February 2, 2020 Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time the From Pastors Desk

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

There are times when I check the calendar for inspiration for this column, and this being one of them, I was surprised to see the line up for this week. Today is the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Candlemass, as well as the World Day for Consecrated Life; stepping slightly into the secular sphere it is also Scout Sunday. Monday finds us celebrating St. Blaise, honoring the by the of throats, with candles that are blessed during the Candlemass. We also celebrate St. Ansgar, St. Agatha, St. Paul Miki and Companions, St. and St. Josephine, as well as other observances. However, the celebration that caught my eye also occurs on Sunday, and that is the observation of Groundhog Day.

While everyone will be waiting for Holbrook Hal, our local celebrity groundhog, to predict the weather and the arrival of Spring, others of us will be pondering the irony of those showing the movie Groundhog Day twenty-four hours straight. For those who do not know the movie, it’s worth a watch, once, maybe twice, then wait a few years, don’t become an addict. For those who do not want to watch it, or who need to be reminded of what it is about: a reporter, covering the emergence of a groundhog, finds himself trapped in a loop, repeating the same day over and over, despairing at first, he begins using the opportunity to improve his life in various ways, of course for those outside this time loop, it seems like an incredible transformation of the character from the day before.

There are times I feel like I am on a loop, getting up in the morning, following the same routine to get ready for Mass, writing columns, reviewing expenses, trying to save souls, etc…. Of course, each day brings its own challenges and opportunities, whether it is assisting a young person who has found themselves in trouble, either because of drugs or alcohol, or other decisions that took them down a bad road, or revealing the glory of God, made known through the artistic talents of another Christian. There are meetings, at the parish, or diocesan level, which demand my attention, and most of these seem repetitive, but somehow necessary. Then maybe we have to deal with a toilet that backed up, which breaks the repetition, and brings to mind the saying “Be careful what you wish for.”

Unlike Bill Murray’s character in the movie, I have to confess that I do not spend every day improving myself, taking ad- vantage of what is presented, because when the opportunity to not do anything presents itself, I try to use it as an opportunity to study the insides of my eyelids. Even though we have gotten to the very last chance to say it’s , with the celebra- tion of the Presentation of the Lord, I still have unopened cards to go through. Because of the introduction of new programs into the parish, and expansion of existing ones, things that had found a place have to be moved to another place. Boxes I brought with me, two and a half years ago have yet to be emptied, and fifty years of accumulation in the Rectory and other places, need to be organized, categorized, or exorcized.

Then there is the one thing I love to do, even though it has been the same for 2000 years; the Mass. The Mass I celebrate to- day, is the same Mass I will offer Sunday, because it is the same Mass that has ever been, or ever will be, offered. Here is something beautiful in its repetition, because it is the Mass that offered to His Apostles at the , that He of- fered on the Cross. And even though it is the same Mass as I offered every Sunday since I was ordained, there is something newly realized every time I celebrate the Eucharist. Even if it is the awareness that I have encountered during many elevations, that what I hold in my hand is what hung on the Cross; that what I offer to those who come up to receive the Blessed Sacra- ment, is exactly what Christ offered to save humanity.

Even though it is the same Mass which we come to, Sunday after Sunday, year after year, it is never boring, it is never without wonder, because it is the coming of God into our lives, into our world, as has never been known in any other way, except for those years when He actually walked among us as a man.

Pax,

Fr. Henry

Diocese of Rockville Centre announces Morning Star Initiative

As you may have heard, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has decided to launch a bold plan, called the Morning Star Initiative, to revitalize Catholic elementary school education on Long Island. The goal of this initiative is to restore a robust Catholic culture to the DRVC schools, improve academics, and create a more fiscally sustainable model for schools. The Diocese will partner with the Marianists, who have two centuries of Catholic educational commitment and expertise. The Diocese has asked Brother Thomas Cleary, S.M., President of Chaminade High School, to serve as the Chief Revitalization Officer and to spearhead this effort. He will be assisted by his fellow Marianists, who will seek feedback and ideas from the full spectrum of those with a stake in a revitalized Catholic elementary education, includ- ing our parishioners. We value your input, so please share your thoughts. Please visit the Di- ocese of Rockville Centre’s website at Morningstarinitiative.org for more information, and email [email protected] to give feedback or find out more ways to get involved.
