Three-time AVCA Coach of the Year Alan Knipe has created a winning culture at Long Beach State and in 2018 led the men’s volleyball program to its second NCAA National Title. In 16 seasons at the helm of the Long Beach State men’s volleyball program, Knipe has guided KNIPE AT THE the Beach to five NCAA Final Fours – three since 2016, a pair of conference tournament championships, 13 MPSF tournament appearances, and two NCAA Championship showings.

During the 2018 campaign, Knipe led the Beach to a 28-1 record marking the most victories in a single season since 2004. Long Beach State strung together a program-record 24-match winning streak, which also marked the best start to the season in LBSU men’s volleyball history. The Beach registered their NCAA second-straight undefeated season at home, posting a 12-0 record inside the Walter Pyramid. 8 CHAMPIONSHIP APPEARANCES The Beach moved into the No. 1 spot in the National Rankings on January 15th and remained there for the rest of the season. Long Beach State concluded the season leading the nation in winning percentage (.966) and with an attack percentage of .375. 2018 - NCAA Champions (Head Coach)

Long Beach State breezed through non-conference season and went 9-1 in the Big West action as Knipe picked up his 300th 2017 - NCAA Semifinalists (Head Coach) career victory with a 3-0 sweep at UC San Diego on April 6, during the league’s inaugural season sponsoring men’s volleyball. 2016 - NCAA Semifinalists (Head Coach) The Beach went on to win the regular season title as well as the Big West Conference Tournament. Knipe was named Big West Coach of the Year, junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco was selected as Big West Player of the Year, and the Beach boasted a total 2008 - NCAA Semifinalists (Head Coach) of six all-conference selections. 2004 - NCAA Finalists (Head Coach) Heading into the NCAA Tournament, Knipe picked up his second-straight and third overall USMC/AVCA Coach of the Year 1999 - NCAA Finalists (Assistant Coach) honor, while junior setter Josh Tuaniga claimed the AVCA National Player of the Year award, and five LBSU players garnered All-America accolades. 1991 - NCAA Champions (Player)

Knipe led the Beach to a four-set win over Ohio State in the NCAA Semifinals as Long Beach State punched its ticket to the 1990 - NCAA Finalists (Player) NCAA Championship match for the seventh time in program history and the first time since 2004. The top-ranked Beach rallied to defeat UCLA on its home court at Pauley Pavilion in five sets to earn their first National Title under Knipe and second in program history. Tuaniga was named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, while he, DeFalco, and junior opposite Kyle Ensing were named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.

Under Knipe’s tutelage, Long Beach State has posted a 306-147 record as Knipe boasts a .675 winning percentage. In conference action, the Beach is 199-114 (.636) with Knipe on the bench. He has served as head coach of the Beach since 2001, with a brief hiatus from 2010-12 in which he coached the U.S. Men’s National Team.

As head coach of the Beach, Knipe has coached five National Players of the Year in Josh Tuaniga (AVCA, 2018, TJ DeFalco, NATIONAL (AVCA, 2017) Taylor Crabb (AVCA, 2013), Paul Lotman (AVCA, 2008) and Tyler Hildebrand (Volleyball Magazine, 2006). 5 PLAYERS During his tenure as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team, Knipe guided the Americans to the quarterfinals of the 2012 OF THE YEAR Olympic Games in London as they advanced to the knockout round after finishing first in Pool B, which also featured Brazil and Russia, who were ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the world, respectively. 2018 AVCA National Player of the Year Josh Tuaniga With Knipe at the helm, the United States also qualified for the World League Finals on three occasions (2009, 2011 and 2012). In 2012, they claimed the FIVB World League silver medal, marking their second-best finish since the World League began in 1990. Additionally, the U.S. won the gold medal at the 2012 NORCECA Continental Olympic Qualification Tournament, securing 2017 AVCA National Player of the Year their eighth consecutive berth to the Olympics. TJ DeFalco Knipe played three years (1990-92) at Long Beach State under Ray Ratelle, where he was a key member of the 1991 National Championship team. In the1991 title match, Knipe racked up 16 kills, nine digs, eight blocks and hit .636 (16-2-22) as LBSU topped USC, 3-1. 2013 AVCA National Player of the Year Taylor Crabb As a student-athlete at LBSU, Knipe received numerous honors including all-conference (First Team, 1992), All-American (Frist Team, 1992; Second Team, 1991) and All-NCAA Tournament (1991) accolades. He also helped the Beach advance to the 1990 NCAA Finals. 2008 AVCA National Player of the Year

Knipe continued his playing career following his graduation from Long Beach State as he was a member of the United States Paul Lotman National Team from 1992-93. He also played on the Bud Light 4-Man Pro Beach Volleyball Tour and won seven USVB National Open Championships with Team Paul Mitchell. In 1993, he was named the United States Volleyball Association Player of the Year. Two years later, Knipe played overseas for Spoleto in the Italian Pro League and played for the Zellik Club in Belgium the 2006 Volleyball Mag National Player of the Year following year. In October 2006, Knipe was inducted into the inaugural Long Beach State Men’s Volleyball Wall of Honor which recognizes former players who represented Long Beach State men’s volleyball with unparalleled success or achievement. He was also inducted into the Long Beach State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.

Knipe graduated from Marina High School in Huntington Beach, Calif., and spent one year at Orange Coast College before transferring to Long Beach State, where he received his bachelor’s degree in speech communications in 1992.

Knipe and his wife, Jennifer, have two sons, Aidan and Evan.
