THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25)

Page Three February 4, 2018 A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M.

Being a priest gives me the opportunity to do the work I signed up to do. Pray. Reflect. Teach others the Good News. And serve. All that happens on a good day. I have good days. I want you to have good days as Christians and not just as good human beings. During Christmas time I shared this reflection. Sitting in the church I noticed the manger scene in front of the altar and the crucifix behind it. Two different kinds of spiritualties. Not competing, not one better than the other. They are just different. The manger with all of its characters is the mystery and gift of the Incarnation. Those who arrived at it came from near and far. They weren’t disciples. They rejoiced in their find, paused and worshiped. Then they returned home differently. The cross is very different. Those who gathered at the foot of the cross were disciples and his Mother; they were initiated into the community of Jesus. A guard confessed faith in him. Two different spiritualties. I left the church differently. You see, the church is not just the place we go to – it’s the place we go from. Converted to the Word of God we go to live life differently. In today’s Gospel we find two different actions. One is the miracle of Jesus healing Simon’s mother-in-law AND service, her response. Which surprises you? We commonly refer to the passage as “the healing of Simon’s mother-in-law.” Is her response - serving Jesus - remembered and imitated? And what might have been the un-named mother-in-law’s own response to serving Jesus? “WOW! I just fed the Savior of the world who just cured me!” And what might have been Jesus’ own response? Perhaps: “Let her serve me so that she will feel valuable?” Where do you get the energy to serve AS JESUS SERVED, not serve as kind humans help one another, but AS JESUS SERVED? That energy is the grace of God. You get it from coming to church, from prayer, from faith formation. If not, is your helping others truly Christian? Unless your service imitates that of Jesus and those he served, you are nice people but not Christians. Realize it is Jesus you are serving. “I was hungry, sick, alone…and you helped ME.” Jesus is that other person! What is your response to serving Jesus? Isn’t your life changed? Here’s the Christian question: “Who is the service provider and who is receiving the service?” The needs of others are invitations to us. Awareness of the other evokes compassion in us, who witness it, if we're sensitive enough to resonate to it. You have to notice someone in order to know them, and know them in order to love/serve them, especially unattractive strangers. Until I notice the other, neither humanity nor Christianity stands a chance. Until I notice the other on a human level I can’t feel empathy. When I recognize the gift of God’s grace changing my life, I’ll extend the Christian virtue of compassion to others. I pray we experience the love of Jesus and respond by extending his love to others.

●Our day of 24 Hour Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is Tuesday, the first Tuesday of February, February 6 following the 8:00AM Mass concluding just before the 6:30AM Mass on Wednesday, February 7. Come and renew yourselves before the Lord Himself. Come, pray, relax before the Lord. The Church and its Blessed Sacrament is not just the place you go to – it’s the place we go from. Converted to the Word of God, go to live life differently. ●Ash Wednesday is February 14 – Valentine’s Day. Masses and distribution of ashes at Mass will be celebrated at 6:30, 8:00 and 10:30 in the morning and 7:00 in the evening. There is no dispensation from the discipline of Ash Wednesday. It is not a holy day of obligation but is a day of fast and abstinence. ●During Mr. Tony Verhallen (a retired teacher from Servite High School and a lecturer for the Diocese of Orange and Valyermo Benedictine Retreat Center) and I will be presenting the Gospels of St. Mark and St. Matthew on each Monday from 7-8:30PM. The Lenten series begins on Monday, February 19, the President’s Day Holiday. IT WILL BE LIVELY. All you need to bring is yourself, friends, enemies, and a Bible. Learn the Good News, be converted to the Good News, and practice the Good News. Spread the word! Page Four

Eucharistic adoration is the act of worshipping God as He is present in the consecrated Eucharist. Spending time before the Blessed Sacrament, in prayer and devotion, is exactly the same as spending time before the living God. Fr Benedict Groeschel points out in “In the Presence of Our Lord: The History, Theology, and Psychology of Eucharistic Devotion” that there are ‘four kinds of prayer most appropriate in the presence of the Eucharist, namely adoration and praise, thanksgiving, repentance, and trusting intercession.’ Here are suggestions what to do during private Eucharistic adoration. 1. PRAY THE PSALMS OR THE LITURGY OF THE HOURS Whether you are praising, giving thanks, asking for forgiveness, or seeking an answer, you’ll find an appropriate psalm. The ancient prayer of the Church called the Liturgy of the Hours presents an excellent way to pray through the Book of Psalms throughout the year. 2. RECITE THE “JESUS PRAYER” Say “Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, a sinner”, repeatedly as you quiet your heart and mind. 3. MEDITATE USING SCRIPTURE Choose a passage from the Bible. Read the words and ask God to let the passage speak to you. Pay special attention to anything that strikes you and ask God what He wishes for you to draw from that passage. 4. READ THE LIFE OF A SAINT AND PRAY WITH HIM OR HER Most holy men and women have a great devotion to Our Lord in the Eucharist. Therese of Lisieux, Catherine of Siena, , , Peter Julian Eymard, Dorothy Day, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and Baroness Catherine de Hueck are just a few. Read about them and pray their prayers before the Blessed Sacrament. 5. POUR OUT YOUR HEART TO CHRIST AND ADORE HIM Speak to Jesus, aware that you are in His presence, and tell Him all that comes to your mind. Listen for His response. Pray the prayer that St Francis instructed his brothers to pray whenever they were before the Blessed Sacrament: “I adore you, O Christ, present here and in all the churches of the world, for by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.” 6. ASK FOR FORGIVENESS AND INTERCEDE FOR OTHERS Think of those who have hurt you and request a special blessing for them. Ask God to forgive you for all the times you have neglected or hurt someone else. Bring before the Blessed Sacrament all those who have asked you to pray for them. Ask the Lord to address their concerns. 7. PRAY THE ROSARY John Paul II reminds us, “…is not the enraptured gaze of Mary as she contemplated the face of the newborn Christ and cradled him in her arms that unparalleled model of love which should inspire us every time we receive Eucharistic Communion?” (The Church and the Eucharist, 55) Ask Mary to join you as you gaze on Christ in the Eucharist and as you pray the Rosary. 8. SIT QUIETLY AND JUST “BE” IN THE PRESENCE OF GOD Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Sit quietly and enjoy being in each other’s company. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you.
