger-Congo Language Phylum. The objectives of the study are to investigate the articulatory features of Anaang and how palatalisation is formed in the language. The population is made of sixteen informants, two from each of the eight local government areas in Anaang speaking areas. Collection of data is based on interviews, participant observation and personal interaction with the informants. In achieving this, fifty items were used from SIL Comparative African Wordlists. Interviews were both formally and informally recorded in a digital midget. Formally, the recordings were done on the knowledge of the informants who were asked to pronounce words in Anaang. Informally, data were recorded unknowingly to the informants in social gatherings. Articulatory Model by Browman & Goldstein (1990) is adopted as the theoretical frame for the analysis. The theory recognizes gestures as abstract, discreet and dynamically defined units which are invariant, but overlap in time due to their internal spatio-temporal organisation. -

ABSTRACT This paper takes a critical look at the cultural values of Nsibidi and its related writings. It perceives Nsibidi as an Ekpe tool for socio-cultural communication amongst the practitioners of the Elge society. The culture of Nsibidi is practiced in Nigeria, Africa and beyond. The paper has some recommendation and conclusion. Keywords: Cultural values, Nsibidi, Nigeria INTRODUCTION Culture is a belief system of the total way of life of a person, group of people or society. However, culture is viewed differently by scholars yet, its basic tenets are the same. Anthropologists see culture as all the features of man’s social life which he did not acquire biologically. Writers like [1], [2], [3] have viewed culture as a complete whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of the society. Because acquired but not in born. Most at times what human beings do affect them either negatively or positively. It described the religion, social, economic and political structures of the society as progressive and dynamic. But, Ekpe in the course of the colonial period underwent a wide range of fundamental changes in their structure, roles, status and activities. The attitude of colonial agencies, the tenets of colonial enterprise – Christianity, Western education and commerce and the pursuit of these tenets as well as some activities of the societies themselves, conduced inevitably to a series of measures adopted by colonial authorities to suppress the societies in question. The acts of suppression altered the pattern of relationship of these societies to their communities and people by altering (diminishing) their roles, status and activities. The aim of this paper is to examine the role and activities of this society, its confrontation with colonial authorities as well as its contemporary standing. Essentially, this is an examination of the themes of change and continuity. -

However, observations regarding the impact of such acephalous societies on the political thought of the African Diaspora remain obscure. The organizational techniques of such societies are best described as a form of kinship-based anarchism. This study seeks to examine the persistence of such organizational techniques among African-descended populations in the United States. Abstract: Religious tourism is as old as religion itself and consequently, it is the oldest form of tourism in the world. Most religions have holy places that people visit from time to time for several reasons. This work examines the Ababa carnival which involves faith- activities, but in a heightened form. It involves pilgrimages to the Ababa holy shrine in Esin Ufot Eyo-Abasi in Oron. This work identifies as a problem, the lack of basic infrastructures and non-patriotic and neglecting attitudes of Nigerians towards their indigenous religious tourism development, as they are so much involved in faith-based activities and travels to Israel, Mecca, Rome among several others. It adopts the Phenomenological method in a Culture Area of Oron. As primary research, it will rely on oral interviews and secondary materials from the libraries and the internet. The findings indicate that the positive effects of indigenous faith-based religious tourism such as Ababa are yet to be used in developing Oron and Nigeria as found in other parts of the world such as Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Italy. This work concludes that traditional religious tourism can be used as a tool for National Development and unity of Nigeria. -

RJHIS 5 (1) 2018 The Ibibio Peace Praxis: A Discourse in African Indigenous Peace Ethos Emah Saviour Peter* Abstract: This study is an analysis of the indigenous system of peace building, peacemaking, peace enforcement and peacekeeping among the Ibibio people of Southern Nigeria, before the permeation of Western peace praxes into the study area. Data obtained for the study was collated from both primary and secondary sources; including interviews, focus group discussions and analysis of extant literatures on the Ibibio peace practices. The findings from the study reveal that the Ibibio had instituted several sources, symbolisms, instruments, agents and institutions of sustainable peacebuilding and conflict resolution prior to Western permeation of traditional Ibibio society. In addition, they had also understood and appreciated, though in different vernacular, the various peace conceptions that we recognize today – negative and positive peace, structural peace, active peace, inner peace, etc. For the most part, this indigenous pax Ibibio helped in the sustenance of peace and order in society and steady but effective resolution whenever conflict arose. The paper, therefore, derived from the Ibibio case study that indigenous peace practices in Africa have historically proven effective and that they still possess the efficacy of balancing the deficit of mainstream Western approaches in Africa today. Hence, the paper advocates a paradigm shift from peacebuilding approaches in Africa centered on Western-techniques to more indigenous approaches. This does not necessitate a total neglect of the Western methods, but a kind of hybrid formula where indigenous approaches to peacebuilding in Africa are balanced with the Western approaches and tailored according to changing circumstances for effective peacebuilding in the continent.
