Property An individual architect designed and uniquely styled modernist property situated on an amazing plot of around 0.75 acres in a quiet and peaceful location off Church Lane in Westbere. This four bedroom detached residence exudes organic charm and character within a tranquil and natural setting which is truly inspirational. The house is arranged on split levels with the ground floor level providing the living accommodation: first, an entrance hallway, then to the left and front a large lounge with parquet flooring, vaulted ceiling and log burning stove. There is access out onto a spacious balcony (raised decking) from which steps lead down to the garden. Once two separate rooms, the well-appointed kitchen is now connected to the dining area, which in turn leads to the study. French windows open onto a terrace (raised flagstones) used for summer dining. The utility room leads to the studio/workshop (formerly a garage) with a cloakroom and shower room completing the ground floor accommodation. On the first floor are two bedrooms serviced by a bathroom. On the lower ground floor there are two further bedrooms serviced by a shower room, walk-in linen cupboard and storage under the stairs. Externally, well established gardens wrap around the property with sweeping lawns, mature trees, flower beds and, notable in Spring, over thirty varieties of narcissus established here over a century ago. The balcony off the lounge is an ideal spot to enjoy the surroundings and charming aspect towards the church yard/nature reserve. Glimpses of Westbere Lake can be seen through the trees. The plot is approached via a long sweeping driveway from Church Lane with off-road parking for a number of vehicles.

Our Time Here We have lived here for ten years. We are the house’s second owners, after Dr Paddy Crawford, for whom it was built in 1964. It is a lovely place, with a magical atmosphere, beloved inside and outside equally, our inspiration as artists, our comfort and our home. Here we have shared freedom and safety with friends and family; this house has been special to many and a place of peace and of refuge. It has also been a place of creativity and time well-spent. We have lavished care on the property, and have changed and developed both the house and the garden. Westbere is not ‘en route’ to anywhere else. The only non-residentially related traffic to be seen in the village is that to and from our fourteenth century inn (the Old Yew Tree) and the pre-school children to the village hall. There is genuine community to be found here, with mutual support, community-based events and friendship all realistic parts of life in Westbere. The following amenities and services should be noted: Central London (St Pancras) is only 56 minutes from Canterbury, which is four miles from Westbere. Canterbury itself, a cathedral and university city, has theatres, cinemas, an Arts Festival, and dozens of good places to eat. Our nearest beach is , four miles to the North. Kings School Canterbury has its prep school in , just two miles down the road. The channel tunnel at Folkestone is thirty-five minutes away.

The house, the village, the community have been the fabric of our lives for a long time, and we shall miss all of it.
