INSECTICIDE APPLICATIONS BEFORE ENVIRONMENT BODY - - - Representations Invited From Affected Persons

The Manitoba Clean Environment Commission is considering applications from a number of municipalities and provincial government departments for permission to use insecticides against a variety of insects such as mosquitoes, forest tent caterpillars, cankerworms and spruce budworms. The commission says that any person likely to be affected by an order issued by them can make a representation for or against the application. If the commission receives a representation in connection with any application they may hold a public hearing before prescribing limits. Persons who wish to make a representation should notify the commission, in writing, by April 15. Copies of the applications can be obtained from the commission's office in Building 2, 139 Tuxedo Avenue, Winnipeg. The applicants and applications are: .To act against forest tent caterpillars -- Selkirk, Dauphin, Stonewall, , , the Rural Municipalities of North Norfolk, Gimli, Victoria Beach and , the Local Government Districts of and Armstrong, the Department of Public Works for the Legislative Building grounds, the Department of Northern Affairs for communities in the area of Toutes Aides, and the Department of Tourism, Recreation and Cultural Affairs for Spruce Woods, Birds Hill, Turtle Mountain, Whiteshell, Hecla Island and Grand Beach Provincial Parks and other campgrounds and picnic sites. .To act against cankerworms -- Selkirk, , Stonewall and the Department of Public Works for the Legislative Building grounds. .To act against mosquitoes -- Brandon, , Winnipegosis, Loni Beach, Dauphin, Portage la Prairie, Winnipeg and the L.G.D. of Pinawa. .To act against spruce budworm and jack pine budworm -- the Department of Tourism, Recreation and Cultural Affairs for 9,340 acres of parkland in various areas of the province. .Against grasshoppers -- the R. M. of North Norfolk. .Against leaf-eating insects -- the Village of Ste. Anne. The applicants would use a variety of chemicals, depending on the type of insect, but the most common would be malathion and methoxychlor. The method of appli- cation includes spraying and fogging, as outlined in the individual applications. - 30 -
