2018 is set to be another exciting year for Bentley Primary School, with a host of activities planned including a trip to London where a number of our older pupils will be performing in this year’s Voice in a Million event, singing live at Wembley! We are ever so thrilled that we were able to secure places at this huge occasion and are already practising the songs ready for the big day in March. Keep an eye on the website for reports and photos. We’d like to say a massive thank you to all those families, as well as friends and local community members who came along to our Christmas Fayres; overall, a grand total of just over £700 was raised! Thank you all so much. Last term the children had a fab fun day focusing on the sport of lacrosse. Following on from the success and enjoyment of that day, Key Stage 2 children are taking part in a lacrosse club after school. Who knows, we may even find the next lacrosse champion! Parents will be taking part in a free grammar workshop in February, helping to explain how grammar is taught across the federation and how children can be supported at home. The English Leader, Mrs Robinson, will be holding the workshop and we look forward to welcoming lots of parents, carers and other family members to the event. Just to whet your appetite: What’s the difference between a cat and a comma? One has claws at the end of its paws and the other is a pause at the end of a clause. Some of the children have been learning to play the ukulele, drums or guitar. At the end of the term we were treated to performances both at school and other occasions and local events. We are so impressed with how far the children have come in their playing and look forward to more performances soon. Bentley needs you (and your tools!) – Calling all handy local residents; we have some tasks around school that we could really use some help with: ● The chicken houses are in need of some urgent repair ● A new storage shed is going to need a base built and the parts put together later in the spring (One of the dads has kindly agreed to head up a group for this one as it is a bigger project) If you can help with any of these, please, please do get in touch, your help will be greatly appreciated! If you have any questions about the schools or are a prospective parent and would like to arrange a time to visit, please do get in touch; Bentley - 01473 310253 or admin@bentley..sch.uk

Bentley Bugle – Feb 2018 / Mar 2018 Page 6 BENTLEY REFORMED BAPTIST CHURCH "...tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee..." Mark 5:19 All are welcome to join with us Wednesday at 7.30 pm – Prayer and Bible Study Sunday at 10.45 am and 3.00 pm – Worship Services Every 4th Sunday at 3.00 pm – Special Family Service Pause For Thought: Last year, I received something very peculiar in the mail. It was a postcard which had a lovely series of wedding picture on the front and a very sweet thank you note written on the back. The note explained that the happy couple had a wonderful wedding day and that they were grateful for the wedding present I had bought them. The strange thing was that I had no idea who the two people were in the photographs! Perhaps it was a clever piece of junk mail made by the company that printed the postcard? If so, it certainly caught my attention. However, whilst the message of thanks was lovely, it certainly was not personally for me. I thank God however that there is a message of love that we can be sure is intended for us. The Bible is God’s word to all mankind and the gospel is to be delivered to all. Here is a portion of it: "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved..." Acts 16:31. BENTLEY W.I. At the beginning of December we enjoyed a Christmas meal at The Kings Head Stutton, and the following week our group carol service at St Mary's Church . At the December meeting we welcomed back Jane Sago to demonstrate Christmas cooking. She made a selection of puff pastry bites, little mince pie cakes, crisp bread crudités and two dips. After the demonstration we all enjoyed sampling her cooking. The first meeting of the New Year we had a Hair demonstration from John Oliver Hairdressing group. Steve who is a partner in the business and two stylists gave a very interesting and informative presentation and three lucky ladies had a free haircut. Steve spoke about how the Hairdressing Group was started and the training academy that John Oliver started. We all enjoyed the evening. The next meetings will be:- February 14th. The Inner Workings of a Supermarket. M. Lloyd March 14th. Building Bury Cathedral Tower. Horry Parson This will be an open meeting at 7:30pm at Bentley Village Hall. All welcome. Please phone Sandra Ford 310072 for details. Diane Clover

Page 7 Bentley Bugle – Feb 2018 / Mar 2018 CONSTABLE COUNTRY MEDICAL PRACTICE PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG) UPDATE - FEBRUARY 2018 The Patient Participation Group meets on a regular monthly basis. All minutes are available on the Practice website (www.constablecountrymedicalpractice.co.uk) and there should be paper copies available in the waiting rooms. At our meetings we discuss items we receive from the Comment cards, and we thank you for filling those in. These are available in both waiting rooms. If you add your contact details we can get back to your directly. You can also contact us via email at [email protected] Programme of talks for 2018 We are currently planning a series of talks on a variety of health topics suggested at our previous talks on diabetes, heart problems and men’s health. If you have any other topics you would like to suggest please get in touch via either of the methods above. “Childhood Ailments” is the next planned talk. Patient Research Project We are currently working with the University of East Anglia to carry out research on patient views in the practice. Thanks in particular to Dr. Frank Wells, the Vice Chair of the PPG, for his determination to find a local university willing to take this on. Managing NHS pressures Pressure continues to increase on all NHS services as the age profile of the country increases. Receptionists in the practice have been on “Care Navigator” training, which helps them to direct patients to the most relevant clinician, as well as to local support services. So there may be times, for example, when they suggest you see a Nurse Practitioner, rather than a doctor. PPG “cluster” meetings We attend meetings with PPG groups from other practices to discuss what we’re all doing and to hear presentations from local organisations and the East Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group. At a recent meeting representatives from One Life Suffolk spoke about the importance of improving patients’ lifestyles, concentrating on regular exercise, stopping smoking and reducing weight. This could be the subject of a future talk organised by the PPG. Your views welcome. Patient Transport Capel St Mary, East Bergholt and surrounding villages Unfortunately the patient transport scheme has had to be suspended until all volunteers have completed a “DBS” check. This is a routine check which has to be done for a variety of jobs where people have one to one contact with the public, including children. It checks whether someone has a criminal record, for example. Taxi drivers have to go through this and, although our drivers are volunteers, it’s been thought best that they undergo this screening. Capel surgery refurbishment The refurbishment of the Capel surgery will be starting soon, so please bear with it while improvements are made. Toys return to the waiting rooms After a long period of discussion we at last have agreement that toys will be available in the waiting rooms. They will be regularly cleaned to avoid infection risk. Kathy Pollard - Chair Constable Country Patient Participation Group

Bentley Bugle – Feb 2018 / Mar 2018 Page 8 NOTES FROM THE CASE Suffolk’s first Co-operative Pub! Tel. 01473 805575 www.thecasepubbentley.co.uk Fun and Games at the Case! Saturday 10th February New for 2018 – Games Evenings. Come and join a team to play some good old-fashioned board games with like-minded friends and neighbours and perhaps make new friends. Make an occasion of it by booking for a set meal at the special price of £6.50. Food served 6.30 - 7.30 pm, games start at 8.00pm. If there’s enough demand, we plan to make this a regular mid-monthly event. See you there! Our monthly quizzes continue on Saturday 24th February. Curry served as usual from 6 - 8pm. If you’d like to guest-host a quiz, tell one of our bar volunteers or drop an email to Chris at [email protected] and we’ll put you on the rota. The next Open Mic evening will be on Tuesday 6th February. All performers welcome. Bring your instrument, PA provided. You’ll get a warm welcome! New Year, new challenge! Our community pub depends heavily on volunteers to keep it running. If you love the pub and want to see it continue to be successful, would you consider joining our team? You don’t have to pull pints (though that is the most popular job) – you could wait at table, wash up, clean, provide support in the kitchen … No experience is necessary: most of us had none when we started. Let someone behind the bar know or leave a note at the pub with your name and email address or phone number. We’d love to hear from you. And if you’re a shareholder (there are over 200 of you out there) you might consider joining the Management Committee and having a say in how the pub is run. Please note: the kitchen will be closed from Wednesday 14th to Sunday 25th February inclusive, for staff holidays and some much–needed updating of kitchen equipment. The pub will be open as usual for drinks. We’re sorry for any inconvenience and hope to see you when we re-open as normal on Wednesday 28th. Gill Pink

LINK LUNCH Our Christmas lunch was a great success, when forty nine diners were served all the traditional Christmas fare followed by mince pies, tea/coffee and mints. At the January lunch we served forty three diners beef cobbler, mash potatoes, and Savoy cabbage’ followed by peaches and ice cream and a cup of tea or coffee. Recently we have been able to donate one hundred and fifty pounds to E.A.C.H. in memory of Jim & Eve Smith and one hundred and fifty pounds to the "Blossom" appeal breast cancer charity at Hospital. Our next lunch is on February 15th. Veronica Howe

Bentley’s village shop is pleased to say it’s ahead of the curve this month as Government announced that shops and service providers will no longer be allowed to charge customers for using a credit or debit card under a new law that has just come into effect. Bentley’s forward-thinking store has never had a minimum charge or charged any extra payment for shoppers using a credit card. The shop provides a fantastic service to the local community and is determined to keep costs down for all our customers. Contactless, debit and credit cards account for about 35% of everything sold in the shop. The management committee, led by Chairman Bob Feltwell, continues to support a team of volunteers who work tirelessly both as buyers and shop assistants. On average they serve 60 customers a day so it is no wonder the volunteers find it really interesting and satisfying to work in the shop as they meet so many people. Sales of locally sourced products continue to be the best sellers in the shop. Last year, the store’s first full year of trading, over 3,500 loaves of fresh bread from Capel Bakery were purchased from the shop along with 2,300 Capel Pies and over 16,000 free range eggs from Hoxne. Store cupboard essentials such as chilled and frozen foods, biscuits, cereals and preserves are always popular along with the daily essentials such as newspapers and milk. Our local Dry Cleaning and Laundry service is very popular, in Monday night back Wednesday afternoon ! Cementing its role as a significant community hub for the village, a new defibrillator has been installed on the side of the shop which can be accessed by dialling 999 and asking for the key code from the emergency services. The defibrillator has been donated under a British Heart Foundation scheme and will provide 24/7 support for those living in the village. See picture on back cover. With the retirement of our Treasurer at the end of December we would like to hear from anyone who would like to help us with accounting matters as we are sharing out the duties but can always do with extra expertise. If you haven’t used the shop before please do try to give it your support. We are open seven days a week from 8.30 until 5.30 weekdays and 8.30 until noon at weekends. There is ample parking - which is accessed via Case Lane. Email: [email protected], Tel 01473 310735

A BIG THANK YOU to everyone who gave us Christmas gifts for FIND (Families in Need) a local charity. Your generosity helped them give Christmas gifts to over 1,000 needy families. I would also like to thank those people who have left duvets, bedding and towels on the door step at 19 The Link. West Villa were extremely grateful for these gifts. Although they cannot take furniture they do accept donations of bedding, saucepans and small household items. So please think of them if you have any spare, they make a difference to those made homeless and I am more than happy to deliver such gifts to West Villa.

This year we would like to say an enormous thank you for all the ladies in the village who knitted sheep for us. Why sheep you ask? After consulting Bentley Primary School we decided to have two Posadas to go home with the children for the night. A Posada is a Mexican tradition where Mary and Joseph journey round a community stopping each night in a different home. So two of us knitted the crib figures, including baby Jesus, and they had a special box to be carried home each evening. Each child in the family was allowed to keep a sheep for looking after the Holy Family for the night. They also kept a diary of their adventures, which were wonderful, funny and charming. Hence the need for so many sheep and we ended up with about two hundred of all different breeds from Suffolk to Herdwick. They were enormously popular with the children at school as well as those who came to our Crib Service and Christmas Morning Service - even teenagers and mums wanted one! So very many thanks ladies it was well worth your efforts. Who knows, but perhaps next Christmas Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus and the sheep will be visiting other people in the village who would welcome them into their homes for a night!

Pause For Thought - This time of year it often seems cold and dark, and we feel that there is not much to look forward to. But if we pause and look around us we can see signs of the changing seasons and the hope of better weather. The snowdrops in the churchyard are just coming into bloom, a sure sign that Spring is just around the corner. The birds in the gardens seem hungry and quickly eat the food we give them, but have you noticed that they are singing too, another sign of the changing seasons. So let’s take time to look around at the small changes that are happening and look forward to sunshine and flowers and thank God for his goodness to us.

Bentley Bugle – Feb 2018 / Mar 2018 Page 14 BENTLEY WHIST DRIVES

Twenty two Whist Drives were held during 2017, with attendances slightly up on the previous year, which enabled us to donate two hundred and fifty pounds to the St. Elizabeth Hospice. In the twenty six years I have run the drives, over six thousand pounds has been donated to the Hospice. The drives are always held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays in the month at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall and everyone is always made welcome. Veronica Howe

PROFILE OF REGAN LLOYD - FREESTYLE SWIMMER My name is Regan Lloyd, I am 20 years old and I am a full time swimmer at Team Ipswich Swimming Club and I live in Bentley, Suffolk. I have been competing for 10 years now under the guidance of Team GB coach Dave Champion. I am a freestyler and my main events are the 200 and 400 metres freestyle where I’m currently sitting in the top 20 in the country for both. I am a double National medallist claiming a bronze in the 100 metres freestyle and a bronze in the 4x100 metre freestyle relay. I have managed to consecutively make nationals every year since 2008. I am currently Regional and County champion in multiple events such as the 100, 200, 400 and 1500 freestyle and have managed to retain the titles over the past years. I have taken the risk of dedicating everything to my swimming because I believe that with the support of my coach and my parents I can push for the top of my events in the Country, one day being able to represent my Country as a part of Team GB swimming, which as of now is within touching distance. I hope that with this extra support and funding it can allow me to go to much larger meets, preferably abroad, to race against some of the best in the world, as well as supporting me with necessary equipment for racing and training, all of which will boost my confidence and allow me to get the best out of my swimming in and out of the pool. I have had many achievements over the past 10 years with my swimming such as competing at the World Championship trials last year in Sheffield, as well as Olympic Trials the year before. Plus I’ve travelled to the Middle East where I trained in Oman for a week in preparation for an international meet in Dubai which was held in a World class arena. Most recently I competed at the ASA Winter Nationals where I swam my two main events, 200/400 freestyle, which I successfully managed to place myself in the top 15 in the country. These are a couple examples of many big international meets I have competed at and I hope that there will be more in the future, therefore with support and funding it would help make these trips achievable. If anyone is willing to help please contact my email [email protected] Many thanks Reg Lloyd

Page 15 Bentley Bugle – Feb 2018 / Mar 2018 BENTLEY COMRADES In December at our pre-Christmas meeting we watched a trio of films starting with Paul Heiney presenting The Countryside at War describ- ing the role played by civilians including the Women’s Land Army and the Home Guard. To mark the start of our Christmas festivities, the second film was a classic Morecombe and Wise Christmas Show, this was followed by an episode of ‘Allo,’Allo entitled “The Reluctant Millionaires”. During an interval Ray Savage generously supplied plates of mince pies and sausage rolls to complete an enjoyable evening. On 8th December 25 members, partners and friends sat down to our annual Christ- mas Lunch at the Holbrook Compasses. The event enabled several old friends to meet once again and was rounded off with a small raffle to raise funds for Comrades future activities. The New Year meeting on 3rd January was an opportunity to remind ourselves of how we have arrived at the current state of affairs in Korea. Our first film was from the series 20th Century Battles presented by Peter and Dan Snow featuring the Korean War and the part played by UK forces. In a lighter mood our next film was from Chris Barrie’s Massive Speed series and the history of warship development. To round off the evening we watched an episode of ‘Allo, ‘Allo entitled “A Duck for Launch”. Bentley Comrades is a gathering of ex-service personnel and those interested in the British Armed Forces. We usually meet on the first Wednesday of each month in the Village Hall Committee Room, supply our own refreshments and each make a contribution towards the hire of the hall. If you are interested in joining us please contact: - Ray Savage - tel. 311122 Michael Anderton

FRIENDS OF CAPEL LIBRARY First things first, it is my privilege to take over the Chair from Chris Yule and I would like to take the opportunity of thanking Chris for all his hard work over the last few years. Now back to business, how are your New Year resolutions going? My guess is that you’ve given up some already. Well why not make a new one to visit the library at least once a month. Suffolk Libraries have bucked the national trend for closures, but we cannot take this for granted in these use it or lose it times. The library is a central hub for the community and is used by young and old alike and everyone in-between. It is not just about books, but is also a place to meet and take part in regularly organised events, such as our successful cinema nights where the audience have recently enjoyed films such as Churchill & Dunkirk. Did you get a tablet PC for Christmas and are not sure what to do with it? Well, why not book into one of our popular computer classes to learn how to make the most of it. While you’re making that resolution, why not become a member of the ‘Friends’ to help us continue improving facilities provided at the library. Hopefully, by the time you are reading this, our new reception area will have been installed and we will already be well underway with our plans for 2018. Lastly we have vacancies for two new trustees, so if you can spare a couple of hours a month, why not join our dedicated team. If you are interested please contact us at the library. Trevor Stevenson

Bentley Bugle – Feb 2018 / Mar 2018 Page 16 TUESDAY CLUB We concluded 2017 with our Christmas Party when John Mills entertained us playing and singing a variety of Christmas songs and Carols which members were able to join in. After a delicious tea, a raffle was held and all members went home with a present, thus ending activities for the year. The Club reconvened in the New Year on the 16th January when we welcomed back Moira Usher who gave a most interesting talk on her trip to Uzbekistan which she illustrated with slides and memorabilia. Later in the month we had our first session of `Chair Aerobics` since the Christmas break followed by our Annual General Meeting. Our fortnightly afternoon meetings for February and March are listed under the `Parish Diary` in the front of the `Bugle Magazine`. New members & visitors are always welcome and if you are interested and would like a copy of our 2018 programme please ring me on 310655. Margaret Blackmore - Secretary, Tel: 310655

BENTLEY VILLAGE HALL - NEW YEAR`S EVE - `HOP`. Once again this annual event held in the Village Hall to welcome in the New Year was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Refreshments supplied by the revellers them- selves were as always delicious with a huge variety of food on offer to suit every taste. This was followed by a Grand Draw with over thirty prizes donated on the night which was greatly appreciated. Thanks again to our ever popular D.J. Disco for providing the music as well as the dedicated small band of hard working organisers who ensured that everyone had a good time. After expenses, all remaining funds which totalled nearly £400.00 were donated to the following local charities - `Guide Dogs for the Blind`, `Heartbeat`, and `Bentley Parochial Church Council` – a great Community effort. John Blackmore

BENTLEY VILLAGE HALL – CAR PARK. You may have noticed recently the car tyre tracks that have appeared in the gravel surface of the car park. These are caused by vandals revving car engines and then spinning their wheels, ripping up the gravel surface and causing damage to the subsurface layers. This is totally unacceptable and Hall users are asked to make a note of the registration of any vehicle causing a problem. These details will then be passed on to the Police who are already aware and will take further action as necessary! John Blackmore

The first half of the season was completed with a home match against Hintle- sham, and two away matches at Rivers and East Bergholt. who are the runaway leaders of the division proved too good for us, although we did achieve a very good win on one mat and a draw on another, to eventually only lose 3-7. Against Rivers at their new venue we did well to only lose by a small margin on aggregate 4-6, however at East Bergholt we ran out 7-3 winners although it was never easy against a team who for some reason are struggling at the foot of the division. Our next matches are versus East Bergholt, , and Stutton at home, and Bramford and Whatfield away. David Howe - Captain

CHARITY CARPET BOWLS On Saturday 6th January Jill Mills, John Alexander, Margaret Blackmore and Veronica Howe took part in the Suffolk Carpet Bowls Association Charity Fours at Needham Market. Forty five teams took part and each team played four matches. Bentley won their first game against , but lost the other three in very close games against Shalford B, Hitcham and Witnesham B. The games were all played in very good spirit and it was good to experience playing against new opponents. The winners on the day were a joint team made up from and Barking, well done to them. The chosen Charity this year was The John Le Vay Prostate Cancer Support and Information Centre at the Ipswich Hospital and the total raised on the day was £1750.00. A very good day was had by all, and it was great that such a remarkable amount of money was raised for a Local Charity. Jill Mills. Secretary

THEIR MARRIAGES OF OVER 50 YEARS BEGAN AT BENTLEY CHURCH BETWEEN 1918 & 1968 Of the 109 couples married at Bentley Church between the end of World War One in 1918 and 1968 at least 18 (one in six) stayed together for half a century or more. And the number may be higher. For there’s uncertainty about how long - lasting were or are the marriages of 30 couples (over a quarter) who tied the knot mainly in the 1950’s and 1960’s and possibly moved away from Bentley. The 18 long married couples had much in common. Besides being compatible they were healthy enough to live into their seventies when life expectation in and Wales in 1932 fell below 50 years for men and 63 for women. Also on marriage nearly all partners were living in Bentley or a neighbouring village and the men except for four in the Armed Forces, had blue collar jobs. Finally, living so long through often hard times demanded considerable resilience. Half of the long - married were wed for between 50 and 59 years and included Dennis and Daisy Grimwood (nee Crown) married between 1949 and 2008 for nearly 59 years. For their first three years they squeezed into Daisy’s parents’ home, long taken down, next to the School. With so much food rationed until 1953, little was wasted. Dennis remembers the fat from the roast was saved and as “dripping” eaten as a spread. Almost all of the remaining half of the long - married were together for between 60 and 69 years. Geoffrey and Mary Naunton (nee Porter) packed in the first four years of their 62 year marriage in Mary’s mothers Cottage in Case Lane. Before then Mary, disappointed that clothes’ rationing continued to her wedding day, borrowed parts of her wedding outfit. Only one marriage endured for over 70 years, Bertie and Muriel Locksmith’s of over 71 years and two months between September 1931 and November 2002. In the 1930’s, when UK unemployment peaked at over 15½ percent, Bertie delivered bread, much of it baked by his father in the Stoke area of Ipswich, both in and outside the town. In world War Two he was away from their own home, Mount Pleasant in Potash Lane, serving in the Royal Corps of Signals and in 1940 survived Dunkirk. Meanwhile Muriel (nee Coppen) kept busy, putting up refugees from Nazi – occupied Europe and bringing up elder daughter Jean (now Hall). The Locksmiths’ achievement, a record for Bentley and perhaps far beyond, will remain superior to the Queen’s and Prince Philip’s for another twelve months, until the end of January 2019.
