The 16 victories are the most wins for a WSU softball team since both the 1989 and 1990 teams also won 16. The squad, however, remains young as there are no seniors on this year's team. Coach Sheila Nahrgang hopes to build upon last season's success and continue the climb upward in 1996. Five juniors are on this year's roster and will provide leadership for the young team. Ashley Anderson tied a school record 0 for victories in a season with 12 in 1995 and led the pitching staff in complete games (20), innings pitched (153.0) and strikeouts ( 45). At the plate, Anderson batted .272 with four doubles and 10 runs batted in. She again will be the ace of the Raider staff and will be in the infield when she is not pitching. Adee Ristas had 14 complete games with four wins as the number two pitcher on the Raider staff and batted .286 with two doubles. Catcher Corey Shoemaker was fourth on the squad in RBI with 13 and scored 13 runs in 1995. Erin McEnaney drove in six runs in limited action as a designated player last season while Angie Wallace stole three bases and scored IO runs last season as a pinch runner. Eight sophomores, seven of which started at least 36 games last season, also return for Wright State. Right fielder Amanda Kendrick batted .319 with 17 runs scored as she was named to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference's All Newcomer Team last .... season. She also recorded 10 outfield assists in 1995. Catcher Jenny Divac, who was the other Raider to make the All Newcomer Team, batted .311 with 15 RBI. She was the ninth toughest batter to strike out in Division I last season as she only had one in 103 at bats. Infielder Angie Lala batted .301 with three home runs and eleven extra base hits overall. She was named to the Winthrop Invitational's All Tournament Team and was the MCC's first Player of the Week last season. Second baseman Amy Arnold batted .250 with four doubles and seven RBI and also pitched five innings in 1995 and will likely have those roles again in 1996. Third baseman Mindi Miller led the Raiders in doubles with nine last season and tied with Angie Lala for the team lead in .... extra base hits with 11. Center fielder Rose Miller led the team with five stolen bases and scored 18 runs while recording 10 outfield assists. Left fielder Cassie Woyton was perfect in 76 fielding chances last season in both the outfield and at shortstop. First baseman Jennifer Johnson saw limited action in 1995 but should see more playing time this season. = Four freshmen make up the rest of the squad. Lisa Barr will be at first base and should provide another bat to the middle of the batting order. Ann Burrell will see action in the outfield while Kelly Herbst and Angie Hook give the Raiders much needed depth on the pitching staff as Anderson and Ristas pitched all but five of the team's 297 innings last season. The Raider schedule will again be difficult as Wright State has 23 games scheduled before the home opener against Northeastern Illinois on March 31. WSU will compete in tournaments at Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee and Winthrop this season along with road doubleheaders against Coastal Carolina, Winthrop, Ohio, Dayton, Akron and Morehead State and with MCC rivals Detroit, Butler , Wisconsin-Green Bay and Loyola. The home schedule is also strong as it features twinbills with Shawnee State, Dayton, Eastern Illinois, Toledo and Eastern Kentucky to go along with MCC foes Cleveland State, Northern Illinois and Illinois-Chicago, each of which will be among the favorites for the conference title this season. The season wraps up with the MCC Tournament at Northern Illinois May 9-11 , with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

It is also very much the same. After experiencing membership realignment and refo cusing its goals, the MCC is positioned to build upon an established foundation . A new logo symbolizing the MCC's revitalization was unveiled last year, and a positive focus 0 includes specific goals for improving the league' s market and competitive position. The conference has increased in its size over the last two years and now includes nine schools; after expansion in 1994, the 00. MCC now feature both public and private institutions. The result has been an affiliation of institutions with similar athletics goals that provides stability and major-market exposure. MCC markets, including five of the country's top 30 television markets, now include nearly 10 million TV households and encompass roughly 10 percent of the nation's television audience. The member institutions are generally located in major metropolitan areas and benefit from the business, .... cultural, educational and entertainment resources available to the university community. The "new" MCC is anchored in a solid tradition that began in 1979. Originally formed as a men's sports league, the conference added women's athletics in 1986-87. League members continue to advo cate competitive athletics as a valuable educational experience and as an important component in the process of higher education. Each institution is committed to fielding a broad-based NCAA Division I athletics program that .... develops physical fitness, academic development and moral character in its student-athletes. Among the MCC's established operating principles are efforts to enhance the student-athlete experience and to = maintain integrity, gender equity, academics excellence and fiscal responsibility in the athletics enter pnse. Best known for its men's basketball success, the MCC offers a total of 16 different championship sports (eight for men and eight for women). The league enjoys NCAA automatic qualification in men's basketball, women's basketball, softball and women's volleyball in addition to play-in access in baseball and men's soccer. The conference and its members have established ambitious goals for these "target priority" programs and continue to pursue national prominence in each. The MCC has also identified specific benchmarks for the continuation of its national basketball success and a position as one of the nation's top 10 Division I athletics conferences. The MCC moved its offices to in 1985, where the league headquarters has contributed to the city's image as the "Amateur Sports Capital of the World." In addition to many conference championships held in the city, the MCC and Butler University have cohosted a number of high-profile NCAA events. Commissioner Jon LeCrone, the league's third full-time chief executive, assumed the leadership baton in June 1992 and heads a six-person staff. Dr. Claire Van Ummersen, the president of Cleveland .... State University, is in her second year as the MCC president while CSU Athletics Director John Konstantinos chairs the conference's Executive Committee.
