religions Article “Only I Am the Brahma”: Religion and Narrative in the Netflix Thriller Series Sacred Games (2018–2019) Ana Ashraf Department of English Literature, KU Leuven, 3000 Leuven, Belgium; [email protected] Abstract: Sacred Games (2018–2019), based on Vikram Chandra’s novel of the same title, is India’s first Netflix crime thriller series. This series shows how the lives of a Sikh policeman, Sartaj Singh, and a powerful gangster, Ganesh Eknath Gaitonde, weave together in a mission to save Mumbai from a nuclear attack. The series immediately received critical acclaim and viewers’ appreciation, but the way the series represents the (mis)use of metanarratives of religious and political ideologies, as they come to influence Gaitonde’s life, needs further perusal. For this purpose, this article investigates how Gaitonde’s life, and its abrupt end, are shaped and challenged by the larger ideological and religious metanarratives of his milieu. At the same time, this article examines Gaitonde’s ability to gain control over his own narrative despite the overwhelming presence of these metanarratives. More specifically, Gaitonde’s transgressive will and his desire to tell his story are brought under scrutiny. Along with the analysis of Gaitonde’s character, this article also examines how the use of various cinematic and narrative techniques heightens self-reflexivity and metafictionality in Sacred Games and emphasizes the role of mini-narratives as unique, singular, and contingent, in contrast to the generic, universal, and permanent tones of metanarratives. "Sacred Games" - A Modern Indian Dystopia Nilakshi Roy Associate Professor, V.G.Vaze College, Mulund, Mumbai Abstract: Some of the primary characteristics of a dystopia are a pessimistic outlook and destructive way of living. The Sacred Games, a series by Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane portrays Mumbai in the grip of gangster raj: a disturbed universe of high treason, violence and destruction. A boy bludgeons his mother and her lover with a stone while his father goes silently to jail. The series portrays the thriving underbelly of Mumbai life, especially the kingdom of Urban Waste. The role played by the authorities in pursuing clues to the “Game” played by the hidden “messenger” overlord, is what adds grit and suspense to the plot, as disaster threatens all. Does this kind of dystopia continue the tradition of western dystopias or are there enough Indian models? Perhaps more than the writer, Vikram Chandra, the filmmakers have found correspondences that are more potent to unleash the evil, in a story that mockingly points to its Other, the “Sacred”, its obverse, in not something rational and profound, but quite arbitrary and casual, a mere “Game.” These are some of the questions this paper asks, while interrogating the relevance of the genre in literature and film today. What happens next is what Sacred Games is all about. By Ambar Ever since the trailers and promos of Chatterjee this series aired, I was excited about it. From 5th June midnight, I kept refresh- ing the Netflix page checking if the se- ries had come online. It was only about 11 am on 6th that it finally came through and I binged it at one go.It was unprec- edented excitement for me. Sacred Games is terrific not only in its content and treat- Director: ment but in its sensational performances. Specifically exploring the figure of the gangster in Bombay cinema in the context of recent events of militant attacks in Mumbai, and tracing the empirical and cinematic transformation of the gangster into terrorist, this article argues that the cultural biog- raphies of these figures, available through cinema, fiction, non-fiction writing and other forms of mass media are instructive as ‘reading principles’ through which chaotic and transitional urban spaces acquire legibility in popular imagination. -

The film is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and stars Harshvardhan Kapoor in the lead. The film, a vigilante drama set in Mumbai, is the story of one young man’s quest for revenge, and the discovery that he’s destined for much bigger things. The film promises some intense action and well-crafted hand combat fights, which have been designed by an international crew, and is shot at some never before seen locations in and around Mumbai. It has music by Amit Trivedi & lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya, who have worked with Motwane on his earlier films Lootera and Udaan. Motwane’s last release, Trapped, won huge acclaim and a good box office run apart from starting Rajkummar Rao’s dream run this year. Motwane, who has been busy with shooting Netflix’s first India Original series Sacred Games, says, “The story explores love, friendship, anger and heroism and its relevance in today’s times. It’s been with me for a very long time and I’m delighted at the way it’s turned out. It is important to understand this series because it has opened a market for Indian television series on Netflix in India. In this show, the narration of the city’s representation becomes the focal point to understand the relationship between cop-gangster-city which is a common concept but the way it is depicted is in the form of seasons and episodes. It deals with the aspect of the portrayals of gendered politics, women, patriarchy, communal violence, gangsters, politicians, mafia, businessmen and the Mumbai Police. It also targets subjects of controversy like the relationship between lawmakers and breakers, religious violence, fake encounters, and corruption in the entertainment industry. Sacred Games stands out as a series from the rest because, of its narrative style and its unique portrayals of city, characters, themes and plot lines. To understand Sacred Games as a web series, an in-depth content analysis method for each episode is used.
