2017 C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP

Postgame Quotes – Charlotte vs. Southern Miss Saturday, May 27, 2017

Southern Miss Head Coach Scott Berry On Braley’s walk-off: “I was in that third base box thinking, ‘He is going to one .’ I could just feel it. Never this team out. That is what they have shown all year. For seven we didn’t show a whole lot offensively. The thing that did show up was Hayden Roberts. How big did he play into this game? There were some really big at-bats. None bigger than Taylor Braley in that moment. It’s a great team effort. I’m proud of our club.”

On two-strike hitting: “It starts with attitude. Attitude controls how you compete. You play nine innings and that’s what we did today. We were able to get things going in the eighth and ninth like we have so many times this year. It makes a statement about this club. They don’t feel like they are out of the game until it is over.”

On reliever Hayden Roberts: “We saw that early in the year, but since going into the , he was really figured it out. It was a good, clean game for him. He had great control, and I thought his was outstanding.”

Junior DH Taylor Braley, Southern Miss On walk-off home : “I think he threw me a first and then it was all fast balls. I think that last one was a changeup.”

On mentality in the final at-bat: “I was talking to (Assistant Coach) B.A. (Vollmuth) and (Associate Head Coach Chad) Caillet said ‘BA would have walked up to me in 2009 and say ‘I’m fixing to win this game.’’ I said ‘If Irby gets on, I’m going to do it.’”

On adjusting when struggling most of the day: “I struggled at the plate last night and most of today. Coach always says your biggest at-bat is your last one. I took that into thought and flushed everything before that.”

On momentum from the eighth : “We knew it would take a few good at-bats to get it started. That’s a lot of momentum right there. It was good to keep that going.”

Charlotte Head Coach Loren Hibbs Opening Statement: “That was a great game between two teams that were playing at a really high level. They were just a little bit better than we were. We had a good plan and we were ready to play. Again, they were just a little bit better than we were. They’ve got older, veteran guys that have been through it before and have played at a high level. You have to match that if you’re the opponent. You have to have your older, veteran guys match that. We’ll go back to the hotel, get some food in our system and hydrate a little bit and see what we can do tonight.”
