THE DUAL WORKING OF THE THE BAPTISM OF THE SPIRIT – PART 2

I. RECEIVING THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

A. The gives many names for the Holy Spirit that reveal His divine nature and specific function. He is the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the Lord, the Spirit of Glory, the Spirit of Wisdom, the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord, the Spirit of Grace and Supplication, the Holy Spirit and Fire, the Spirit of Life, the Helper, the Spirit of Truth, the Anointing, the Promise of the Father, the Spirit of Adoption, etc..

B. One of my favorite names of the Holy Spirit in Scripture is that He is the “Gift” of the Father. Every gift that God gives us (including the Holy Spirit) is good and perfect [James 1:17]. The Holy Spirit is a gift from above that we are not to fear or be suspicious of.

Acts 2:38,39 “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 "For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."

C. God has promised to give us and our children a glorious gift from above called the Holy Spirit. From the moment we are saved until the Day that we go to be with the Lord The Holy Spirit is continually helping us live a victorious Christian life [2 Cor. 3:17; Jn. 10:10].

II. THE SPIRIT WITHIN

A. The Holy Spirit has a two‐fold work in the life of every Christian. This “Dual Working of the Spirit” of God is an inward work (for ourselves) and an outward work (for others). One is for Holiness and Sanctification, and the other is for Power and Ministry.

B. At the moment of our salvation the Holy Spirit comes WITHIN US to equip us to live like Jesus. When we turn from our sin and put faith in Jesus, God supernaturally makes us new and comes to live in us by His Holy Spirit. God puts His Spirit within us to enable us to walk in His commandments [Ezek. 36:27].

Ezekiel 36:26,27 "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my commandments…

Ephesians 1:13 “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise.

C. Jesus taught His disciples that the Holy Spirit would not only to be with them, but IN them. This was a new announcement that stunned the disciples. Never before had God the Holy Spirit been made inwardly available to all of humanity until Jesus rose from the grave.

John 14:16,17 “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever‐‐ 17 "the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

John 16:7 “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 1 | P a g e

D. Jesus promised that everyone who truly believes in Him will experience rivers of living water flowing inside of them from the Holy Spirit. These rivers ‘flow out of our heart’ or innermost being and spring up into everlasting life (eternal salvation).

John 7:38,39 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

John 4:14 “Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."

E. The Apostle Paul affirmed this very truth. He taught that when someone becomes a child of God, God makes them a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit [1 Cor. 3:16, 6:19]. The Holy Spirit helps us live in intimacy w/ Jesus and one another; while being victorious over sin, Satan and all the works of darkness.

1 Corinthians 6:17 “He who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.

Romans 8:16 “The Holy Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God”

III. THE SPIRIT UPON

A. The work of the Holy Spirit however does not stop at being born again. The Spirit of God also comes UPON believers to empower us to minister to others like Jesus. This is called ‘the Baptism of the Spirit’ or ‘Gift of the Holy Spirit’ and is subsequent to salvation to give us power for service [Acts 1:5, 11:16].

B. The Holy Spirit is within you for your sake, but He comes upon you for the sake of the world. Jesus was very clear that the ‘coming upon’ of the Holy Spirit is for power to be a witness.

Luke 24:49 “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father [the Holy Spirit] upon you; but tarry in the city of until you are endued with power from on high.”

Acts 1:8 “You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses to me...

C. Every time the New Testament refers to the Spirit resting ‘upon’ a believer it is referencing being anointed for Ministry [Matt. 12:18].

Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

D. After Jesus was resurrected He breathed on His disciples and said ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’ [Jn. 20:22]. At that moment the disciples did not receive power for service, but the inward witness of the Spirit that brought full salvation through the forgiveness of sins [vv.23].

John 20:22,23 “And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 "If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."

E. The full work of salvation could not be fully realized or experienced until Jesus was raised from the dead. Paul taught that to be truly saved you must “confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart” that He is raised from the dead. In John 20:22, immediately after Jesus rose from the dead He breathed on His disciples and now gave them the inward witness of the Spirit of God.

Romans 10:9,10 “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

F. In Acts 8 the City of Samaria received the message of the Kingdom, believed, and were baptized. According to Jesus they were truly saved [Mark 16:16]. The Apostles however did not consider them to have received all of the Holy Spirit until He came UPON them through the laying on of hands [vv.16].

Acts 8:5‐17 “Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them. 6 And the multitudes with one accord heeded the things spoken by Philip, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed. 8 And there was great joy in that city… 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized… 14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

G. In Acts 19:1‐12 Paul found believers in Ephesus and asked them an important question‐ “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” [vv.2]. Paul revealed that it is possible to believe and put saving faith in Jesus, and yet not receive the full measure of the Holy Spirit for service.

Acts 19:1,2 “Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples 2 he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."

IV. GIFTS VS. FRUIT

A. The Dual Working of the Spirit is seen when comparing the 9 Gifts of the Holy Spirit [1 Cor. 12:8‐10] with the 9 Fruit of the Holy Spirit [Gal. 5:22,23]. The Fruit of the Spirit are being produced within you for your own sake. The Gifts of the Spirit are given to you not for your sake, but for the worlds.

Galatians 5:16‐23 “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh wars against the [inward work of the] Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh… 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is , joy, , longsuffering, , goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self‐ control… 3 | P a g e

THE DUAL WORKING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THE BAPTISM OF THE SPIRIT – PART 2

1 Corinthians 12:4‐10 “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit… 7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one [believer] for the profit of all [others]: 8 for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, 9 to another faith… gifts of healings… the working of miracles… prophecy… discerning of spirits… different kinds of tongues… the interpretation of tongues.

B. Fruit are produced (thus called ‘produce’) and Gifts are given. Fruit takes time to develop, but gifts are freely received. is not a gift, it’s a fruit. It grows and matures as we submit to the inward work of the Spirit. Likewise prophecy is not a fruit, it’s a gift. We do not work up prophecy and try to produce it, we receive it as a free gift and give it away.

C. Jesus taught us that we will know Believers by their fruit, not by their gifts. We are to discern and value someone not by how much they are being used in ministry; but by their love, patience, self‐ control, etc. [Eph. 5:9]. It is fully possible to have a flourishing ministry (outwardly) and yet be filled (inwardly) with anger or lust. Our measuring stick, according to Jesus, is fruit not gifts.

Matthew

7:16‐20 “You will know them by their fruits... 17 Every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 20 "Therefore by their fruits you will know them.

D. A sign of spiritual immaturity is when we take pride in our Gifts (healing, prophecy, singing, preaching, etc.) and yet ignore the inward work of the Spirit to produce greater holiness and love within us. Jude taught that a misleading teacher will be a cloud without water (big show in ministry) and a tree without fruit.

Jude 1:12 “…They are clouds without water, carried about by the winds; late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, pulled up by the roots;

E. God requires that we cultivate both workings of the Holy Spirit in our every day life. An overemphasis on the Gifts will set us up for spiritual arrogance and pride, and an emphasis on Fruit will keep us self‐ focused and sin‐centered. However both fully flowing together will make us dynamic Christians who change the world.
