The playground was designed to positively impact all children seeking care at Gundersen, while also serving as a memorial for their son, A.C.V. (Vanny) Elston IV, who died at age 5 after a five- month struggle with leukemia. “We wanted to provide a fun-filled play space where children could dream, imagine, and heal while playing and relaxing with their families,” says Mary. The Elston Memorial Playground opened in 1979, was updated in 1994, and was recently reopened after renovations this fall. “The renovations include a complete redesign and rebuild of the playground space,” says Van. “A variety of low energy, visual, sound, and motion devices are part of it, so all children, even those limited in some capacity, can enjoy the space.” u < Van and Mary Elston attended a rededication of The Elston Memorial Playground which was reopened after recent renovations in October.
