CONFERENCE EXPANDING While the WAC will be without a transitioning school this year now that GCU is a fully- fledged Division I institution, a new transitioning school is set to join the conference for the 2018-19 year. The Western Athletic Conference announced the addition of California Baptist University to the conference on January 13, 2017. The Lancers will begin competition in 15 WAC-sanctioned sports in the 2018-19 academic year. The university continues a meteoric rise which will see it begin the transition to Division I after just five years at the Division II level, the minimum allowable time period. The Lancers have had noted success in men’s soccer including an NCCAA Championship in 2011 and 2012. The Lopes are 11-2-1 against the Lancers all-time. As the conference sits today, the addition of California Baptist will bring the WAC up to 12 men’s soccer schools (the most of any WAC sport) and nine full members. The school is located in Riverside, Calif., the third WAC men’s soccer school in California (San José State, CSU Bakersfield). ‹ 8 › MEN’S SOCCER // NEWS, NOTES, NUMBERS vs. LOPES PUT IN THE SUMMER TIME LOPES TABBED 5TH PRESEASON Anticipating another program leap in GCU’s first year of Division I postseason In the way preseason polling generally goes, the Lopes were picked to finish fifth eligibility, most Lopes players chose to be on campus since May for five days per week in the Western Athletic Conference in 2017 after finishing in fifth place in 2016. SPRING HAS SPRUNG Spring soccer provided a great opportunity for Grand Canyon to welcome in some of the newcomers to develop chemistry prior to Fall 2017. The Lopes went toe-to-toe with some professional competition at GCU Stadium throughout March and April. With developmental training sessions every morning, the Lopes were then able to put their game to the test against some of the top competition on the Southwest. GCU’s five-game spring schedule consisted of two matches with Phoenix Rising FC (United Soccer League) as well as one game each against FC Arizona (National Premier Soccer League), University of New Mexico and Yavapai College. Coach Hyndman: “We are very fortunate that we have some professional teams in the environment that are also looking for their preseason games. We were also able to play New Mexico, an NCAA Tournament-type of team. We were able to do a final game with Yavapai College where we played our second team and got them some playing time.” In the three contests versus the professional soccer teams, the Lopes were able to record a draw in all three matches. GCU tied Phoenix Rising 2-2 and 1-1 before also tying FC Arizona 2-2.
