College entrance examination pdf

Continue The College Entrance Examination Board, or College Board, is a national, non-profit membership association with a training mission, inspiring and connecting students with college and opportunity. The College Board helps students transition from school to college by helping them prepare for their studies and go to colleges and universities. He also seeks to help international students in their transition to American colleges; Providing information on financial assistance; Help colleges identify, recruit, and drive students; and assisting teachers in public policy and advocacy. In addition, the organization sponsors educational research. At the time of its founding in 1900, the College Board had membership of twelve education institutions. The aim was to provide a common set of entrance exams to be used by colleges to make admission decisions. The first fifty high schools were accepted into the membership in 1959. At the beginning of the 21st century, the association included more than 3,900 schools, colleges, universities and other educational organizations. The College Board has three types of members. The first type, institutions, includes schools, colleges and universities. Secondary and higher education systems are the second type. Finally, the third type of member, non-profit organizations, covers institutions, associations and education departments. Membership requirements vary by type. Higher education institutions, for example, must be accredited and document the regular and substantial use of College Board programs and services, such as the Extended Placement Program (AP), THE SAT or the College Examination Program (CLEP). Members are elected annually at a meeting of the College Council. The college board is governed by an elected board of trustees, officials appointed by the board, and staff appointed by the president of the college board. The Board of Trustees includes teachers and administrators of secondary schools, colleges, universities and other educational organizations. Appointed officials include the President, Honorary President, Secretary of Corporation, Senior Vice President of Operations and Finance, Senior Vice President of Government Development and Vice Presidents for Government Relations, Research and Development, Communications/Public Relations, Academic Initiatives, Regions, Chief of Staff, Teaching and Training, Higher Education and International Services, and Human Resources. Programs and services While the provision of national, uniform entrance exams has always been an important function of the College Board, programs and services have expanded significantly over the years. The organization provides basic programs and services in (1) admission and college enrollment (e.g., Grade Assessment Service, SAT/National Merit Merit PSAT/NMS qualifying test; (2) guidance (e.g. career search); (3) financial assistance (e.g., College Scholarship Service and Institutional Needs Analysis System); (4) accommodation and counseling (e.g. CLEP); and (5) teaching and learning (e.g. EQUITY 2000 and Pacesetter). These programs and services are described, and most of them are available, on the College Board website. Perhaps its most famous program, the Scholastic Aptitude Test, was first introduced in 1926, was renamed the Scholastic Assessment Test in 1992, and then became known simply as the SAT. Taken by more than 1 million students annually during the fall, winter and spring, the SAT is a standardized test required for admission at many colleges and universities. The College Board owns the SAT and contracts with the Education Testing Service (ETS) to develop and administer the SAT and other standardized tests. There is no passing score on the SAT. Instead, individual institutions determine how the weight of the SAT is among other admission factors including high school rank and average score, essays and interviews. In 1929, the test was divided into oral and mathematical subtests. The three-hour SAT I: Reasoning Tests and Watch SAT II: Subject Tests were developed in 1990. Subjects in SAT II include writing, literature, U.S. history, world history, mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, and languages. PSAT was first put into administration in 1959 and was merged with NMS'T in 1971. PSAT/NMS'T is designed to measure critical reading, math and writing skills. In addition to practicing for the SAT, students can also qualify for scholarships and other recognition based on their tests. PSAT/NMS-T is usually accepted by high school juniors. The AP program, through which high school students can take college-level courses and obtain college credit or advanced placement in more than thirty subject areas, is one of the college board's other well-known programs. The first AP exams were introduced in 1956. The College Scholarship Service provides programs and services to help colleges, universities, and scholarship programs distribute student financial aid fairly. Financial assistance profiles and computer programs are among the service's offerings. New Enterprise and Future Outlook Former West Virginia Governor Gaston Caperton was appointed president of the college board in 1999. Caperton has launched a college board website, an online nonprofit that offers online SAT registration, practice tests, college searches, online college applications, career research tools, and information on college and financial aid costs. ETS has made significant financial investments in the company. Competing organizations claim that the site can limited information, since the College Board is made up of colleges and universities and will not, for example, that students and parents are negotiating a financial aid package. Caperton and the College Board will play an important role in future college admissions. Women and some minority groups have lower average POT scores, and some argue that the test is culturally biased. In addition, legal challenges and the elimination of affirmative action programs on admission on many campuses are changing the role of the SAT in admission and therefore the role of the College Board as well. In several states and systems, including California, Texas and Florida, some colleges and universities are reducing their dependence on the SAT and guaranteeing admission to students graduating in percentages at the top of their high school grades. In 2000, the president of the University of California system made a controversial faculty proposal there that applicants no longer have to take the SAT. He suggested a set of admission criteria that would provide a more holistic assessment of students would be less quantitative and would recognize a wide range of achievements. If the plan is approved, California will be the first system with a competitive reception to waive the SAT requirement. Other States struggling with the same problems are likely to pay close attention to what is happening there. Undoubtedly, the College Board intends to play an important role in any changes that occur. Its programs and services will continue to adapt to the growing diversity of its customers.
