VirtualBox Installation for the PE A SunCam online continuing education course

Abstract & Preamble

Engineering Practices - With the recognition of the Professional Engineer (PE) status for the practice of Computer Engineering in April of 2009, the practice of Control Systems Engineering in October of 2011, and the practice of Software Engineering in April of 2013, there has been the need for specialized continuing education courses related to these practices.

1.0 Installing (OS) Environments – The Linux OS can be installed as the host operating system on most laptop and desktop computers using the popular variants of the AMD and Intel microprocessors. Many systems are purchased using these microprocessors with a OS as the host. You may also have an installation with Apple or SunOS installed. For uniformity, we introduce the VirtualBox application and install Linux in a virtual machine.

We find VirtualBox using the search engine

Select (double click) the Oracle VM VirtualBox link: https://www.virtualbox.org/ www.SunCam.com Copyright 2016 Raymond L. Barrett, Jr. Page 2 of 13

And follow the link to the download: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

Select (double click) in the “platform list selection” for the operating system on your computer. The installation program associated with the selection should be able to identify characteristics of your “platform” and provide the correct binaries for your machine. Make sure that the binaries match your host and direct the dialog box to save the Binary . When you look at the Downloads , you should see that the file is copied there.

Select (double click) the binaries file in the Downloads directory to activate the installation Wizard as follows: www.SunCam.com Copyright 2016 Raymond L. Barrett, Jr. Page 4 of 13

Select (click) the binaries file in the Downloads directory to activate the installation Wizard as follows:

You should see a first Customization dialog box similar to the one above that will ask about the installation; the default settings are recommended for selection.

You should see a second Customization dialog box similar to the one below that will ask about the installation; the default settings are recommended again.

You may see a Warning dialog box similar to the one below that will ask about the installation; unless you have an unusual network configuration, the interruption should do no harm.

You will see a dialog box similar to the one below that informs you on installation progress. This part of the process depends on the internet capability of your host machine and may take substantial time if the connections are slow.

You will see a dialog box similar to the one below that offers to install software drivers. Most often this is unnecessary, but you may have problems with client installations accessing the functions described. Unless you know about such issues, cancel the offer.

You will see a dialog box similar to the one below that indicates successful installation.

2.0 Client Installations -

You will see an applications window similar to the one below that indicates VirtualBox is running. You start to build all client machines as “New” machines. The procedure from this point is repeated every time you construct another virtual machine client.

You will see an applications window similar to the one below that indicates VirtualBox is ready to configure a virtual machine client.

You will see an applications window similar to the one below that indicates VirtualBox is ready to configures a virtual machine client as a Microsoft Windows client; it takes this information from the host OS installation.

We have indicated to VirtualBox to configures the virtual machine client as a Linux 64-bit client; with the machine name set to “Virtual 1.” We could have chosen any name including Linux 1 with the understanding that we support the possibility of supporting several virtual machines simultaneously. One application we are using VirtualBox to support is the side-by- side comparison of Linux distribution installations. Virtual Box supports numerous disparate installations this way.

You will see a dialog box similar to the one below that asks about a virtual machine memory size. This default is suggested.

You will see a dialog box similar to the one below that asks more about the virtual hard- drive. This selection indicated is suggested. There are some fault situations that allow the dynamically allocated selection to fill the entire host disk space.

You will see a dialog box similar to the one below that asks more about the virtual hard-drive fixed allocation. This default is suggested.

Congratulations, you have configured a virtual machine that expects you to install a Linux operating system distribution. You can and re- it as any other application window.
