Page Two THE PARISH AS ONE BODY “If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God placed the parts, each one of them, in the body as he intended… The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I do not need you,’ nor again the head to the feet, ‘I do not need you.’ Indeed, the parts of the body that seem to be weaKer are all the more necessary . Now you are Christ’s body, and individually parts of it. “ (1 Cor. 12:17-25) The Seven Essenal Elements of Parish Life constantly interrelate, each nurturing and supporng the other with the communal celebraon of Sunday Eucharist at the center. Catholic Women Debbie Shimaoka 714-441-0446 Page Three February 4, 2018 A NOTE FROM FR. MIKE PONTARELLI, O.S.M. Being a priest gives me the opportunity to do the work I signed up to do. Pray. Reflect. Teach others the Good News. And serve. All that happens on a good day. I have good days. I want you to have good days as Christians and not just as good human beings. During Christmas time I shared this reflection. Sitting in the church I noticed the manger scene in front of the altar and the crucifix behind it. Two different kinds of spiritualties. Not competing, not one better than the other. They are just different. The manger with all of its characters is the mystery and gift of the Incarnation. Those who arrived at it came from near and far. They weren’t disciples. They rejoiced in their find, paused and worshiped. Then they returned home differently. The cross is very different. Those who gathered at the foot of the cross were disciples and his Mother; they were initiated into the community of Jesus. A guard confessed faith in him. Two different spiritualties. I left the church differently. You see, the church is not just the place we go to – it’s the place we go from. Converted to the Word of God we go to live life differently. In today’s Gospel we find two different actions. One is the miracle of Jesus healing Simon’s mother-in-law AND service, her response. Which surprises you? We commonly refer to the passage as “the healing of Simon’s mother-in-law.” Is her response - serving Jesus - remembered and imitated? And what might have been the un-named mother-in-law’s own response to serving Jesus? “WOW! I just fed the Savior of the world who just cured me!” And what might have been Jesus’ own response? Perhaps: “Let her serve me so that she will feel valuable?” Where do you get the energy to serve AS JESUS SERVED, not serve as kind humans help one another, but AS JESUS SERVED? That energy is the grace of God. You get it from coming to church, from prayer, from faith formation. If not, is your helping others truly Christian? Unless your service imitates that of Jesus and those he served, you are nice people but not Christians. Realize it is Jesus you are serving. “I was hungry, sick, alone…and you helped ME.” Jesus is that other person! What is your response to serving Jesus? Isn’t your life changed? Here’s the Christian question: “Who is the service provider and who is receiving the service?” The needs of others are invitations to us. Awareness of the other evokes compassion in us, who witness it, if we're sensitive enough to resonate to it. You have to notice someone in order to know them, and know them in order to love/serve them, especially unattractive strangers. Until I notice the other, neither humanity nor Christianity stands a chance. Until I notice the other on a human level I can’t feel empathy. When I recognize the gift of God’s grace changing my life, I’ll extend the Christian virtue of compassion to others. I pray we experience the love of Jesus and respond by extending his love to others. ●Our day of 24 Hour Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament is Tuesday, the first Tuesday of February, February 6 following the 8:00AM Mass concluding just before the 6:30AM Mass on Wednesday, February 7. Come and renew yourselves before the Lord Himself. Come, pray, relax before the Lord. The Church and its Blessed Sacrament is not just the place you go to – it’s the place we go from. Converted to the Word of God, go to live life differently. ●Ash Wednesday is February 14 – Valentine’s Day. Masses and distribution of ashes at Mass will be celebrated at 6:30, 8:00 and 10:30 in the morning and 7:00 in the evening. There is no dispensation from the discipline of Ash Wednesday. It is not a holy day of obligation but is a day of fast and abstinence. ●During Lent Mr. Tony Verhallen (a retired teacher from Servite High School and a lecturer for the Diocese of Orange and Valyermo Benedictine Retreat Center) and I will be presenting the Gospels of St.
