A Message From President Hughes The men's basketball program is integral to the University's athletic endeavors, just as the athletic program is integral to our view of education - which is that education should develop the whole person. This program moved from NCAA Division II to Division I in 1979, and each year has seen increasing strength and competitive cap abilities in the USO team. The University is proud of the team's accomplishments, and pleased to support the program in every way possible, including scholarship aid to our athletes, recognition of the values of the program, and promotion of intercollegiate athletics. I believe our USO team will be receiving some national attention this year, and / look forward to watching the season's events unfold. Author E. Hughes President

Jack Boyce John McNamara Vice President - Financial Affairs Vice President - University Relations DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS TOMIANNACONE Director of Athletics Tom Iannacone is in his fourth year as the University of San Diego Director of Athletics. He assumed the position September 1, 1988 after a nationwide search . The 50-year-old Iannacone has made great strides in his first three years. His accomplishments at USO include an on going internal· reorganization of the athletic department, plus improvements in the major areas of new personnel, additional scholarship assistance, facilities improvements, promotions and marketing, fund raising , drug education , academic sup port, and new university approved plan for scholarship support and sports sponsorship. Iannacone came to the University of San Diego with an im pressive list of credentials and a thorough knowledge of in tercollegiate athletics. Prior to USO he was Director of Athletics for four years at St. Francis College in Loretto, Pennsylvania. Hard work, loyalty and dedication are just some of the words that easily describe Iannacone. His major contributions at St. Francis included the expansion of sports offerings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athletic facilities, the hiring of additional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athletics. He served on several committees, most notably the ECAC Infractions committee and the Northeast Conference committee on conference development, which developed a plan for the future and implemented the position for a full-time commissioner. Currently Iannacone serves as a consultant to the NCAA I-AAA Football Committee. Prior to his tenure at St. Francis, Iannacone served as assistant athletic director at Fordham University from 1977-84. Along with his administrative duties at Fordham, he was an assistant football coach for the Rams. From 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victories in their final 24 games during this span. The 1977 squad was and remains the highest scoring team in Fordham history, averaging 34 points per game. In 1983, Iannacone was presented the prestigious Jack Coffey Award by the Alumni Association for outstanding contributions to Fordham athletics. He also served on various Metro Atlantic Conference committees. Prior to Fordham , Iannacone taught physical education and coached track and football in the Norwalk, Ridgefield and New Milford (CT) school districts from 1964-76. He made his col legiate football coaching debut as an offensive backfield coach at Western Connecticut State University in 1974. A 1964 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Iannacone received his master of science degree in physical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1973. Tom and his wife, Cynthia, have three children: Tom Jr. , Jennifer and Eric; all three are students at USO. QUTLOOK

1991-1992 TORERO BASKETBALL "REACHING NEW HEIGHTS" For the second straight year and fifth season in seven campaigns under head coach Hank Egan , the USO men's basketball program posted a winning record in 1990-91 . Although USO finished with 17 victories against 12 defeats, as well as a solid third place finish in the competitive West Coast Conference, coach Egan will have his work cut out for him in 1991-92 if he is to continue " Reaching New Heights." The Toreros had six seniors, including the leading scorer, complete their eligibility last year, the largest exodus of personnel from any wee team . Gone are WCC Honorable Mention selections Anthony Thomas (14.7 ppg) and Pat Holbert (11.4 ppg), as well as center Dondi Bell (8.4 ppg), Keith Colvin, Randy Thompson and Shawn Hamilton . Although USO will miss the above players, they still have a nice nucleus of players returning. Coach Egan returns three starters and seven letter winners from last year's squad, in addition to three letterwinners from the 1989-90 season that sat out last year. Topping the list of key returners is starting forward Kelvin Woods (6 '6"), an AII-WCC First Team selection and the team's MVP. Kelvin is the team's top returning scorer (13.6 ppg) and rebounder (5.5 rpg) . He led the Toreros in scoring on nine occasions and is currently 18th among USD's all-time scoring leaders with 831 points. Senior guards Wayman Strickland and Michael Brown are the other two return ing starters. Strickland, a fourth-year senior from San Francisco, California, set a WCC record by canning 57.7 percent of his three-pointers in WCC games last year. Strickland , who averaged 10.6 ppg overall and 14.4 ppg in WCC action, is also on schedule to break USD's school record for assists. With his 93rd this season Wayman will have dished off 452 career assists, breaking USD's mark of 451 (Stan , 1971-74). Michael Brown got the starting nod in game #14 last season and didn't lose that honor the rest of the way. In his 16 starts, Michael averaged 12.2 ppg and earned the team's Athletic Excellence Award at the end of the season. A versatile athlete, Michael can play all three perimeter positions for the Toreros. Three-year letterman Carlos Carrillo (6 '6" guard/forward) and 6'8" Reed Watson (forward/center) fill out the quintet of seniors. With the loss of four players 6'7" or taller, Watson will be counted on to supply scoring, rebounding and defense as an inside player. The other two lettermen back from a year ago include junior guard Geoff Probst, a feisty floor leader, and sophomore guard Neal Meyer (6 '3"). The Toreros have three players with varsity experience that sat out the 1990-91 season. Back to give San Diego some added depth are 6'5" junior Gylan Dottin , the 1989 WCC Freshman of the Year ; 6'9" sophomore center Brooks Barnhard, who missed last season after back surgery; and 6'4" guard/forward Joe Temple, an extremely talented athlete that should help the Toreros at both ends of the floor. Dottin , the team's second leading scorer two seasons ago, is another player capable of filling numerous positions for Egan . Two newcomers that round out the 1991-92 squad include sophomore Chris Grant, a 6'7" forward from Canada College and 6'0" sophomore guard Doug Harris, a transfer from Fresno State University. Harris will have to sit out the 1991-92 season. Grant adds size and depth to the Torero bench. USO should continue to be one of the top shooting teams in the West Coast Conference. The Toreros led the league in overall shooting last season, hitting an even 50 percent. The Toreros were also the most accurate team from the perimeter, leading the conference by making 40.3 percent of their three- shots (160-for-397) . Strickland was the team's best shooter beyond the three-point line, connecting on 47-of-101 treys. The Toreros will play two exhibitions in November prior to their regular season opener against San Diego State on November 22. Other teams highlighting their tough noriconference slate include UC Santa Barbara, San Jose State, U.S. Naval Academy, Arizona State and Colorado. The Toreros open up WCC league play on January 11 when they host Broncos. ROSTER

SAN DIEGO HEAD COACH HANK EGAN

Head Coach Hank Egan begins his eighth season with the USO Toreros and twenty-first as a Division I head coach. Last season's 17-12 campaign marked the fifth time in seven years that Egan posted a winning record at the helm of the USO basketball program. For the second year in a row San Diego fin ished third in the competitive West Coast Conference standings. Coach Egan has tallied an impressive seven-year record at San Diego of 111-87, as well as a 70-28 mark in the USO Sports Center. His .561 winning percentage at USO is tops among the nine different coaches that have been at the helm of the USO basketball program. Entering his twenty-first year, Coach Egan takes a career mark of 259-272 into the 1991-92 campaign. Last year's 17 victories was Coach Egan's third highest single season win total behind his teams from 1985-86 (19 wins) and 1986-87 (24 wins). The 1986-87 team finished 24-6 and won the WCC regular-season crown. At the NCAA's that year, the Toreros suffered a tough 62-61 loss to Auburn University in the tournament's first round; however, that year's team completed its most successful season ever. Along the way, USO won fourteen consecutive games, won the regular-season West Coast Conference championship with a 13-1 record and finished with a school record 24 victories. Coach Egan's peers from the WCC voted him the 1986-87 Coach of the Year. In 1985-86, he guided the Toreros to a fine record of 19-9 and was named Co-Coach of the Year in the WCC, sharing the honor with UCLA's (formerly head coach at Pepperdine). A recognized expert in the technical aspects of the game, Hank has an impeccable reputation for integrity, and is a coach who "gets the most" out of his players. Acknowledged as one of the finest defensive coaches in the nation, good defense is a trademark with Egan-coached teams. His 1986-87 team finished #1 in the nation in defense (.401) and in the top-ten in scoring defense (60.3) . His 1985-86 team finished 8th in the nation in FGO/o defense, limiting opponents to 42.4% shooting. Prior to USO, Hank coached at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for eighteen years, thirteen as the head coach . Highlights of his coaching career include his 1986-87 club that finished 24-6 and participated in the NCAA Tournament, his 1985-86 team that finished 19-9, and his 16-9 Air Force club from 1976. As evidence of the high regard in which he is held by his colleagues and basketball people in general , Hank was the alternate coach to (USC) for the 1984 United States Olympic Basketball Team; he was a coach in the Olympic tryouts in Bloomington, Indiana, and also scouted South American Olympic teams in San Paulo, Brazil ; he is a member of the Legislative Commission of the National Basketball Coaches Association of America; and , was one of the only ten coaches chosen in 1984 by the NCAA to participate and represent the country's coaches in a special meeting of Presidents, Athletic Directors, and Faculty Representatives called to study the strengthening of academic requirements for intercollegiate athletics. Before becoming the second head coach in Air Force basketball history, Egan was the freshman mentor for two seasons and was chief scout and recruiter during the 1970-71 season. From 1966 to 1968, he was an assistant junior varsity coach. A three-time basketball letterman at Navy, he also played several seasons on Air Force service teams and has coached on both the military and AAU levels. Hank graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. His hobbies include golf, racquetball , reading and crossword puzzles. Hank and his wife Judy have two children, John and Kelly.

''AMERICA'S FINEST CITY''

San Diego is truly "America's Finest City." A modern metropolis (second largest in California) and a popular year round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, canyons and valleys. San Diego also surrounds one of California's greatest natural harbors which has been a dominant factor in determining the city's history, economy and development. As home of the largest naval air station on the west coast, the federal government ranks first in economic impor tance to the city with the aerospace equipment industry second. Tourism closely follows as third . Business and pleasure coexist in harmony in San Diego. The climate, attractive setting and recreational facilities make San Diego "America's Finest City." According to Sports Illustrated, " For sheer numbers of participants, diversity of pursuits of involvement, San Diego must rank as the sports and fitness capital of the U.S." Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sail, swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, wind-surf on 70 miles of public beach or golf at any of the over 70 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1,158-ace recreation and cultural center, offers 25 tennis courts, two gym nasiums, two municipal golf courses and one of the nation's finest zoos. Mission Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing, bicycling, tennis , golf and kite flying. As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports their professional teams-the Chargers in football, the Padres in baseball and the Sockers in soccer. Whatever sporting activity there is, it's here in San Diego-the sports capital of the U.S.A.

Kneeling Standing WEST COAST CONFERENCE

wee CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY The West Coast Conference turns 40 in 1991-92 with hopes that the number of its returning athletes among the eight WCC basketball teams will make th is anniversary season one to remember for a long, long time. Thirty-three of the 40 players who started the majority of the games last year are back for another go-around in 1992. The eight-team conference, with members spanning the West Coast from Canada to Mexico, is made up of Gonzaga University, Loyola Marymount University, Pepperdine University, the University of Portland , Saint Mary's College, the University of San Diego, the University of San Francisco and Santa Clara University. All eight are private institutions with exceptional academic reputations and have made up the WCC for the past dozen years. Like any 40-year-old, the league has undergone a few changes with a total of 15 different schools owning membership at some point. (Former members include charter members San Jose State and Pacific, along with UNLV, Fresno State, UC Santa Barbara, Nevada-Reno and Seattle.) Formed as the California Basketball Association in 1952, the league changed its name to the West Coast Athletic Conference in 1956 and shortened that to the current name in 1990. The WCC sponsors ten championships for men and women in: baseball , men's and women's basketball , men's and women's cross country, men's golf, men's soccer, men's and women's tennis and women's volleyball. San Francisco has won 16 men's hoops titles followed by Pepperdine (8) , Santa Clara (6) , Loyola Marymount (4) , Saint Mary's (3) and San Diego (2) . TRADITION The WCC has deep roots in the glory days of basketball and the league has owned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament since its first year. Eight different members have won the title at least once with San Francisco leading the way with 15 league banners and a pair of back-to-back national championships in 1955 and 1956. Legendary names from the WCC 's past include , K.C. Jones, , , Darwin Cook, , , and . Former NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle once served as sports information director at USF. San Francisco 36 years 15 titles Loyola Marymount 36 years 3 titles Pepperdine 36 years 8 titles San Diego 11 years 1 title Santa Clara 39 years 7 titles Portland 15 years O titles St. Mary's 39 years 3 titles Gonzaga 11 years O titles PITCHES, DIAMONDS, COURTS AND COURSES While basketball gets most of the attention , it 's not the only WCC sport. In fact , the conference is gaining recognition as one of the top soccer leagues in the country. Santa Clara tied for the national championship in 1989 and has been ranked among the nation's best the past two years. Portland has been in three straight NCAA tournaments while San Diego made it to the Sweet Sixteen in 1990. USF has won the soccer national championship four times. Baseball is also another sport with a successful past. Pepperdine has won seven of the past eight titles. Countless players have gone on to professional baseball careers after playing collegiately in the WCC. The University of San Diego men's tennis team captured the WCC crowns in 1989 and 1990, with Pepperdine winning in 1991 . This is the seventh season of WCC women's sports, and the fifth with conference membership mirroring the men's league. Gonzaga, Portland and St. Mary's upgraded their programs to the Division I level just four years ago. Gonzaga won the women's title in their first Division I season , St. Mary's won it in 1989 and 1990, and Santa Clara took the title in 1991 . Portland has captured the cross-country crown in each of the last four years. Pepperdine is a perennial champion in volleyball and tennis, though the competition and quality of play in all four sports-basketball, cross country, tennis and volleyball-is improving annually. NATIONAL CHAMPIONS Current WCC members have won 13 NCAA team championships, most recently the shared 1989 soccer crown by Santa Clara. USF has seven titles (four in soccer, two in basketball, one in tennis) followed by Pepperdine with three (all in volleyball) and Santa Clara (soccer) and Gonzaga () with one apiece. Pepperdine has three individual tennis champions and Gonzaga has a trio of boxing winners. San Francisco has won individual championships in tennis and fencing while Loyola Marymount won an individual track title. San Diego picked up a pair of Division II team tennis crowns and Pepperdine won two track awards prior to joining the WCC. Portland captured its first national title in 1986, in NAIA cross country. St. Mary's also won the NAIA soccer championship that year.
