Still Crazy: An Unsung Homage to the New Testament Abstract This article argues that the British rock-and-roll comedy Still Crazy (1998) is based on the New Testament similarly to the way that Clueless is related to Jane Austen's Emma, or The Legend of Bagger Vance is related to the Bhagavad Gita. A detailed comparison of the characters, settings and incidents (as well as explicit references) in the film ot elements in the New Testament and related Christian traditions is offered to support this thesis. Thus, Still Crazy is of interest to scholars of religion and film, and is particularly useful for teaching purposes. The Commitments 90% (1991) liked it Average Rating: 3.7/5 User Ratings: 28,143 Movie Info "The Irish are the blacks of Europe, Dubliners are the blacks of Ireland, and the North Siders are the blacks of Dublin ... so say it loud -- I'm black and I'm proud!" Or so Jimmy Rabbitte (Robert Arkins) tells his slightly puzzled friends as he tries to assemble a rhythm & blues show band in a working class community in Dublin in Alan Parker's film The Commitments. Jimmy is a would-be music business wheeler and dealer, and he's decided what Dublin needs is a top- shelf soul band. However, top-shelf soul musicians are hard to find in Dublin, so he has to make do with what he can find. However, after a long round of auditions, Jimmy makes two inspired discoveries: Deco (Andrew Strong), an abrasive and alcoholic streetcar conductor who nevertheless has a voice like the risen Theatrical release poster (Wikipedia) ghost of Otis Redding, and Joey "The Lips" Fagan (Johnny Murphy), a horn player who TOMATOMETER knows soul music backwards and forwards and claims to have played with everyone from All critics Wilson Pickett to Elvis Presley. Before long, the band -- called the Commitments -- is packing them in at local clubs. But do they have what it takes to make the big time? Based on the novel 88% by Roddy Doyle, who also co-wrote the Average Rating: 7.5/10 screenplay, The Commitments is sparked by Reviews Counted: 42 fine performances by its young cast and Fresh: 37 enthusiastic performances of a number of '60s Rotten: 5 soul classics; the cast, who play their own instruments, reassembled the band for a concert Top critics tour after the film became a hit.

  • Forster fi Rst Encountered Billy Budd in 1926
. M. Forster fi rst encountered Billy Budd in 1926. Some twenty years later, he E embarked on a collaboration with Benjamin Britten and Eric Crozier, adapting Melville’s novella for the opera stage. The libretto they produced poignantly reaffi rms the Forsterian creed of salvation through personal relationships. This study presents an extensive exploration of Forster’s involvement in the interpre- Hanna Rochlitz tation, transformation and re-creation of Melville’s text. It situates the story of the Handsome Sailor in the wider context of Forster’s literary oeuvre, his life, and his life writings. In detailed readings, Billy Budd becomes a lens through which the themes, Sea-changes: patterns and leitmotifs of Forsterian thought and creative imagination are brought into focus. A close re-examination of the libretto sketches serves to shed new light on the Melville - Forster - Britten collaborative process in which Melville’s story was changed to fi t an archetypal array of plot and character types that is central to Forster’s own storytelling.
