DI Men’s Track & Field Scholar Athletes of the Year & All­Academic Individuals Announced

NEW ORLEANS — Sean McGorty of Stanford, Ryan Crouser of Texas, Mason Ferlic of Michigan and Nick Miller of Oklahoma State have been named the Male Scholar Athletes of the Year in NCAA Division I Track & Field for the 2015­16 season by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Combining their accomplishments in the classroom and in competition during the recently MEN’S SCHOLAR ATHLETE completed academic year, these four men were the most exceptional among a group of 570 AWARD HISTORY men who earned USTFCCCA All­Academic honors on Thursday. Indoor Track 2016: Sean McGorty, Stanford 2015: Edward Cheserek, Oregon QUICK LINKS: USTFCCCA Division I All­Academic Team 2014: Edward Cheserek, Oregon 2013: Lawi Lalang, Arizona 2012: Chris O’Hare, Tulsa Scholar Athletes of the Year were selected as the highest finishing performers at the NCAA 2011: Miles Batty, BYU Division I Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championships who achieved All­Academic 2010: David McNeill, Northern Arizona 2009: Galen Rupp, Oregon status. Those who won individual championship titles ranked higher in the tie­breaking 2008: Jason Richardson, South Carolina process and cumulative GPA is weighed as the final tiebreaker. Indoor Field 2016: Ryan Crouser, Texas Separate awards are given to track athletes and field athletes for the indoor and outdoor 2015: Luca Wieland, Minnesota season, hence the four categories. 2014: Curtis Beach, Duke 2013: Alexander Ziegler, Virginia Tech 2012: Curtis Beach, Duke McGorty, a sophomore majoring in Management Science and Engineering, obtained a 3.51 2011: Scott Roth, Washington 2010: Ryan Whiting, Arizona State GPA during the track & field season. The Fairfax, Virginia native is the first male athlete from 2009: Jason Lewis, Arizona State Stanford to win the Indoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. He finished runner­up 2008: Ryan Whiting, Arizona State to Oregon’s Edward Cheserek in the 3000 and anchored Stanford’s DMR team to a fourth­ Indoor Track & Field place finish the previous night. 2007: Brad Gebauer, McNeese State

Outdoor Track Crouser, a graduate student in Finance, held down a 3.47 GPA during his only season of 2016: Mason Ferlic, Michigan eligibility this academic year. The Boring, Oregon native is the first Longhorn to win a 2015: Edward Cheserek, Oregon 2014: Lawi Lalang, Arizona Scholar Athlete of the Year Award from the Association. Crouser stood out in a big way as a 2013: Lawi Lalang, Arizona senior as he won the indoor shot put title and tied a collegiate record earlier in the season. 2012: Amaechi Morton, Stanford 2011: Amaechi Morton, Stanford 2010: David McNeill, Northern Arizona Ferlic, a graduate student pursuing his master’s degree in aerospace engineering, had a 2009: Galen Rupp, Oregon 2008: Jason Richardson, South Carolina 3.607 GPA. The native of St. Paul, Minnesota is the first Michigan athlete to be named Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year. Ferlic dominated the steeplechase all season long Outdoor Field 2016: Nick Miller, Oklahoma State and cruised to a three­second win at NCAAs over Arkansas’ Frankline Tonui. 2015: Sam Mattis, Penn 2014: Hayden Reed, Alabama Miller, a senior from Carlisle, England, notched a 3.59 GPA during his final year in 2013: Manuel Ziegler, Memphis 2012: Alexander Ziegler, Virginia Tech Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Outdoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year only competed three 2011: Alexander Ziegler, Virginia Tech times during the outdoor season but made the final one count as he won the hammer title 2010: Ryan Whiting, Arizona State 2009: Scott Sellers, Kansas State with a heave of 73.98m (242­8). 2008: Cory Martin, Auburn

Outdoor Track & Field All­Academic Individuals 2007: Barnabas Kirui, Mississippi

Including the Scholar Athletes of the Year, a total of 570 men from 161 institutions earned USTFCCCA All­Academic honors during the 2015­16 track & field season.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All­Academic Track & Field Team, the student athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards:

For the indoor season, a student­athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student­athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).

The team with the most All­Academic honorees was BYU with 17. Arkansas was close behind with 14, while Stanford and Nebraska each had 13.
