No matter whether you’re using a single gun and small oven or a large fully automated line, the process is basically the same. A powder spray gun is used, which when triggered gives an electrostatic charge to the powder particles passing through it. As the parts to be coated are grounded, the powder is attracted towards the part via the electrostatic process. Once the powder is applied the parts are cured in an oven, which melts and cross-links the powder over the surface of the part and creates a tough, scratch resistant and beautiful finish. There are literally thousands of different applications for powder coatings. Powder coating is used mainly on metals, so is perfect for industrial parts, medical devices, architectural applications, automotive refinishing, bicycle parts, household appliances, furniture, enclosures, trailers, lighting…the list goes on! There are many different types of powders used, each with their own characteristics and applications, so making sure you have the right type of powder, and THEN choose the color is very A GUIDE TO APPLYING POWDER COATINGS 01 www.ifscoatings.com important for a successful application. • How to Liqui-Powdrtm Coat Plastic Parts
How To Liqui-PowdrTM Coat Plastic Parts TM TM With the availability of Liqui-Powdr and Powdr 2 O products, powder coating plastics is not only possible but has advantages over simple painting as well. This document is designed to help you in deciding if this process is an option for your parts, and how to prepare and coat various types of plastic parts. W hat Can and What Cannot Be Liqui-Powdr T M C oated The use of powder coating on a plastic part depends on the part being able to withstand the heat of the curing process. This does not mean that the part has to be able to withstand 450º F. for 30 minutes in an oven. It does mean that you may need to do some experiments to find the best way to get the powder coating to melt and possibly cure without deforming the part in the process. To find out what the part will handle, it is best to start by asking the manufacturer. At what temperature does the part start to deform? If this is above the cure temperature of the powder you will have no problem using an oven to cure the coating. If the temperature is below that of the cure temperature of the powder or if the manufacturer of the part is not able to tell you the deformation temperature, you will need to be creative in melting and possibly curing the coating. The following are some of the creative ways that have been used to melt powder coating on plastic parts: 1.

PEER-REVIEWED ARTICLE bioresources.com Application of Electrostatic Powder Coating on Wood Composite Panels Using a Cooling Method. Part 1: Investigation of Water Intake, Abrasion, Scratch Resistance, and Adhesion Strength Memiş Akkuş,a Turgay Akbulut,b and Zeki Candan b Powder coating is environmentally friendly and safe in terms of human health and is used especially on home appliances and in the automotive sector. Because of these advantages, recent studies have expanded work on the application of powder coating on non-conductive surfaces. Within the scope of this research, low temperature curing (120 °C to 130 °C) was applied on wood-based composite panels of medium-density fiberboard (MDF), particleboard, and plywood to facilitate conductivity. Epoxy, polyester, and hybrid (epoxy-polyester) types of powder paint and water- based liquid paint (control group) were applied to the surface of materials. Panels coated with the powder coatings were compared to the panels coated with the water-soluble acrylic resin coating. The prepared samples were analyzed for performance properties. The best results for thickness swelling, water absorption, adhesive strength, abrasion, and scratch resistance were found for the plywood coated with water-based liquid paint, MDF coated with polyester-based powder paint, plywood coated with hybrid powder paint, particleboard coated with hybrid powder paint, and plywood coated with epoxy powder paint, respectively. • Powder Coating of Plastic Components
POWDER COATING OF PLASTIC COMPONENTS S. Gao, X.P. Zhu, H. Zhang and J. Zhu Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Western University, Ontario, Canada Abstract: The use of plastic components in automotive industries has been increasing steadily. The application of powder coating technology in processing plastic substrates has many advantages. However, the use of conventional electrostatic coating processes in coating plastic substrates cannot be very successful due to the plastics being non-conductive. In this paper, a thermo-powder coating technique in surface coating of the long-fiber thermoplastics is discussed. The process includes preheating the workpiece to between 110℃ and 160℃, then coating by using a Corona spraying gun, followed by thermo-curing. Three common powder coatings (polyester, epoxy and hybrid coatings) have been tested and showed promising results. In addition, the low-temperature process is used to reach the lower curing temperature with the aid of infrared curing. Experimental results showed that by preheating the plastic substrate, the powder deposition has been greatly improved, resulting in acceptable powder finishes. The surface conditions are further evaluated comprehensively in gloss, DOI and haze. Key words: powder coating, insulating substrate, surface evaluation. 1.Introduction Powder coating technology was first invented in Europe in the early 1960s. The painting with dry powder began to attract attentions from American industry due to its environmentally friendly factors. Powder coating has been widely used in the metal painting industry for several decades. Since the early 1970s, powder coating techniques were used for automotive components in North America. Initially the powder coating applications were mainly with underhood metal components, so it has been a basic requirement for the substrate to be conductive.
