(Sheridan 25) n this brief exchange in act 2, scene 1 of Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s IThe Rivals (1775), Jack Absolute reveals the hidden and true rival to his courtship of the novel-besotted Lydia Languish: himself. In a play which pits him against two rivals for Lydia’s affections—Bob Acres and Sir Lucius O’Trigger—it becomes apparent that the only serious contender is his own entirely fictional creation, Ensign Beverley, the dashing impoverished sol- dier persona he has adopted to win her heart with the promise of adventure and elopement by comparison with dull approved marriage to a worthy young heir promoted by Lydia’s aunt and Jack’s father. The dangerous influence of the novel leads his wayward beloved to put at risk the union he plans, but Jack counteracts Lydia’s devotion to novelistic plotting by deploying the intrigue techniques of the modern drama; he maintains his part as Beverley to Lydia and his other role as Ab- solute to his father and her aunt. -

FROM THE RHETORIC OF LONGINUS TO THE POETICS OF JOHN DENNIS THE ROLE OF TERROR IN THE THEORIES OF THE SUBLIME IN THE 18TH CENTURY ZOLTÁN CORA Within the huge literary and artistic tradition of the sublime in Western culture, map- ping, analysing and interpreting the relations of literary and visual sublime is a highly complex issue.1 The affective qualities within the sublime are usually connected to the aesthetic categories of greatness, infinity and terror as well as to philosophical con- cepts of the transcendental. This paper endeavours to interpret the sublime as a possi- ble aesthetic form of an ontological insight that is not gained through conventional syllogisms.2 Additionally, the paper also investigates the role of terror in the rhetorical 1 I will dwell on art theory and art history only where it seems necessary for the coherence of the ar- gumentation, and due to the limits of this study, this restriction will be applied to the theological impli- cations of the sublime as well. 2 Though this statement has been pre-eminently valid since the Kantian discussion of the sublime, still with regard to classical philosophy, it is plausible to argue for a similar meaning already in Greek philosophy, especially Neoplatonism and the tradition of Hermes Trismegistos, and thereby Alexandrian Hermetism. JOHN DRYDEN AND THE LATE 17TH CENTURY DRAMATIC EXPERIENCE LECTURE 16 (C) BY ASHER ASHKAR GOHAR 1 CREDIT HR. JOHN DRYDEN (1631 – 1700) HIS LIFE: John Dryden was an English poet, literary critic, translator, and playwright who was made England's first Poet Laureate in 1668. He is seen as dominating the literary life of Restoration England to such a point that the period came to be known in literary circles as the “Age of Dryden”. The son of a country gentleman, Dryden grew up in the country. When he was 11 years old the Civil War broke out. Both his father’s and mother’s families sided with Parliament against the king, but Dryden’s own sympathies in his youth are unknown. About 1644 Dryden was admitted to Westminster School, where he received a predominantly classical education under the celebrated Richard Busby. His easy and lifelong familiarity with classical literature begun at Westminster later resulted in idiomatic English translations. In 1650 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took his B.A. degree in 1654. What Dryden did between leaving the university in 1654 and the Restoration of Charles II in 1660 is not known with certainty. In 1659 his contribution to a memorial volume for Oliver Cromwell marked him as a poet worth watching. His “heroic stanzas” were mature, considered, sonorous, and sprinkled with those classical and scientific allusions that characterized his later verse. This kind of public poetry was always one of the things Dryden did best. On December 1, 1663, he married Elizabeth Howard, the youngest daughter of Thomas Howard, 1st earl of Berkshire. -

Roberts Professor George Haggerty, UC Riverside Professor Kevis Goodman Fall 2013 Virtue Rewarded: Handel’s Oratorios and the Culture of Sentiment Copyright 2013 by Jonathan Rhodes Lee ABSTRACT Virtue Rewarded: Handel’s Oratorios and the Culture of Sentiment by Jonathan Rhodes Lee Doctor of Philosophy in Music University of California, Berkeley Professor Davitt Moroney, Chair Throughout the 1740s and early 1750s, Handel produced a dozen dramatic oratorios. These works and the people involved in their creation were part of a widespread culture of sentiment. This term encompasses the philosophers who praised an innate “moral sense,” the novelists who aimed to train morality by reducing audiences to tears, and the playwrights who sought (as Colley Cibber put it) to promote “the Interest and Honour of Virtue.” The oratorio, with its English libretti, moralizing lessons, and music that exerted profound effects on the sensibility of the British public, was the ideal vehicle for writers of sentimental persuasions. My dissertation explores how the pervasive sentimentalism in England, reaching first maturity right when Handel committed himself to the oratorio, influenced his last masterpieces as much as it did other artistic products of the mid- eighteenth century. When searching for relationships between music and sentimentalism, historians have logically started with literary influences, from direct transferences, such as operatic settings of Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, to indirect ones, such as the model that the Pamela character served for the Ninas, Cecchinas, and other garden girls of late eighteenth-century opera. -

Her research interests include early modern women, Shakespeare, and vagrancy. She is the author of numerous essays on these subjects, which have appeared in essay collections and in journals like Shakespeare Quarterly, Studies in English Literature, and Early Modern Women. Her book Early Modern Women’s Writing: Domesticity, Privacy, and the Public Sphere in England and the Low Countries has been pub- lished by Palgrave Macmillan (2017). Abstract This essay explores the first appearance of actresses on the public stage in England and the Dutch Republic. It considers the cultural climate, the theaters, and the plays selected for these early performances, particularly from the perspective of public femininity. In both countries antitheatricalists denounced female acting as a form of prostitution and evidence of inner corruption. In England, theaters were commercial institutions with intimate spaces that capitalized on the staging of privacy as theatrical. By contrast, the Schouwburg, the only public playhouse in Amsterdam, was an institu- tion with a more civic character, in which the actress could be treated as unequivocally a public figure. I explain these differences in the light of changing conceptions of public and private and suggest that the treatment of the actress shows a stronger pub- lic-private division in the Dutch Republic than in England. -

The butterfly to me is a symbol of hope and new beginnings. It is a subject that everyone can relate to, and everyone has seen a butterfly. Showing the cycle of the monarch butterfly tells of the changes in life which also occur with FOP. I picked the detailed work of a butterfly in watercolor to show what can be done after my adapting to FOP. I was a right handed painter until two years ago when my right elbow locked, forcing me to now do most of my painting with my left hand. This painting was the first time I had painted an open-winged monarch butterfly using my left hand. I consider this one of the more difficult butterflies to paint. Through my artwork, I also want to show with my painting that people with FOP can have productive lives. It’s important to have a special interest such as painting is to me. Jack B. No extended investigation concerning the life or the literary activity of Cibber has recently appeared, and certain misconceptions concerning his personal character, as well as his importance in the development of English literature and the literary merit of his plays, have been becoming more and more firmly fixed in the minds of students. Cibber was neither so much of a fool nor so great a knave as is generally supposed. The estimate and the judgment of two of his contemporaries, Pope and Dennis, have been far too widely accepted. The only one of the above topics that this paper deals with, otherwise than incidentally, is his place in the development of a literary mode. While Cibber was the most prominent and influential of the innovators among the writers of comedy of his time, he was not the only one who indicated the change toward sentimental comedy in his work. This subject, too, needs fuller investigation. I hope, at some future time, to continue my studies in this field. This work was suggested as a subject for a doctor's thesis, by Professor John Matthews Manly, while I was a graduate student at the University of Chicago a number of years ago, and was con• tinued later under the direction of Professor Thomas Marc Par- rott at Princeton. -

Osric: Waterfly, Lapwing, Chough, and Claudius’s Final Instrument Osric is a late-entering character, like the Gravediggers and Fortinbras, but like the latter, he is crucial to the play’s finale. He does not show his face until most of the king’s tools—the meddlesome Polonius as well as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern— have found out that “to be too busy is some danger.” Osric’s entry takes audiences by surprise, and it is only after a good deal of distractingly amusing repartee with Hamlet that he mentions Laertes, the fencing match, or the king’s “wager.”1 But audiences know that Osric’s business is somehow connected with the mousetrap that the king and Laertes have elaborately fashioned for Hamlet, and they are acutely aware that it is Laertes himself, at his own request to be Claudius’s “instrument,” who will be physically wielding the instrument of premeditated murder. Osric, then, seems a shadow-Laertes, a figure with his own agenda of advancement who is also being used by Claudius to lure Hamlet into the final duel. Though a minor character, a mere court functionary satirized as the apotheosis of courtly decadence, Osric is the last and surely the most idiosyncratic and puzzling in a long line of those whom the king has used for his deadly purposes—and the only survivor. There are different emphases and opinions about details of Osric’s ostentatious “words, words, words” and of Shakespeare’s grander design in sending such an emissary from the king, but there is little critical disagreement about the basic character of Osric—his buffoonish sycophancy and its comic/satirical ramifications—as he makes his first appearance in 5.2. -
