About UMD Athletics
Now in its 87th year of operation, the University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Intercollegiate Athletics continues to maintain one of the most competitive and well-balanced sports programs of its size in the country.
Fourteen of UMD’s 16 teams — baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, women’s soccer, softball, women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball — are members of the 16-member NCAA Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The NCAA Division I men’s and women’s hockey programs, meanwhile, are aligned with the eight- team National Collegiate Hockey Conference (which debuted in 2013-14) and the eight-school Western Collegiate Hockey Association, respectively.
(UMD, at one time, also sponsored a number of other successful programs such as men's tennis, men's and women's golf, wrestling, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's cross country skiing).
@umdbulldogs now has nearly 14,600 Twitter followers -- the second most of any NCAA II athletic department in the nation.
Over 200,000 fans attended Bulldog home events in 2017-18.

Topping that list is the dazzling $80-million, 6,756-seat AMSOIL Arena, which the Bulldog men’s and women’s hockey teams christened in December 2010. It’s located on the St. Louis Bay waterfront near Duluth’s famous Aerial lift bridge and Canal Park — and a stone’s throw from the Bulldogs’ previous hockey home, the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center (DECC).
While the DECC was known as a great place to watch a game, the level of fan comfort is taken to new heights inside AMSOIL Arena. From simple things like seat width and leg room to necessities like additional restroom facilities, fan comfort and convenience are the hallmarks of the Bulldogs’ new digs. Designers took cues from other successful and popular sports facilities and incorporated fan-friendly touches like an open concourse around much of the lower seating bowl, meaning that a trip to one of the numerous concession stands will not mean missing any of the on-ice action. And, if they do, there is a $1 million, 8’ x 14’ matrix scoreboard hung above center ice, which provides in-game replays, videos, and graphics in 10-millimeter LED display.
AMSOIL Arena is also equipped with something the DECC never had — private suites, some 15 in all. In addition, the Champions Lodge, located on the main level adjacent to one of the college hockey’s finest and most spacious press boxes, serves as a gathering space for UMD athletic donors, alumni and supporters. At the other end of the hallway is the Hall of Fame Suite, which holds up to 34 people and contains plaques of the 30-plus Bulldog men and women hockey alums and coaches who are members of the UMD Athletic Hall of Fame. 15
James S. Malosky Stadium
Northern Minnesota’s premier outdoor athletic venue, James S. Malosky Stadium has been the home of UMD football for over five decades. And, the Bulldogs have certainly taken advantage of their home turf during that time. In 269 lifetime appearances at Malosky Stadium, the Bulldogs have posted a 206-54-4 overall record for .788 winning percentage. Since the start of the 2008 season, UMD is an eye-popping 52-4, including a perfect 38-0 mark against Northern Sun Intercollegiate North Division foes. And talk about consistency. Only five times has UMD ever failed to produce a .500 or above record at the on-campus facility, which is named after legendary Bulldog football head coach Jim Malosky and opened on Oct. 29, 1966. In 2008, a $6.5 million, four-level structure, which includes a concession area, spacious club room and press/broadcast facilities, was added to the grandstand. The following year, a new $325,000 scoreboard, 48’ x 33’ in size, debuted in the north end zone and now contains a 12’ x 22’ LED video screen. Three summers ago, new artificial turf was installed at Malosky Stadium and in 2017 the running track surrounding that playing field was completely redone. In addition to housing the football, women’s soccer and track and field Bulldogs, the 4,500-seat Malosky Stadium also hosts a number of high school athletic events throughout the year as well as various UMD intramural activities. 16
Romano Gymnasium
Romano Gymnasium, renamed in honor of the late UMD athletic director Ralph Romano in 1987, has hosted Bulldog men’s basketball for well over a half-century (it opened in 1953) and women’s basketball and volleyball since the early 1970s. The 2,759-seat facility is in the midst of a $10 million renovation initiative. The first of three phases was completed this past spring with the upgrading of the men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms. Phase Two is expected to be completed in September 2018 and includes the addition of new NCAA competition grade wood flooring, enhanced lower level seating with back supports, aisle mounted hand rails and increased ADA capacity, new high-end floor mounted basketball standards, and a new climate control system– including air conditioning and humidity control. Funds are still being raised for Phase 3, and on that list are a club room as well as significant updates to the Romano lobby area and atrium outside the gymnasium, and renovation of the women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, and football locker rooms. Additional locker room renovations are planned for more Bulldog Division II programs in coming years.
Sports and Health Center
A $13 million addition to the Sports and Health Center was completed in August 2006. The two-level 46,000-square foot facility provides state-of-the-art weight training and cardio equipment for UMD students and athletes.
Junction Avenue Field
Junction Avenue Field is the long-time on-campus home for UMD softball. This natural grass complex, which is lighted for night play, was built in 1987 and has seating for approximately 250 spectators. 17
Ward Wells Fieldhouse
Constructed in 1975, the Ward Wells Fieldhouse is the home for both UMD men’s and women’s indoor track and field. It contains three full-length basketball/tennis courts and a 176-yard, six-line track. Currently is under construction for new flooring.
Bulldog Park
The UMD baseball team plays its home games at Bulldog Park, which is located adjacent to James S. Malosky Stadium on the eastern edge of campus. Constructed in 1988, Bulldog Park contains one of the top natural grass playing surfaces in the area and is also used by various local high school and youth baseball teams. 18
