Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod

The Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is a music festival which takes place every year during the second week of July. Llangollen Pavilion is the home of this world famous event.

Singers and dancers from around the world are invited to take part in over 20 high quality competitions followed each evening by concerts where the best and most colourful competitors share the stage with professional artists.

The origins of the International Eisteddfod go back to 1945, when it was proposed that an international choral festival be added to the Welsh National Eisteddfod, in celebration of the end of the Second World War. Ultimately it was decided to establish an independent music festival in 1947 in Llangollen.

Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod has taken place every year since then. Today over five thousand singers, dancers and instrumentalists from around 50 countries perform to audiences of more than 50,000 over the 6 days of the event.

Famous performers at Llangollen have included , Red Army Ensemble, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. The final Sunday Evening Gala Concert has featured Katherine Jenkins, , , James Galway and Montserrat Caballe

Llangollen Pavilion was built in 1992 as a permanent home for the International Eisteddfod, which until then had been held in an increasingly massive tent.

All aspects of the Pavilion’s well appointed facilities are utilised. The arena and hall house the major competitions and concerts. The extensive fields become the festival village, providing stalls, catering and other audience services. Further rooms provide for performance preparation and event administration.

Llangollen Pavilion is the perfect stage for this wonderful event. The magnificent scenery of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, together with the industrial heritage of the World Heritage Site, provide a superb backdrop that never fails to inspire both performers and audiences.

Llangollen Food Festival

When the previous experienced organisers of the Food Festival pulled out of the event two years ago there was a real danger that the Llangollen Food Festival would no longer be able to continue.

Through the drive and enthusiasm of local businesses, a small group of volunteers the event took place and the past two years have been very successful.

One of the main contributors to that success was the professional help and support provided to the Food Festival Committee by the Pavilion staff who, through their knowledge and experience of the site, were able to advise and direct the Committee on the significant operational issues involved in the organisation of such a large Festival.

The staff joined the Committee so that the organisation and site arrangements were carried out through a Partnership approach which, without doubt helped to make the Llangollen Food Festival an outstanding success.

Another feature of the site is that it is versatile and easily accessed so that exhibitors can load and unload goods without having to traverse long distances to and from their vehicles. They can also have confidence that the experienced staff will have covered all Health & Safety matters to the high standard one would expect at such a venue.

Another advantage is that the Pavilion site is within just a short walking distance from the town centre where visitors to the Pavilion can have the opportunity to sample the many independent shops and take advantage of the many high quality restaurants and cafes located in the town centre.

Above all the location of the Pavilion in Llangollen provides visitors a superb vista in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and World Heritage Site.

Denbighshire Learning Network

I am writing to thank you following the huge success of our Pathways to Success Conference that we held at the Llangollen Pavilion last month.

The Pavilion was an excellent venue for this major event, and we took advantage of its great versatility. The setting of the Pavilion in the lovely Vale of Llangollen would be hard to better – a wow factor before you even enter the building!

Our guests on the day were really impressed.

The Foyer looked great and worked well for registration and as an operations centre. The auditorium looked perfect with excellent event lighting and staging – it was really impressive that we could seat 300 and still have display bays around the room for our 10 schools and colleges.

The adjoining gallery worked well as we could display students work at the same time as providing a refreshment area, and the Caterers were very happy with the kitchen and servery facilities.

The bar deck and conference rooms worked well for the enterprise project, workshops and School Council, and having the use of the arena was brilliant and a perfect area for the outdoor education displays on the stage together with the command tasks with the Army, BMX biking and abseiling (!) with Pro Active and other providers.

The feedback we have had from participants and guests has been full of praise for the venue. We had very positive comments about the range of facilities, plentiful easy free parking, and the whole ambience of the place. The latter is a stand out feature, and its probably a mixture of the beautiful location and the fifty years plus of the International Musical Eisteddfod that imbue the place with joy.

What the guests would not have picked up on was the excellent support we had behind the scenes from you staff. They could not have been more helpful in helping us plan and stage the event. Your technical staff worked really well with our sound and lighting people and it was so easy to work with Geoff on the organisation and set up. His amenability, and of all other colleagues, not only took away much potential stress but made managing the vent an absolute pleasure.

I wish you every success for the future and I look forward to our next event that we have booked for September.
