( A MISSIONARYPICTORIAL Biographical sketches and pictures of men and women who have gone from the United States as members of churches of Christ to carry the gospel to other lands. TOGETHER WITH Articles and poems written for the purpose of stirring churches and individuals to greater activity in the effort to preach the gospel to "every creature under ( heaven." • EDITOR CHARLES R. BREWER • P UB LISHED BY WORLD VISION PUBLISHING COMPANY 1033 BELVIDERE DRIVE NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE 1964 ( Preface The divine char ge to take the word of the Lord to the whole world is laid upon all who wear the name of Christ, and God is ple ased with all who have a part, directly or indirectly in carry ing out th -:: great commission . But we feel th at in a special way his blessing descends on those who, forsaking th e ways of ga in and pleasure , give them selves wholly to th e preaching of the word. "How beautiful are the feet of th em that bring glad tidin gs of good thin gs." T hat is God's own tribute to those who dedicate their lives to such work. Perhaps no one demonstrates mor e faith or makes greater sacrifice th an thos e who go into what we call " th e mission field", hard pla ces and strange lands to give light to peopl e who sit in darkness , and turn them from Satan to God. Such ser vants of the Lord are worthy of our recogn ition , and in giving them our commendation we a re but [ulfillin g th e teachin g to give "honor to whom honor is due." In bringing out this book it is our aim to carry out this ad monition by givin g honor to all who have served or are now servi ng in foreign fields. And it is ou r hope that this volum e may encourage indi vidu als and congregations to "lift up their eyes and look on th e field", and pray for and send more lab orers in to th e harvest. Over a period of 70 years approxim atel y 400 hav e gone from churches of Chri st in th e United States as mission aries to other lands and nations. There are about 200 on th e field now . It was our wish to give pictures and biographical sketc hes of all these workers. But it has been imp ossible to make the recor d compl ete. Hundreds of lette rs were writt en, bu t not all have been answered . As far as possible we have tr ied to includ e at least th e n ames a nd addr esses of eve n those who did not supply in form at ion. T he or iginal purpose was to assign a full pag e to each en trant. But in some cases we did not receive sufficient infor mation to fill a page. T herefo re wh en two or more appear on a page the reade r will pleas e understand th at it was because not enough copy was submitt ed. There was no int enti on to exa lt one above anoth er. An exce ption is made in th e case of Broth er McCaleb who was a pioneer amon g us. We feel th erefore that he is worthy of th e ded icat ion. T he book is so ar ranged th at add itional pag es may be inserted as more "ar ise and go ", and more mat erial is suppli ed. We hope th at in later ed itions or addi tions we may include pictur es and sketches of nativ e workers in all th e nations. T his h as not been an easy task , but has been a work of love. T he edit or cann ot claim any cred it or assume any respon sibilit y for th e mat erial in th e book. All th e "leg work" was don e by Bro th er Mor ehead. T he edit or's task has been simp ly to edit th e copy a nd prepare it for th e printer. Gr atefu l acknowledg ement is made to all who hav e had a part in thi s und ertaking . T he en tir e edition was bought and paid for before the copy went to th e print er. Many indi vidu als and congrega tions sub scribed for ten or more cop ies. Through the lib era lit y of friends it is our pl an to furnish a copy for th e lib rary of each of our colleges an d orp han hom es. Ma ny will be plac ed in th e offices of doctors a nd denti sts, a nd in the offices of editors . We hope th at eld ers in congrega tions where cop ies go will encour age memb ers to use them to in form th emselves on what is bein g don e to sp read the gospel of Christ. It would be good to use th e book as a source-text in classes to acqua int th e memb ers with our missionary activit ies and stimul ate mor e int erest in mission work . Althoug h not personally acqua int ed with all whose names are includ ed we assume that those who give th eir lives to such wor k ar e men and wome n of honor a nd int egrit y, and are sou nd in faith and teachin g. T he assumpti on is furt her ju stified by the fact that each missio nary is supp ort ed, th erefore is endors ed, by some congr egation or gro up of congrega tions. , ve sen d forth th e boo k with th e pra yer that it will stimulate greater zeal for mission wor k and will help th ose on th e frontier to kn ow that th ey are esteemed highl y for their work's sake. Ma y th ey not "beco me weary in well doing ", but know th at "H e th at goet h fort h and weepet h, bear in g seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with joy, bringing his sheaves with him. " In Go d's eterna l firm ament th ey shall "shine as th e stars forev er an d ever." ( ( Dedication It seems fitting and proper that this book listing m1ss10uaries who have gone out from churches of Christ in the U.S.A. to various foreign countries should be dedicated to the honored memory of him who was one of the first pioneers in that type of work , and who served faithfully in Japan for half a century. That man was our " beloved brother and faithful minist er", John Moody McCaleb. And he went to his task well-equipped spiritually, for he was a man like Stephen, "full of faith and the Holy Spirit"; hence he was also filled with love for God and man and a burning zeal for winning lost souls . Having attended the old Transylvania School of the Bible a t Lexington, Ky., and there sat at the feet of such stalwart and devout Bible scholars as Brother .J. ,,v. McGarvey , Brother I. B. Grubbs and others of like caliber, he had learned the meaning and value of the pure gospel of the grace of God, and was eager to share the unse arch able riches of Christ with those who sat in spiritual darkness. As a true pioneer, Brother McCaleb prepared the way for the second and third generat ions of missionaries who have since followed after him . All of these should acknowledge their debt of gratitude, not only for his exemp lary pattern of unselfish dedication to world-evangelism, but also for the practical wisdom he passed on to us. When Broth er McCaleb first went to Japan with his young bride back in 1892, there was no one ther e to welcome him , no language schoo l in existence to aid him in mastering the foreign tongue , no mod ern conveniences of any kind, and scant financial support. Indeed, like the apostle Paul , he too found it necessary not infrequently to ( "make tents" in order to "make ends meet" for his growing family . This writer remembers his telling once that there had bee n several times in his tenure of service in Japan when his monthly checks from America did not amount to more than $15. But he was never one to comp lain about such hardships . Instead , he learned in wh atsoever state he was, therein to be content, and that cheerfully, a lesson that all mission aries need to learn! As I had occasion to state at his funeral service some ten years ago, while Brother McCa leb's work was the more difficult and less spectacular service of pioneering, namely, that of seed-sowing , foundation-laying , and way-showing, for the benefit of those who should follow after him , only the light of Eternity will fully reveal the actual fruitage of his arduous labors .

Abstract: Orville W. “Sonny” Martin Jr., an Oshkosh, Wisconsin native, describes his experiences growing up in a military family; serving in the 3 rd Platoon, A Company, 59 th Armored Infantry Battalion, 13 th Armored Division during World War II; training the 4th Field Artillery Battalion and the 35 th Quartermaster Pack Company during the Korean War; serving in Taiwan in 1959; and working at the Pentagon during the Vietnam War. Martin describes the service of his father, a Neenah (Wisconsin) native, during World War I and his parents’ wedding at Camp Stotsenburg (Clark Air Force Base) in the Philippines. Martin touches upon his military ancestry including a great-great-uncle, “General” Warren Healy, who was a drummer boy during the Civil War and became Paymaster General of New York during the Spanish-American War. Martin grew up an “Army brat” on various bases, including: West Point (New York), Fort Ethan Allen (Vermont), Fort Sill (Oklahoma), Schofield Barracks (Hawaii), Fort Hoyle (Maryland), Baton Rouge (Louisiana), and Fort Leavenworth (Kansas). He discusses at length his schooling and social interactions among children of officers and enlisted men. Martin details family life on the base which he calls a “very moral society.” Martin tells stories of corporal punishment and officers disciplining others’ children, a practice that faded in the 1960s.

  • The Late Registrations and Corrections to Greene County Birth Records
Index for Late Registrations and Corrections to Birth Records held at the Greene County Records Center and Archives The late registrations and corrections to Greene County birth records currently held at the Greene County Records Center and Archives were recorded between 1940 and 1991, and include births as early as 1862 and as late as 1989. These records represent the effort of county government to correct the problem of births that had either not been recorded or were not recorded correctly. Often times the applicant needed proof of birth to obtain employment, join the military, or draw on social security benefits. An index of the currently available microfilmed records was prepared in 1989, and some years later, a supplemental index of additional records held by Greene County was prepared. In 2011, several boxes of Probate Court documents containing original applications and backup evidence in support of the late registrations and corrections to the birth records were sorted and processed for archival storage. This new index includes and integrates all the bound and unbound volumes of late registrations and corrections of birth records, and the boxes of additional documents held in the Greene County Archives. The index allows researchers to view a list arranged in alphabetical order by the applicant’s last name. It shows where the official record is (volume and page number) and if there is backup evidence on file (box and file number). A separate listing is arranged alphabetically by mother’s maiden name so that researchers can locate relatives of female relations. Following are listed some of the reasons why researchers should look at the Late Registrations and Corrections to Birth Records: 1.

Brussels PRINTED FOR MELINE, CANS A.ND C"., EOILEVARD DE WATERLOO, Zi. M DCCC XXXIX. MR V. un:ve PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION. To assist in the detection of spurious and the correction of inaccu- rate pedigrees, is one of the purposes of the present publication, in which respect the first Volume has been of acknowledged utility. The two together, it is hoped, will form a comprehensive and tole- rably correct Register of Pedigrees. It will be observed that some of the Mares which appeared in the last Supplement (whereof this is a republication and continua- tion) stand as they did there, i. e. without any additions to their produce since 1813 or 1814. — It has been ascertained that several of them were about that time sold by public auction, and as all attempts to trace them have failed, the probability is that they have either been converted to some other use, or been sent abroad. If any proof were wanting of the superiority of the English breed of horses over that of every other country, it might be found in the avidity with which they are sought by Foreigners. The exportation of them to Russia, France, Germany, etc. for the last five years has been so considerable, as to render it an object of some importance in a commercial point of view.
